My Favorite Movies

My favourite movies, of course. I have a weird tatse (like my friends always say) so don't be surprised if you find something strange (or some 2 films that you never thought can be loved by the same person) here ^^

BTW, in my own dictionary, "favourite" means I can watch over and over again. I like a lot of films and in my ratings, you can see some which I gave higher rating but don't appear in my favourite list ^^

PS: This list is in no particular order :P

  nezuko11738's Rating My Rating
1
Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)
Forrest Gump
It's my all time favourite movie. I watched it when I was only a small child, just about 5 or 6, and honestly, I can't remember much of it, but the impression it made on me is permanent.

A man who sat on the bench, his insecure eyes watching everything happening in front of his life, like he'd never been a part of it... And how similar he was to me...

Tom Hanks gave an excellent work here, which made me his fan ever since. He didn't act as Gump: he is Gump, from appearance to eyes, even from the way he looks at people... and how he captured my heart by this movie :)

Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo (Brotherhood) (Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War) 2004,  R)
Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo (Brotherhood) (Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War)
Fierce yet gentle, bloody yet emotional and can move anyone to tears, that's all I can say in short for this movies.

It's about two brother in war, when they didn't know what they were fighting for, what was the meaning of all those dead, and how they changed, from two innocent young men, lovely brothers to those something they'd never thought they could be...

I've always thought of Jang Dong-gun and Won Bin as some pretty-face but their acting in this movie made me change my mind. I would never forget those loving scenes of Jin-tae and Jin-seok's brotherhood, how their smile shined when Jin-tae bought his brother an ice cream, how he sacrificed his life for his brother's safety... Would never forget the scene when they faced each other as enemies, two dark faces covered in blood and mud drawing close to each other, two bloody red pairs of eyes staring into each other, with gunfire and bomb exploding in background... And what stood above all the dead, all the killing, all the hatred, when Jin-tae cried out "Jin-seok...", is their brotherly love for each other, the forever love nothing can get a finger on...

If you're just a war movies fan in particular or a movies fan in general in general, "Taegukgi" is a film I would strongly recommend, except for the somewhat over-portrayed violence.

Saving Private Ryan 1998,  R)
4
The Terminal 2004,  PG-13)
The Terminal
Because life is waiting...
Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Steven Spielberg, one amazing film. A simple plot, a simple scenery, simple people, yet so many things said.

"The Terminal" is not only about things in an airport. It's life. It's somebody who has been waiting to return to his home far far away... Somebody who has been waiting for a "yes" from his love... Somebody who has been waiting to have a true love.... Somebody who has been waiting to fulfill his father's dream... Because life is waiting...

I strongly recommend this film to everyone, `cause through this, maybe you'll find what is missing in your life. And never forget the casting and the director, it's worth every minute watching.

Catch Me If You Can 2002,  PG-13)
Catch Me If You Can
Absolutely clever and quirky, this is an amusing cat-mouse played by Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio with somewhat moving touch to it and, of course, an entertaining ending
8
The Sixth Sense 1999,  PG-13)
The Sixth Sense
This movie surprised me, from the casting to the ending. I'd never thought Mel Gibson could play in any movie beside actions, but he gave a good job as a doctor here. And Haley, such talents that I've hardly ever seen in any kid actor (actually I like all his roles, especially in A.I). And the end could take anyone by surprise. Bittersweet, I must say...
9
The Pianist 2002,  R)
The Pianist
This film is a song rising from the battlefield.
10
Brokeback Mountain 2005,  R)
Brokeback Mountain
It's the best movie about homosexual love I've seen and one of the most beautiful movies ever made. I've never liked Western works of art on homosexuality because in my opinion (before I saw Brokeback Mountain), they always lack of depth. But Brokeback Mountain changed my mind, or better put, changed me.

Jack and Ennis, their love filled me with... love. Such strong feelings, such strong emotions yet never an "I love you" to each other... The silent love took place for twenty years in a narrow-minded society which never has a place for people like them to live true to themselves...

