Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
One of my favourite films ever. Some brilliant dialogue and performances as well as gore and shocks make this one of the most iconic films of the 90's.It also made John Travolta cool again!

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
My favourite horror.Like witnessing a nightmare or something, if that makes sense!Leaves my adrenalin pumping afterwoods which is what a good horror film should do.
4
Night of the Living Dead 1968,  R)
Night of the Living Dead
Classic. The film that pretty much invented the zombie genre.Romero's brilliant direction keeps you on the edge of your seat as more and more zombies start gathering around the house that a small group of people have barricaded themselves in,as we see the people in the house becoming more scared until the almost inevitable climax.A great ending that was controversial at the time as it was original.
5
Interview with the Vampire 1994,  R)
Interview with the Vampire
I have finally finished the book and although the descriptions in the book are much better than what could have been put on screen this is still a brilliant ataptation with brilliant performances and great imagery. The story is really brought to life here and although there are a few things missing that were in the book the film still feels complete.
6
Oldboy 2004,  R)
Oldboy

A Nightmare on Elm Street

8
American History X 1998,  R)
American History X
Another brilliant performance by Edward Norton as a man just released from prison after serving three years for the murder of two black men that tried to break into his,and his family's home. This shows the events leading up to his capture and imprisonment, his time in jail and the effect it has had on his family. The amount of hatred that Norton's character shows for other races and later, his remorse for what he's done, makes this film so compelling and makes you realise that this level of hatred and ignorance in the world is very real. Also a great performance by Edward Furlong who plays Norton's brother, trying to follow in his,now old, footsteps which gets him in trouble in school.A powerful, compelling and moving story and a brilliant film.
9
Sin City 2005,  R)
Sin City
I love pretty much everything about this film. The story, the colour, the direction, the screenplay, the acting style. The Marv character is great,as are all the others really. Its just a great, very eye-catching, clever, action/black comedy-ish thriller.
10
The Devil's Rejects 2005,  R)
The Devil's Rejects
Horror films had gotten a bit lame for a while. All these films came out copying Scream and even before that people seemed scared to shock. Not Rob Zombie! With this and the one before,House of a 1000 Corpses,he brought old school style horror back to life.Great ending in this one to!
11
The Crow 1994,  R)
The Crow
A great horror/thriller.Brandon Lee is brilliant as the rocker who comes back for revenge after him and his girlfriend were killed a year earlier by the local gang. Some great moments of black comedy, drama and action along with a great soundtrack make this a very entertaining film and after watching you can't help but think that Brandon Lee could have gone on to great things after this.A great film.
12
Seven (Se7en) 1995,  R)
Seven (Se7en)
This film has been so influential since its release in 1995,you see it's style in many horror/thrillers that come out today.Brad Pitt and Morgan freeman put in brilliant performances as the two detectives looking for a man committing murders that mirror the seven deadly sins. You never see any torture scenes or real hardcore gore but you see, or hear about, the effects it has had so it doesn't take much to imagine whats happened to the victims. The last 20 minutes or so are brilliant as Kevin Spacey arrives and pretty much steals the entire film with a great performance as killer,John Doe.An unsettling, morbid ending to.Great story, well made and well acted.Bit of a classic!
13
True Romance 1993,  R)
True Romance

Wayne's World 1992,  PG-13)
Wayne's World
A comedy classic from a while ago. This film is so much fun to watch.Great lines,a good cast featuring Mike Myers,Rob Lowe,Lara Flynn Boyle and Tia Carrere, not to mention Dana Carvey's brilliant performance as Garth, and a nice little story to get into.Plus some cool music and a performance from the legendary Alice Cooper.Watching this took me back to when i was about 12 and watched it religiously.Fun,funny and just great!
20
Wayne's World 2 1993,  PG-13)
Wayne's World 2
One of the greatest sequel's ever!In this one,Wayne has to keep an eye on dodgy record producer Bobby Conway as he tries, not only to launch Cassandra's musical career, but to steal her off Wayne. The stress of that, along with Wayne and Garth putting on their own rock concert leads to some brilliant and hilarious consequences/situations.Zang!

