Probably one of the best Disney films of all time, this and Lion King. The quality of the script is as great as it's animation. Not wanting to give much away, the characters have 3-dimensional personalities and you really feel what they feel. Belle isn't just your typical "girl wanting a man". In fact, she hates the beast at first. But the relationship develops at a natural rate. They may connect in the first few months, but you have to realized that they are both stuck in a castle with each other. And then there's the villain, Gaston. Gaston is pretty much the town hot-shot and is used to getting everything he wants. He even organizes a wedding before he proposes (than again, it is the 17th century so...) He doesn't really interact with the beast until the end of course, finding out Belle likes the beast more than himself. He is a great villain for a love story like this. I'm not going to say much for now, but this will be updated.
Walt Disney's favorite and best movie is definetly this. The lush backgrounds, the voice acting, the music, the animation. The film has everything. I read part of the book and yes, they're completely different. But how is a child supposed to understand certain events. All well, all-in-all awesome movie.
I originally wanted to hate this movie. I was going to make fun of it. I was wrong. Why, because it has a very decent story unlike most Disneytoon sequels and they cared enough to bring some of the lost elements from the book. The music is actually memorable and the animation looks theater quality. There is some crap to sit through though. But the good weighs out the bad in this film. Even though it would've been better with it's original title "Bambi and the Great Prince of the forest."
Update: There has been a blu ray special edition announced. Totally getting
Upon seeing this film for the third time, (and after my dogs death), I completely understand what Pixar was trying to tell us. See it more than once if you can
The special may be sad, but it's different. Other than the other "happy" Christmas specials being released, this was far different for Christmas specials. It takes on a different theme than others also. Though Rankin/Bass does like to kill characters off in some of them. *cough* Drummer Boy, Frosty cough* This special would have been better if it was longer. But it's enough to cheer about.
And if you say the Rifftrax is the only way to watch this, you obviously are taking it way too serious or have no heart at all.
This is probably one of the best Christmas movies of all time! The innovative stop-motion is still just as affective as it was back in 1964. The narration by Burl Ive's is spectacular and Rankin/Bass took really good care of their first stop motion picture. I only wish that they weren't bought by Warner Bros. cause that's when things got bad for them. Still, a Christmas classic and a real honor to watch every year.
I was impressed with this Finland-made film. The story is very original with original characters. (Give or take Niko's "girl" friend, which is common) Also, this is one of the first animated Christmas movies that show reindeer as actual reindeer and not whitetail or mule. It is beautifully animated, and the design of the characters fit their roles in the story.
A lot of people complain about what the story is about. Turns out one of Santa's reindeer (not saying who) "visited" Niko's mother one night and got her pregnant. So Niko tries to make his way to "Santa's fell" (he already lives in the north pole) to try to find his real father.
I understand why this is a problem to some people, but that's real life. It's not like every other CGI animated feature is completely clean. (Looking at you "Surf's Up" and "Ice Age 3")
People need to stop complaining and enjoy the film as it is. It's pretty simple, but kid's can't hold a lot of attention to details so it plays nicely. It would've recieved a lower rating if American made but not over the top perverted (again, looking at you "Surf's Up" and Ice Age 3")
Amazing movie. Though they did use creative license to make the film fit withen movie time, it's still pretty accurate.
Believe it or not, "The Prince of Egypt" is actually the first animated movie to come out of Dreamworks, the filmmakers of "Shrek". Don't have this film confused with the crappy cgi "Ten commandments" movie in 2007 and no I don't meant the 1950's ten commandments either. Different movies. With it being a dreamworks film, it feels nothing like what you would consider a Dreamworks movie by today standards. You know, fart jokes, pop culture references, none of that is in this movie. (Sure we have like one joke about being bathed and some scenes that may have relation to matue content but it's not up in your face.) Actually for a family-oriented film, it is quite dark and mature. Nothing in the original story was altered or kiddied down. Sure there were some edits to make the film more epic like maybe "The Lion King".
This film has death, slavery, discrimination, all in plain view of the viewers. I'm not saying that children shouldn't see it. It's not that mature. Actually a lot of the first Disney films had these things in their stories, like that one scene where the queen wants Snow Whites heart. That's pretty much how far they go. Actually the worst of the mature themes is when Moses starts realizing what his "father" almost had done to him
Btw, did I mention the animation. It will blow your mind. That clip I showed earlier is probably one of the most impressive combination of traditional animation and cgi. The scene where the jews pass through the river is really cool too. Not to mention "boy and Small One cameo". I want to tell you more but I don't want to ruin it for you. I recommend blu-ray or watching the movie on a Hi-def t.v., though you'll have the same impact on a standard t.v. but it will blow your mind either way.
The character development is also very well done. The relationship between Moses and his brother is probably one of the most I've ever seen in a movie. They love each other like brothers and want to be that but don't want to give up on there destinies. Ramses is probably one of the only villains you'll see that you will feel sorry for. Now that's impressive. Some of the lesser characters like Moses's birth brother and sister stand out for some strange reason and give the audience the pain they are going through. We only see Moses birth mother in the beginning of the film as well. I guess she was cut for story changes. Like Aladdin's mother.
To tell the truth, I don't know why Dreamworks doesn't celebrate this movie as much as they do the Shrek films. There is a lot to the story and the film marks up on it quite well. Sure it's a shortened down version of the story. But the the points, morals, and wonder is kept in the story much how God had it in the bible. My only problem with the film is that the scene with the staffs turning into snakes does not focus on the the snakes. More on a musical number with the Emperors waiters or whatever naming off all their gods. The only times we see the snakes is at the very beginning and end of the song (show clips) I mean, that's a key point that shows God is more powerful than magic and no one in the film focuses on the snakes, just the song. What gives? Aside from that scene, this films a piece of art. It should set the standards of movie making like "Up" or "Lion King" did. However, it's not talked about anymore and it now lies withing the ten dollar movie shelf at Walmart. It may be a little more. But I guarantee it's worth every penny. Don't take my word for it, check it out.
Of course, Disney cuts the story down to fit a 1h 30m time slot but still performs a great film either way. I wander what Alexander looked like before he was turned into a donkey.
This movie is simply amazing. The animation isn't much, but the story is so well thought out and the makers weren't afraid to be mature in parts. It all just adds up to a great movie experience and children should be given the chance to watch it. I cannot do this film justice in words. Adults can watch this movie without children and they would be just as satisfied.
About the maturity, it has blood, urinating from canines, and death with open eyes. But it just makes the film stand out from the stereotypical childrens film.
Don't let the crappy edited American release (the little fox) fool you. It's not just for kids like it says on the box.
Way better then the live action films. For what they could do with it, they really put a lot of effort into this project and it shows. However, there are a few flaws. Animation styles always seem to change for certain characters and there were some cuts from the original story that they couldn't use due to time. There was some pretty cool stuff, it deserves to be a longer movie