One thing can be ignored that the scenery chosen is very, very beautiful. The mountain, the lake, the sky, so enormous and yet, so lonely, so sad... It was captured so well on screen that sometimes, just look at the nature makes me have an urge to cry...

Moreover, the acting was so good. I can never imagine other actors playing Ennis and Jack.
Heath Ledger gave his most wonderful performance here. I'm not a fan of his acting, but Heath didn't act as Ennis. He lived as Ennis, how Ennis, from a straight-as-a-rod man, accepted his true feelings about Jack, and in that process, also accepted his true self, though it was too late. If there's something Ennis taught me, it's about living without regrets, living for what you want, who you love and who you truly are.
And Jake Gyllenhaal, he is seriously a talented actor. I love how he can act with his eyes. Just look at them, the ice shade of blue yet so warm whenever he looked at Ennis, the icy lifeless blue when when Ennis drove away from him, so many feelings wanting to be released but never was...

I know it's dubbed as the "gay cowboy movie", but in my opinion, it's not only a movie about homosexual love. It's a movie about love. And the greatest one so far

October Sky 1999,  PG)
October Sky
Damn, this film wets my eyes everytime I see it >"<

This film has nothing new, but somehow it will find way to touch you to the core. The same old efforts to fulfill your dreams, the same old impact between generations and the same old happy ending, but somehow I find myself related to everyone of them, a little bit here, a little bit there...

Moreover, this film is strengthened by the solid performance from the cast, especially Chris Cooper and Jake Gyllenhaal. As father and son, they have such a great chemistry that makes me cry over and over again in the ending. Playing his first big role, Jake really proved his talents as a promising young actor.

Overall, if you like an "American dream" film which can inspire and reach out to you, I strongly recommend this film.
12
Zodiac 2007,  R)
Zodiac
In my humble opinion, this is the most underrated film of 2007. I don't know about anyone else, but like the characters that got obsessed with Zodiac, I'm glued to this film from the beginning 'til the end.
13
Bubble Boy 2001,  PG-13)
Bubble Boy
It's one of the most hilarious films I've ever watched =))

I know lots of people don't like it, feel disappointed at it, but the matter is, don't take things too seriously. First, because it's meant to be funny, to make you laugh. And moreover, I don't think it's meaningless at all. The bubble is a wonderful metaphor. One way or another, we're all living in our own bubble, somehow afraid to get out, to pursue what we truly want, to stand up for what we truly are. And look at Jimmy, the one with the most visible bubble, he did them all.

And, for a Jake fan like me, this movie is really a treat. Jake proved that he could play a wide range of roles. He nailed Jimmy so perfectly, the young, sweet and innocent Jimmy that I adored so much.

Overall, I think this movie is quite good if you look at the right side. It is not an offense to the ones with this disease. It's about being true to yourself. I can't believe "Bubble Boy" is so misunderstood.
14
Beautiful Thing 1996,  R)
Beautiful Thing
After watching this movie, I totally understand why it landed at 2nd place in AfterElton.com's poll "50 greatest gay-themed movie" after the epic Brokeback Mountain. "Beautiful Thing" is... a beautiful thing, like the tagline, "An urban fairytale" that I could watch and smile from the start to the end with such a warm feeling. And I'm sure everyone can't help feeling happy and light-hearted from watching it.

This movie revolves around the coming-of-age/coming-out of Jamie and Ste, about the way they cope with the new feelings they have for each other. But what I love most is the way the characters treat each other. Jamie, Ste, Jamie's mom, Jamie's mom's boyfriend, Leah the girl nextdoor... The way Jamie accepts and love Ste for what he is, how he makes Ste feel beautiful, the way Jamie's mom offers Ste shelter from his abusive dad,... so many I want to say... And God, when I watched the ending, when Jamie and Ste, Jamie's mom and Leah danced together, despite the looks from people around, I felt like crying, that my heart would burst from that beauty... Maybe, it's too good to be true, but it's a fairytale, right?