A modern horror classic.A great, frightening story. The Sadako character could go on to become one of the classic all time horror villains.
36
Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror) 2007,  R)
Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror)
Well,i had a feeling i'd enjoy this film but not as much as i actually did! It's just mental. So gory but so much fun at the same time.Rose McGowan is brilliant as stripper turned world saving sexy bitch,Cherry Darling, but then you get the feeling that everyone was enjoying themselves, with great turns from Bruce Willis,Freddy Rodriguez,Marley Shelton,Michael Bein,Josh Brolin etc all fighting to save the world from zombies after a bio-weapon is released into the atmosphere. This is up there with one of the goriest films i have seen and also one of the best horrors i have seen. The missing reel idea is really cool,as is the grainy picture, giving the idea that this films been played a hundred times at a hundred different cinemas. It's just B-movie style madness to sit back and enjoy.
37
Hellraiser 1987,  R)
Hellraiser
A scary and iconic horror film. When a married couple buy a new house, the wife gets the shock of her life when her former lover, her husbands brother, seemingly returns from the dead and asks for her help to bring him back to the mortal world after he used a special box in an attempt to taste extreme pleasure and pain and was faced with a group of demons called Cenobites. He needs human blood to be brought back but the woman still agrees to help.Plenty of shocks and scares, along with gore and clever use of effects make this one of the all time horror classics.
38
Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002,  R)
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
The fact that this film is based on true events and what things are like in the slums of Rio make this a bit scary. Its a compelling, effecting story of hope, tragedy and freedom. Its got some great performances and was brilliantly directed.A great film.
39
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
A brilliant film, definately the best superhero/comic book film ever. Brilliant direction, again,by christopher nolan and great performances by the whole cast. This is just so dark, fair play to Nolan for making us (almost) forget how bad Batman Forever and, particularly,Batman and Robin were.As if he hadn't done that enough in the nearly as brilliant Batman Begins, he's made a motherfucker of a movie here!

Gary Oldman is given so much more to do and gives Commisoner Gordon some real depth. Aaron Eckhart is brilliant as Harvey Dent and his transformation into Two-face is pretty scary, thats helped along by some horrible make up.Balers of course, plays Batman very well, maybe the deep, husky voice gets a bit to much but it has to be done so is a minor grumble and its always good to see Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine in action. Not like that. But the best performance,as everyone knows by now,is most definately Heath Ledger's as The Joker. He doesn't just play The Joker,he IS The Joker.Scary, creepy, completely insane but very funny at the same time,it really is an amazing performance that deserves all the hype its been getting.

Add a great script, setting and musical score and you've got a pretty amazing film.
Yeah,it wasn't to bad!
40
Re-Animator 1985,  R)
Re-Animator
A cult horror classic. You know you've seen it all when you see a severed head go down on a women!A great horror film.
41
The Wicker Man 1974,  R)
The Wicker Man
I first saw this film when i was much younger and didn't have a clue what was going on;random songs,Christopher Lee in a dress, people in animal masks. When your very young it's all a bit confusing. But after watching it again i've realised its a bit of a horror classic! Those things that seemed weird before are actually quite creepy and the ending, which is distressing,is a piece of iconic cinema.Brilliant performances by Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee to.Plus, top marks to Britt Ekland for getting naked and singing while hitting her bedroom wall in some sort of pagan booty call.If i was Ed i would have been in there like a shot!
42
[Rec] 2007,  R)
[Rec]
Fuck Me,i'd heard all the hype surrounding this film and liked what i'd heard about the idea behind it but when i watched it i couldn't believe how much it freaked me out. This was like the first time i saw Nightmare on Elm Street 1 when i was younger or whenever i watch the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, that adrenalin rush feeling, heart pounding, even a few minutes after the films over. The fact that its quite short is what makes it better, almost like real life footage or something! The zombies are fucking freaky and the the whole thing is just great.Definately one of the best horror films i have ever seen, maybe just one of the best films overall.
43
Dawn of the Dead 1978,  R)
Dawn of the Dead
Scary and satirical with plenty of blood and guts!
44
Day of the Dead 1985,  Unrated)

