21 Grams 2003, R)
One of the most astonishing movies I have ever seen. Just confusing enough to make it brilliant but it was fairly easy to figure out most of what was going to happen by about 1/2, just keeping the climax in the apartment secret. Acting was stunning from all the cast especially Penn, Del Toro and Gainsbourg. Deeply thought-provoking. All the R-Rated material was perfectly done, without a shadow of overkill or gratuitous nudity, violence etc. Brilliantly edited, directed and written. What more can I say. One of the closest things to the perfect film I have ever seen. |

Garden State 2004, R)
A film for disenfranchised, the numb, the lost, the protagonist being sedated by drugs, the rest of society sedated by pure boredom. Braff acts and directs brilliantly, in a unique role, a total break with his previous incarnation as John Dorian of Scrubs. Portman blew me away, one of my favourite actors and one of the few ?celebrities? I truly admire, her portrayal of a compulsive liar was fantastic. Holm was a nice surprise, not a bad accent. The soundtrack was truly great and well deserving of its high acclaim. With some great lines and some iconic moments, particularly focusing on the ?great abyss? of life, this is truly a classic of the future and one of the best films I've ever seen. |
