Hard to judge without seeing the original version (which was supposed to be a comedy) but the monster fights are excellent and the story moves at a nice clip when the American scenes aren't playing. Points off, though, for the AWFUL monkey suit.
Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and the introduction of King Ghidora, the planet destroyer! Kick ass four-way monster finale that still just brings out the kid in me.
All together now: WAAAAA-GWWAAA! Minilla would become an embarassment, to be sure, but damn it all if the little bastard isn't cute here. And the story never stops for a moment, with an entertaining menagerie of monsters. One of the weaker G-suits though.
More monsters onscreen and kicking ass than just about any other movie EVER!!! Who cares if the story is a tad dry at times, for all out monster action, this is still the one to beat.
Underrated monster schlock with decent effects and a nifty, trippy villain. The Gamera style kiddie flavor almost sinks it, but the monster action is passable.
My guilty pleasure of the series, I suppose, although I don't feel guilty about it. The human story is awful and dull, and the budget constraints were really taking their toll on the effects, but the four-way monster bout at the films climax lasts almost twenty minutes, and is a hell of a lot of fun.
The worst one of the series. Even an extended four-way monster fight at the end can barely salvage this wasteland of entertainment. And Jet Jaguar makes Minilla look like Dean Martin. Is there entertainment to be had? Sure. A bit. But unless your a G-fan, stick with the MST3K version. You might just want to stick with that one anyway.
The series really brought it back from the dregs with this entry. While imperfect, it introduces the big G's second biggest foe, and has enough wild plot developments to make up for the conspicuous lack of monster action in its midsection. And, despite his flea-bitten costume, King Seesar makes an entertaining addition to the Godzilla pantheon. Add to that the final appearance of Anguirus for thirty years, plus one bad ass, pissed off Godzilla reintroduction at the films end, and you have a fun way to kill 88 minutes f your life. Repeatedly in my case.
A personal favorite, which picks up where Godzilla 1985 left off. Exciting spy action, ferocious monsters, touching storyline, and kick ass action. What more could a monster movie fan want? Final stage Biollante is really an awesome sight to behold, and the Big G himself has never looked better. Whether your a fan or not, you owe it to yourself to check it out.
A fun and colorful entry, but really nothing overly special. Definitely worth a look, especially for the reappearance of Rodan, and the introduction of a new baby Godzilla, who really puts Minilla to shame. Just not one of the absolute best.
Cool concept, but poorly done. Space Godzilla, the new MOGUERA, the psychic angle, all should have been cool, but ultimately the monster fights are dull and some of the effects are almost laughable.
This one has really grown on me. The first time I watched it, I liked it, but didn't love it. The more I watch it, however, the more solid I think it is. Fun story with neat, though over the top monsters.
Cool monsters, but the story feels rushed and incomplete. And the sumo drop Godzilla lands on Megaguirus feels like something better left in the early seventies entries.
Quite possibly my favorite of the series. Epic fantasy storyline, awesome effects, unparalelled monster action, the reintroduction of fan favorite baragon, and a classic, cheer worthy demise for one of the series' most popular monsters. I can only wonder how much better it would have been with the originally intended Anguirus and Varan in place of the overused Mothra and King Ghidora, but then, we wouldn't have had that great death scene. Still, as it is, its still amazing. Top notch.
Two films in one. To be more precise, two pretty good films in one. Problem is, they don't fit together, and the one us monster fans went to see got short changed BIG TIME. Godzilla himself doesn't even show up until over AN HOUR into the film! Great to see so many classic monsters show up, and some really rockin' fight scenes, but most of the monster action is so brief its almost an insult to the fan base. A shame too, because there's so much to like here, but ultimately, the bad is equal to the good.
Here it is folks. The classic. The best. The big kahuna. The greatest giant monster movie ever made. The pitch perfect mix of an amazing story, brilliantly told, with still incredible special effects makes this the one to beat. And I doubt that any ever will. Try not to cry at the end. I still do. With the greatest closing line in film history (in my opinion of course). Peter Jacksons Kong did an amiable job, and even may have done a few scenes better, but for sheer out and out entertainment and emotion, lets face it, this Kong is still king.