Back to the Future Part II 1989,  PG)
Back to the Future Part II
Just as good as the first!
47
Halloween 1978,  R)
Halloween
The daddy of all slasher films.I hadn't seen this for years up until the other night but was instantly reminded why i love it.The tension and suspense built up throughout and in particular the last 15-20 mins is brilliant.A classic, one of the best horrors of all time.
48
Children of Men 2006,  R)
Children of Men
Bleak, depressing, distressing but thought provoking and intelligent to. Alfonso Curaon's vision of the not so distant future really gets you thinking but keeps you on the edge of your seat to.Brilliant film.
49
Funny Games 2007,  R)
Funny Games
This was one of the most uncomfortable viewing experiences ever.Part drama, part horror, part black comedy about a family going on a two week vacation at their holiday home in a posh area and getting terrorised by two friends. The whole point of this film is to look at society's obsession with violence, what's to shocking and how far is too far in terms of entertainment.Great performances from Naomi Watts and Michael Pitt as well as decent turns from Tim Roth and Brady Corbet. This could be seen as pointless if you don't get it and i'm sure its been described as "torture porn" by many people. But if you get the message(which is the most important thing),and admittedly, just enjoy watching people get bullied and humiliated, then this is brilliant!
50
The Matrix 1999,  R)
The Matrix
Its a shame the other two were so hit and miss cos this ones a bit of a classic.Guns, kung-fu,good soundtrack and the whole idea behind it is great. They shoulda worked on the theory more in the other two instead of just going CGI mad!
51
Batman Begins 2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
I had to watch this again before The Dark Knight and i'm glad i did.A great performance by Christian Bale as we see the origins of Bruce Wayne and the man that would later become Batman. Liam Neeson is also great in this although i'm not sure about his place as this films main villain,it was good to see him training Bruce Wayne and helping him realise what could be his destiny. It was also good to see Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow.Great film, great script and another great piece of directing by Christopher Nolan.
52
The Fountain 2006,  PG-13)
The Fountain
Sometimes you watch a film and when it's finished you wonder why it's taken you so long to get around to watching something so brilliant. This was one of those films!I'd heard about it and was interested but only the other night did i get the chance to sit down and watch this amazing piece of cinema.
This won't appeal to all film fans. It's a sci-fi love story for a start,it's pretty deep stuff but if you stick with it it could end up being one of the most rewarding film experiences you'll ever see.Great performances from Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, Jackman as doctor Tom Creo, trying to find a cure for his wifes(Weisz) cancer and save the woman he loves.
It's visually stunning, director Darren Aronofsky taking us to 16th century Spain, the present day AND the future, with the future elements being particularly stunning and despite the special effects of that period the film never loses any of it's emotional impact which is credit to the actors, Weisz and Jackman creating the perfect chemistry of a couple completely in love, with Jackmans frustrations and desperation and Weisz' acceptances and discovery of death and rebirth coming to the fore.
Credit must also go to Clint Mansell who's score is brilliant throughout, his music so fitting to all the moods within the film.
Overall,an original, striking film that although may be seen as to deep or even pretentious by some is a thought provoking and intelligent tale of morality, life, death, rebirth and ultimately, love.
53
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Captivating drama about a man who ages backwards. Meaning he's born with all the attributes of someone in their 80's and gets younger throughout his life. Obviously this makes things seem very strange and different to a young/old Benjamin and when he falls in love with local girl Daisy, and Daisy to notices something different about him, you just know Benjamins life is going to be one of great interest and emotion. We see Benjamin living as normal life as possible in 50's New Orleans as he gets a job working on a boat, but sooner or later he meets up with Daisy and also, unknown to Benjamin initially, his father. David Fincher has done it again. This is a great film with a brilliant story, a great cast and great ideas running throughout.
54
In Bruges 2008,  R)
In Bruges
Blacker than black comedy with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as hitmen Ray and Ken, who are sent to Bruges, after a problematic previous hit, to await details of their next mission by their boss Harry, played brilliantly by Ralph Fiennes. But when Ken is told by Harry what the mission involves,he's very reluctant to take part....
Colin Farrell is brilliant as struggling hitman Ray,who gets into plenty of scrapes during the trip.Gleeson is also great as the older, more mature hitman Ken,who wants to sight see and enjoy their time in Bruges and not just go out,get drunk and meet women like Ray!The style of comedy and the amount of fucks(as in the word, unfortunately)and cunts used in the film might not be to everybody's taste but this a well written film that can be dramatic and also very funny,in the darkest possible way.The ending is quite sad but also fitting. If you like well written and well acted films about hitmen in Bruges that swear alot and make politically incorrect comments this could be the best film you see all year!
Just saw this again so had to re-review it as i enjoyed it even more second time round!
55
Out of Sight 1998,  R)
Out of Sight
