Spirited Away 2001,  PG)
Spirited Away
Hayao Miyazaki comes back with his new masterpiece. Simply beautiful.
2
Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan 1982,  PG)
Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan
The best Trek movie? Maybe. Khan is a great villain, one who other villains tried to emulate, but never succeed at it.
3
Whisper of the Heart (Mimi wo sumaseba) (If You Listen Closely) 1995,  G)
Whisper of the Heart (Mimi wo sumaseba) (If You Listen Closely)
This movie is so charming. It is simple, but deep. A lovely, carefully directed coming-of age animation by Ghibli's second master, Isao Takahata.
4
Kaze no tani no Naushika (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) (Warriors of the Wind) 1984,  PG)
Kaze no tani no Naushika (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) (Warriors of the Wind)
This movie is beautiful. Although it has a few rough edges, mainly because its budget wasn't as generous as in later Hayao Miyazaki movies, they don't really get in the way. Nausicaä is one of my favorite characters ever, brave, kind and strong. Unforgettable music from Joe Hisaishi. By the way, the manga is a must read and goes way beyond the movie.
5
Requiem for a Dream 2000,  R)
Requiem for a Dream
This movie is great in so many levels. But it's not for the faint of heart. It deals with some serious stuff, in a very serious and violent way. It also assaults the senses with the oppressive soundtrack and the haunting visuals.
6
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back 1980,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
In Soviet Star Wars, YOU are MY father!
7
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies) 1988,  Unrated)
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies)
The tale of a kid and his small sister after the Hiroshima bombing in Japan. Very sad and very touching. An unforgettable, melancholic movie.
8
TRON 1982,  PG)
TRON
It's far from perfect, especially from a screenplay standpoint, but it's one of my favorite movies. Sucked me right from the beginning, and if you pay attention to the details, you can find a lot of creativity in the art direction and in the clever special effects.
9
Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002,  R)
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
Technically excellent, this movie also sports a well-crafted plot. Acting and direction are both top-notch, and will keep your eyes glued to the screen until the ending credits.
10
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys) 1995,  R)
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)
Terry Gilliam does it again. In this sci-fi flick, one of the best ever, he even manages to pull an above average performance from Bruce Willis, and Brad Pitt is just great. This is a very clever movie which never underestimates the viewer's intelligence.
11
Dune 1984,  PG-13)
Dune
This movie is flawed in so many ways, but I still love it.
12
The Fifth Element 1997,  PG-13)
The Fifth Element
Awesome. I love everything about this movie: competent cast, tight direction, interesting music, creative art, and even the silly plot. Lots of fun.

Open Your Eyes (Abre los ojos) (Permanent Midnight) 1997,  R)
