A word of advice: Avoid the English dubbed version of this film, it utterly ruins the magic of this film in it's native Spanish. A spellbinding, beautifully shot, love story of Pedro and Tita, and the passions of one Mexican family.
This is a personal favourite, and for a good reason. The combination of personal nostalgia and identification with the protagonists, is very poignant for anyone who grew up in the 80s. Beautiful love story.
I loved this film's premise, as much as the performances of Mastrantonio and Harris. Cameron's capable direction (and this is the film I forgive his Titanic-follies for) and the awesome visual effects, makes this one of the least dated Sci Fi films of its time. Check the extended director's cut for the fuller film.
One of Gary Oldman's best performances... he captures the mad paranoid deafness of Beethoven with astute nuance. It helps that the soundtrack is almost all Beethoven too, as he is my favourite composer, but the "Ode to Joy" sequence is phenomenal!