Brilliant crime thriller with George Clooney as bank robber Jack Foley who,in an escape from prison with his friend Buddy, take a female federal marshall hostage and drive off. It's during this journey that Foley and the federal marshall, played by Jennifer Lopez, find they are attracted to one another and although Lopez gets away, this make things difficult during the police/FBI's hunt for Foley, especially as they have to deal with the other dodgy characters Foley got involved with in his time in jail. This has some great dialogue and is occassionally funny, gritty and you can feel a real chemistry between Clooney and Lopez. Two great performances from those guys to.As well as Ving Rhames and the ever dependable Don Cheadle. There's even a brief appearance from Samuel L. Jackson at the end which gives the film a great send of. Cool, smart and witty from start to finish.
56
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead 2007,  R)
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
A brilliant thriller with Ethan Hawke and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as two brothers who come up with the perfect crime in order to make some quick, much needed cash. But when the plan takes a turn for the worst, the brothers' lives come crashing down around them.Very well written and directed with brilliant performances from the whole cast. This is a clever, riveting tale of betrayal and morality.
57
Predator 1987,  R)
Predator
Arnie classic. You all know it by now and only Arnie could defeat an almost invisible, seemingly invincible alien. This still looks great to, its like it hasn't aged a day since 1987! Its the elements of sci-fi, horror, thriller and war film all thrown together that make this a classic. And obviously Arnies one liners like "Stick Around" when using a knife to nail an enemy to the wall and "GET TO THE CHOPPAAA!GO!NOWWW!" being a highlight to. An action classic that if you haven't seen, needs to be sorted ASAP! GO!DO IT NOWWWWW! Etc.
58
The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
Great film and an amazing performance by Anthont Hopkins.
59
Dark City 1998,  R)
Dark City
Brilliant sci-fi thriller that i hadn't seen for years and completely forgot how great it is! When a man wakes up suddenly in a bath he has no idea where he is andwhats going on but finds he posses some interesting mind powers. But obviously being freaked out he's determined to find out whats going on and this includes run-ins with the mysterious "strangers" as well as a doctor who claims he can help him despite being involved with the strangers. The sets, ranging from 1940's to 70's backdrops, cars and fashion(50's) make this a very interesting film to watch but its the imaginative story and strong performances from Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland and the always great and gorgeous Jennifer Connelley, as well as an early film appearance from the lovely Melissa Gearge as a sexy whore, that make this a classic.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil 2007,  Unrated)
Anvil! The Story of Anvil
A funny and touching look at 80's metal band Anvils' slow but probably timely comeback. This documentry shows how the band hit their peak in the early-mid eighties before almost disappearing into obscurity. With singer Steve "Lips" Kudlow now working for a catering company but keeping the band going in his spare time and drummer Rob Reiner spending his time painting and looking back at what could have been, it seems Anvils time has come and gone. But after a european fan organises a tour, albeit a disaster, it kind of kick starts the band into action again and we see their journey as they attempt to keep the band alive and make a new album. This film is at times funny, sad and exciting as we see the occassionaly deluded Lips bang on about the past and still making it, he proves to be an endearing character, as well as clips of the band performing and profiles of other band members past and present. Throw in interviews with Lars Ulrich, Slash, Lemmy, Scott Ian and Tom Araya and you've got a great film that not just metal fans, but everyone, can enjoy.
61
Dead Snow (Død snø) 2008,  Unrated)
Dead Snow (Død snø)
I knew this film would be good but not as good as this! Its your typical horror movie fare; a group of friends go for a fun filled trip and get terrorised by a bunch of bastards. This time the bastards are NAZI ZOMBIES! Plenty of gore, scares and humour, along with the brilliant snow filled back-drop, keep this action packed horror going. Add a rocking soundtrack and you've got a brilliant horror movie.
62
The Thing 1982,  R)
The Thing
This 80's horror from John Carpenter has so many influential moments, special/gore effects-wise that its almost to much! When a scientific expedition is interrupted by a group of people in a hellicopter shooting at one of the teams dogs with no real explaination, things seem a little weird. When the dog later mutates into some alien creature type thing and attacks the other dogs it seems to whiole crew could become infected if they can't find and stop whats happening. A remake of a 50's horror when remakes were few and far between, this is rightly hailed as a classic.
63
Let the Right One In 2008,  R)
Let the Right One In
A great vampire film and the most original for years.
A bullied 12 year old boy, Oskar, falls for new neighbour, Eli, who is actually a 200 year old vampire. The film pays alot of attention to Oskar and his trouble with the bully's at his school and then his growing relationship with Eli. This makes the violent scenes even more disturbing and definately adds to the atmosphere, as does the snow filled backdrop of Sweden, giving the film a cold, bleak but at times beautiful feel, almost like a fairytale. There are some pretty gory and disturbing moments but there are also some tender moments with Oskar and Eli to and a brilliant, quite shocking ending. A great film, a great adaptation from the book and easily the best and most original vampire/horror movie for a while.
64
Dawn of the Dead 2004,  R)
Dawn of the Dead

