Star Trek
PG-13
I'm no fan of Star Trek. I couldn't care less about the originals, if this film is a blasphemy or how William Shatner is the only Kirk. I like this film, this version of Star Trek. As a film it's good clean entertainment. The plot might be silly and vague, and there's some of the worst acting I've ever seen - especially by Karl Urban. But I swear Zachary Quinto is a real Vulcan. His performance is captivating and lovable. And Chris Pine has star quality: that boyish charm, wit and humour and a bit of mischief to make a perfect captain of a starship. Together they bring soul to this film and make it interesting. There's also something innocent and good spirited about this film that you just have to be a real mean f... not to like it. Also, I like how the film is accessible; you don't need to speak Vulcan to watch it.
Live Free or Die Hard
PG-13
I hate to say this but John McClane is definitely ready for retirement.
This film just lacks spirit and enthusiasm. The plot is quite weak, especially the ending is a little too abrupt, maybe easy even, but I know Die Hard films aren't about the plot. The point of Die Hard is badass John McClane and he's got old and he doesn't even swear much! I already forgot who the bad guy in this film is, that's also a big minus.
Regardless, the film is entertaining and enjoyable, I mean it's still Die Hard, and I like the violence isn't as brutal and gory as in other action films. There are a few good action scenes and funny lines (for example 'killing a helicopter with a car').
I'll give the film 3 1/2 out of respect and sympathy for Bruce Willis (and Justin Long pulled his nerd part in this well).
