The Shawshank Redemption
Beautifully directed. Great story. Unbelievable acting by Robbins and Freeman.
2
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
I'm writing this one down as one of my top 5 films of all time. Ledger's performance is everything the hype says it is. If you take away the "Batman" aspect of the film, the story being told goes down as one of the best ever. The characters develop quite nicely throughout the film. At its core, the Joker is one of the best written characters ever, again, only enhanced by Ledger's performance. Bale again proves that he is the best actor to have ever taken on the role. Nolan's direction of the actors and the action scenes is perfect. I'm torn between wanting to see a 3rd installment versus letting this one stand as the best comic film ever. One thing is for sure, 50 years from now if someone decides to make another Batman film, he or she should not include the Joker character.

Hard Candy 2005,  R)
Hard Candy
From the first scene of the movie, I had a feeling of discofort watching these 2 characters interact. The movie keeps those emotions going throughout the movie. Great acting and directing.
4
Juno 2007,  PG-13)
Juno
Hands down the best movie this year and in the last 5. There is no justice if this doesn't win multi awards at the globes and the Oscars. Ellen Page is absolutely incredible in the lead role. Since Hard Candy, I've said she is a star in waiting. This one proves she is. Beautiful direction and a wonderful script.
5
Unbreakable 2000,  PG-13)
Unbreakable
This is the best M. Night movie. This is how you do a movie based on a graphic novel if it were a real one. The acting, writing are excellent. Beautifully filmed.
6
Donnie Brasco 1997,  R)
7
The Visitor 2008,  PG-13)
The Visitor
The Dark Knight is my favorite film of the year. This definitely comes in 2nd. Great film with great acting by the 4 main actors. Jenkins, who normally does 2nd lead roles definitely deserves an Oscar nod for his role. One of the best human stories told in recent years.