65
Mulholland Drive 2001,  R)
Mulholland Drive
Another one where Naomi Watts is great!Think its her first big film actually.Obviously its strange because its David Lynch but if you give it a chance and think about it afterwoods its well worth it!
66
21 Grams 2003,  R)
21 Grams
Ok, this has been out a while but i only saw it quite recently.Benicio del toro is brilliant as usual and i think Naomi Watts proves shes one of the best new actresses around. Its interesting the way it all ties together.
67
Hard Candy 2005,  R)
Hard Candy
A brilliant, often hard-hitting and horrific drama/thriller about a 14 year old girl who meets up with a 30-odd year old man who she met on the internet and suspects is a paedophille, and after convincing him to take her back to his apartment exacts revenge in quite a psychopathic way! This a very well shot and directed film, especially considering nearly everything takes place in one location and the two central performances by Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson are amazing. You are constantly asking yourself, "is she doing the right thing or is she just insane?", throughout the film which is great because it keeps you glued to the screen and makes everything so much more effective/effecting.A film so brutal but at the same time so compelling that its just breathtaking. This seemed even better third time round. Just the powerful performances driving it along make it a cult classic, in my eyes.
68
Kick-Ass 2010,  R)
Kick-Ass
When i saw the trailer for this and read up on it i immediately wanted to watch it but shit on me, its even better than i thought it would be! When nerdy, comic book lover Dave asks himself, and his baffled friends, why no normal person has ever tried to be a superhero, the question takes him down an interesting, crazy but also dangerous route. As he attempts to be a superhero, calling himself Kick-Ass, he doesn't consider the dangers of being a real life vigilante in New York. Things become even more interesting, and entertaining, when he meets 2 real life superheroes, Father and daughter duo Big Daddy and Hit Girl. Add to this the pressures of being a normal teenage boy, i.e. trying to get with girls, in this case the lovely Katie, and life is becoming increasingly difficult for Dave. Kick-Ass is the most enjoyable and entertaining films i've seen for ages. The jokes are funny, the violence and fight scenes are good(and suprisingly gory) and the general story and script is great to. As well as the performances; in Hit Girl, the film, and possibly comic world could have an exciting new heroine. This is definately a film for people who fancy something a bit different as its a suphero/comedy/crime thriller rolled into one big masterpiece.
69
Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with Me 1992,  R)
Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with Me
Prequel to the cult classic TV series from David Lynch where we see what happened to Laura Palmer during the last seven days of her life. This is definately one to watch after you've seen both series of Twin Peaks as you need to understand that world of weirdness to get the film. But thats what was intended anyway as this came out a while after the series had finished. If you do get that world and enjoyed Twin Peaks as much as me then this is a great film, ful l of frightening images and dramatic and tense scenes that draw you in and won't let go. Great stuff.