Not the great animation film out there, I know, but I can't help falling in love with Horton's attitude.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence 2001,  PG-13)

Becoming Jane 2007,  PG)
Becoming Jane
Romance not being my cup of tea, I'm surprised that I actually enjoyed this film ^^

I must admit, but for the leading stars, Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy, I wouldn't watch it, and to my pleasure, they really gave a good job. At first I was taken aback by an American playing a very well-known Britsh authoress, but after watching I understood. Some of my friends said Jane should be played by Natalie Portman or Keira Knightly, but like James McAvoy said, Anne was perfest as Jane. I can't imagine another actress of her age in the role of Jane Austen, a lively, witted and independent woman but naturally beautiful and lovely all the same. And don't forget about her accent, not the creamy British one but a nice blend between British and her own. James McAvoy is wonderful here, despite not really looking so good together with Anne. I love the chemistry between them two, between Jane and Thomas, a little humourous, a little witted if not wicked and just loving, make me fall for their love and how they struggled for their own feelings and happiness...

I don't have much to say about the plot here, `cause it's not very original. However, what stroke me most is I actually felt for it, as like I said, I don't love romance. I can't say it's a sad ending `cause somehow it's the most satisfactory for both of them... Yet being a sucker for they-live-happily-ever-after as I am, I still feel pity for them...

Overall, I think this film is not a outstanding one, but a one that you could actually enjoy, with all the acting of the cast (like good old Julie Walters and Maggie Smith) and beautiful scenes of England countryside.

Deutschland. Ein Sommermärchen (Germany: A Summer's Fairytale)
I don't know what to say... I watched a documentary in Germany without a subtitle but it still possessed the power to blow me away! All my best memories from WC2006 became so vivid in front of my eyes that my heart ached... A must-see for any Mannschaft fan!

Plata quemada (Burnt Money) 2000,  R)
Plata quemada (Burnt Money)
This film is better than I expected. From some reviews I read, I thought it would be somehow shallow, but I'm glad that I was wrong. "Burnt Money" is a nice mix of action and love, which reminds me of "Bonnie and Clyde", only this time it's 2 men. On the second watch, this film burnt me with the intense passion that I missed out on the first time.

There's a scence by which I was blown away, that was when Angel and Nene first met, Angel put his alcohol bottle into Nene's pocket. A simple action that spoke louder than any word, so beautiful a display of trust and love that it hurt. I wish I could see more of their happy time, though they had their happy ending, one way or another...

School of Rock 2003,  PG-13)
School of Rock
To many people, it may be just for entertainment, but for a person who likes rock like me, this movie is amazing. The true sense of rock, the true feelings of rockers, the true fighting spirits, all in "School of Rock". And never forget the talented kids in this movie. Their acting is quite enjoyable, and what I love most is how they played their instruments for real, and how good it turned out, too. The soundtrack is also note-worthy in this movie with the catchy classic rock songs and rock 'n roll tunes.

Well, to conclude, what could I say than "For those about to rock, we salute you"?

Juno 2007,  PG-13)
Juno
Naturally brilliant, Juno is the coolest teen movie (if it could fall into that category) I've ever seen without trying to.

Happy Together (Chun gwong cha sit)
It's flawed in the most beautiful way.

Velvet Goldmine 1998,  R)
Velvet Goldmine
Glamourous. The characters, the music, the glam-rock scene, it's all glamourous. I'm not much into glam rock (read: I dislike it), but I really admire the work the film-makers did here, especially the wide references of glam-rockers and their works.

I think it's a sin, but I have to admit that I've never seen such a glamourous beauty like Brian Slade. I don't know why he intrigued me so much. Maybe because I saw in him an innocent quality that appealed to me. Always yearning for love, for eternal youth, for something he couldn't be, never knowing how to express himself, Brian in so many ways reminds me of Dorian Gray. And to think that Jonathan Rhys Meyers was only 20 when he portrayed that role... really admirable!