"You know anyone else who's life was saved by 'Deep Throat?'
The first remake. What can I say, I love it. The best ape suit ever used in a movie, and a funny and endearing story that never really drags. We can forgive it the unfortunate lack of dinos, and even a few of the unintentionally silly bits, because hey, its just an entertaining movie.
I don't have a problem with the length per se, but there were a few scenes that could have and should have been cut. Still, when I go to see Kong, I go to see "Big monkey smash" and on that level, this movie rocks.
Underrated kaiju hokum with the typical bad monkey suit and enough colorful action and an entertaining story to put a smile on your face and keep it there.
Not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but possibly the least quality movie with Kongs name on it. Some surprisingly brutal PG action. Entertaining enough, but you won't revisit it like the others.
Probably my most watched movie of all time. It always leaves me with a smile on my fave, a tear in my eye, and a song in my heart. Opens up my imagination like no other.
My favorite musical of all time. Scared me shitless when I was a kid. Whats not to like? Its a momster movie with gut busting laughter and some of the best songs ever.
Possibly my second favorite movie ever made, as of this writiing. The three hous just breeze by for me, and the film is as powerful for me as any ever made. Amazing filmmaking.
Great great movie. James Cameron started strong and kept going until Titanic. Arnie is perfect and the endoskeleton is as cool a monster as any you are likely to see.
Probably one of my top 5 films of all time, though thats a hard list to make. One of the most exciting and powerful action films of all time. The final voiceover never fails to send chills up my spine.
My favorite superhero movie of all time so far. Much better effects, much better story, and enough truly Raimi touches to keep us fans appeased. Amazing film. Bring on Spidey 3!
Best Batman movie in my opinion. Christian Bale was awesome as the Dark Knight, and the rest of the cast was equally amazing. Great direction from Christopher Nolan too. Can't wait to see how they pull off The Dark Knight!
Fun at times, but there has always been just something about it that keeps me from loving it. Definitely my least favorite of the three, but entertaining nontheless.
I don't see what everyone's problem with it is. It's exciting and fun. Just what a comic book movie should be. Not as good as part two, sure, but good.
One of my two favorite Miike films, a feel good family musical comedy as only Miike could do it. At the beginning, you're scratching your head. By the end, you're crying and laughing at the same time. Beautiful movie.
One of my two favorite Miike films, I find it to be endlessly rewatchable. I've seen it six times as of this writing. Deeply, deeply disturbing, twisted and confusing. Miike himself admits he has no idea whats going on in this movie. Just think of it as the ultimate nightmatre. And hope to God that you wake up. I haven't yet.
My ex-favorite movie of all time, it still manages to pack a wallop with me. Terriffic action, loveable cast, great storyline (copied a thousand times) and a truly heartbreaking ending that puts me in tears every time. Uncommonly good.
The "Lord of the Rings" of shitty movies! Or "Star Wars" or "Gone With The Wind" or whatever your poison, this reigns supreme. I have seen this film more times than I dare count and reveal, and each time I am in utter awe at the complete awfulness of it, but in an oh so good way! This is bad people, but not in that dirty, Uwe Boll sorta way. No no no no no, this is in a class all by itself. The sheer ineptitude of every aspect of this film defies mere explanation. Winterbeast must be seen to be believed, and deserves a great DVD release that would surely gain it the cult status it desrves. Claymation monsters, flamboyant gay/Jewish villain, bizarre dance number, off synch dialog, 180 rule breaking, awful camerawork, nonsensical plot, the list of beautiful offenses goes on and on! And let's not forget the title creature itself, a drunken stumbler of a monster who swats ineffectually at the "heroes" as they desperately attempt all the random acts they can to pad out the length of the movie before walking off laughing despite the death of dozens of people.
But the laughs never stop for us. There has never, and likely WILL never, be a better shitty movie than this, and believe me when I say I call it that with love. You absolutely MUST check this movie out! You WON'T be disappointed.