My Own Private Idaho 1991,  R)
My Own Private Idaho
River Phoenix is fascinating... It's the first film I watch of him but he totally amazes me. He doesn't own every scene he appears, he doesn't make you forget about other characters. He just plays Mike Waters the way Mike should be, subtle, always longing for love and above all, a home. Mike Waters could easily be my favouite film charater (and considering I rarely like any character from films, that counts for something). I ache for Mike throughout this film, from the moment he asks for $10 more, when he confesses to Scott and after all, when all he has is himself, Idaho and a never-ending road...

This film gives me a strange feeling. I don't like it much from the first watch, but it slowly grew on me... Besides, it features the most wonderful performance of River Phoenix, which enough to keeps me coming back over and over again... However, I still wish for a happy ending, at least for a beautiful creature like Mike Waters...

Seven (Se7en) 1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
Absolutely clever, very smart and stylish. Great performance of Morgan Freeman. I really want to praise Brad Pitt too... he was good throughout the film, but his acting in the end kind of spoilt it for me. Anyway, hats off to the screen-writer Andrew Kevin Walker and director David Fincher. Really a masterpiece of his.

I Am Sam 2001,  PG-13)
I Am Sam
One of the most heart-felt films I've ever seen, in which Sean Penn and Dakoto Fanning did give us stunning performances.
34
Milk 2008,  R)
Milk
Absolutely wonderful. All my deepest thanks and respects to all the filmmakers and the cast who did a terrific job giving us a nearly perfect biopic, to Sean Penn who brought Harvey Milk back to life, and especially to Harvey Milk, one of the most admirable and greatest fighters for people's rights to live as their true selves.

In my humble opinion, this film is a must-see not only to homosexuals, but also to heterosexuals who needs a genuine eye-opener to a world where there's so much hatred towards the way people simply being who they are while deep inside they are not just that different from us.

Anyway, I don't know if it's a pity or not that "Milk" receives so many political approaches, when it's humanity that comes first in this film. It really saddens me silly girl...
35
Big Fish 2004,  PG-13)
Big Fish
Truly fascinating, hilarious and touching at the same time. "Big Fish" differs a lot from other usual Tim Burton films, but still remains his wonderful fantasy style. Full of colours, it led me to think that everything you want to find in a movie, it's here, in "Big Fish". Very beautiful in all meanings of this world.

Gone Baby Gone 2007,  R)
Gone Baby Gone
This film is a triumph, absolutely fantastic, both morality and ethics challenging. It gives me so much to think about that I just don't know where to begin. Two thumbs-up to the Affleck brothers. For his directorial debut, Ben Affleck was way better than I expected.
38
Trainspotting 1996,  R)
Trainspotting
A very amusing description and insight into the life of young heroin addicts. It doesn't glorify or degrade or anything, all it does is tell a story. It's not only funny, witty besides some heart-felt and sad moments but also hopeful and very honest.
I must praise Ewan McGregor in this film. He gave a wonderful performance of an addict trying to find his way back into the light.

Antique
It seems haphazard in the first half, but when the plot picks up, you might find yourself enjoying more than you think you should. Bonus points for the fun and colorful editing.
44
Blue Valentine 2010,  R)
Blue Valentine
I struggled through this film, just like Dean and Cindy did through their marriage, but I think it's one struggle that I can deem worthy. It was so frustratingly realistic and brutally hurtful to my emotions but in the end, it made me think about love and marriage more than any romance films could do. Two thumbs up for Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. for being brilliant as always.
45
Lars and the Real Girl 2007,  PG-13)
Lars and the Real Girl
It wetted my eyes from the beginning to the end. "Lars and the Real Girl"... is like a modernized fairy-tale, I must say. All characters are weird in one way or another, but God, the way they love and care for Lars, for the baby of the community, it can actually make me believe in something so unrealistic, and moreover, make me believe in people.