This Is England 2006,  Unrated)
This Is England
Powerful drama set in the 80's. Young Shaun is lonely and missing his dad who got killed in the Falklands war.One day he meets a group of local skinheads who he becomes friends with. However, when one of the gang is released from prison and joins them things become less light hearted and more serious and the more "patriotic" side of the gang comes to light. This has to be one of the best British films ever.A great, true to the life and times story with great acting and a good soundtrack.

[Rec] 2 2009,  R)
[Rec] 2
Brilliant sequel to the Spanish docu-style horror. This carries on from where the last one left off which means your pretty breathless pretty quickly just like you were at the end of the first film! This time a medical officer and a SWAT team are sent into the infected building to find out whats going on and soon find themselves in trouble. What i like about this is that theres a deeper, darker reason behind the infection than normal zombie films, which was clearly hinted at at the end of the first film and is explored deeper here and even delivers a twist near the end that leaves things open for a REC 3. This might get a bit over the top for some and people might suggest that some of the realism of the first has been ruined but this is a horror movie after all and on that front, it definately delivers.

Whatever Works 2009,  PG-13)
Whatever Works
Brilliant comedy about an eccentric man named Borris who lives in New York and considers himself a genius. His life gets turned upside down when he meets Melody. A simple southern girl who begs Borris to let her stay in his apartment for one night. Soon Melody has wormed her way into Borris' apartment, his life and eventually, as unlikely as it seems, his heart. This is a very funny, at times touching film centred around fate with a great performance from Larry David as Borris and a perfect, brilliant one from Evan Rachel Wood as Melody whose change from simple but likeable to streetwise, smart and beautiful is great to watch. Some people might find Larry Davids character a bit grating after a while and i have to admit, he did annoy me at times, i mean, no one can be that arrogant and pessimistic can they? But then, thats what his journey is about really. Others might not like the parts when David/Borris speaks directly to the camera. I found it quite engaging and it doesn't happen often. Overall, Whatever Works is a funny, ultimately uplifting film and one of my favourites this year.

Lemmy 2010,  Unrated)
Lemmy
Brilliant documentary about the Motorhead legend. If you're a fan of the rock/metal scene in any way then you will have heard of Motorhead. Most probably through their classic hit Ace of Spades. This documentry focuses on their infamous frontman Lemmy and his rock n' Roll lifestyle from being a roadie for Jim Hendrix and seeing the Beatles at The Cavern Club in Liverpool through to the Motorizer album and tour cycle from a couple of years back. Theres plenty of contributions from celebrity fans and friends including Slash, Ozzy, Alice Cooper, Dave Grohl, Joan Jett and more telling stories of how they met and got to know Lemmy and the influence he and his band have had on them and the rock scene since the early-mid 70's. There's some rare photo's, interviews and live footage from his Hawkwind and early Motorhead days. There's also some rare sights including the inside of Lemmys messy LA apartment where we see him making chips amongst other things as well as him drinking at his second home, the infamous Rainbow Bar and Grill. A highlight is Lemmy rehearsing then playing Damage Case live on stage with Metallica. Life doesn't get much more metal than that!
The second disc on the DVD is great to. Offering over 3 hours of extras including extended scenes, mini documentrys on the other members of the band, a piece about some of the diehard fans, the all important roadcrew and more. A must see for rock/metal fans everywhere.

Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape 2010,  Unrated)
Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape
Brilliant documentary about the Video Nasties era of the 80's. In mid-80's Britain, when Margaret Thatcher was priminister and there was a recession n stuff, the goverment became a bit like a dictatorship and because crime levels were rising due to people having no money the only thing they could think to blame it on was the current wave of horror movies being available to rent in local video shops. Alot of these films were pretty shit B-movies with lots of blood, bad acting and little plot to speak of but because of the gore and violence the goverment decided this was causing moral panic up and down the country, infecting the youth, making people steal and mug people so banned them all.
Featuring contributions from various horror film makers who grew up watching them along with academics and film journalists and politicians for and against the censors, this is a very interesting documentary that makes you think about how corrupt and power hungry this goverment was and if these movies really could be an influence on the woes of society back then. The most reasonable answer you get from watching this is a big fat fucking NO!
The DVD is brilliant as its a three disc affair and shows all the trailers from the films that were banned and stayed on the list for years and the ones that were eventually removed. You can choose to watch these with intoductions from the various experts mentioned above or without, which is a cool thing as they go on for ages. Altogether, the doc, all the trailers and a montage of all the old title logs for the dodgy 80's distribution companies last for over 13 hours! I paid 20 pounds so its definate value for money.
Essential viewing for any film fan.

Psycho 1960,  R)
Psycho
Classic horror/thriller from Alfred Hitchcock. Ok, everyone should know this film but if not, a young woman plans to run away with her lover so steals money from her boss and drives off but a rain storm forces her off the road and to Bates Motel where she's greeted by the manager Norman, who seems friendly enough at first but later we feel that he might be hiding something as he talks about his mother and being lonely. We later famously find out that Norman isn't the full ticket and thats when this turns into a great thriller with plenty of suspense and revalations along the way and a creepy ending. Great performances to with Anthony Perkins now iconic role of troubled Norman Bates being the highlight. A movie classic thats very influential and one that every film fan should watch.

Jacob's Ladder 1990,  R)
Jacob's Ladder
Brilliantly nightmarish mystery/horror/thriller. When Jacob comes back from Vietnam he appears to be suffering hallucinations and flashbacks and is trying to figure out what happened as it seems something strange happened to him and his team on the battlefield. Jacobs visions are freaky and scary at times and there seems to be little clues throughout as to whats going on and sometimes this film doesn't always do whats expected and keeps you glued to the screen as you wonder whether characters and situations actually exist or really happened or if its all in Jacobs mind. Great performance from Tim Robbins as Jacob Singer. If your into horror, Lynch, Cronenberg and films that are good then check this out!

The Straight Story 1999,  G)
The Straight Story
Brilliant comedy/drama from David Lynch about an old man who, when he finds out his brother who he hasn't seen for ten years has had a stroke miles away from where he lives, he decides to go and see him. Problem is, our man Alvin has trouble walking and doesn't have his driving license any longer so the only thing he can use is his old lawnmower. Which he does. The performances in this film are amazing. Richard Farnsworth, who i previously hadn't heard of, is brilliant as Alvin Straight. As is Sissy Spacek as his daughter, Rose. The Straight Story is funny, charming and moving and for David Lynch, suprisingly straight forward! I put this in my favourites as i can imagine watching it when i'm old and it still being inspirational.

Empire Records 1995,  PG-13)
Empire Records
Brilliant cult feelgood teen comedy type film. Although this has a simple plot: one of the workers of the greatest record store of all time, Empire Records, gambles the days takings as he thinks he can win more and buy the shop out from the hands of an evil company but he loses all the money landing the shop in a big puddle of shit. What makes this film is the performances and the quirky feel of the shop and the characters. Its alot of fun and very offbeat at times but with quality actors like Anthony LaPaglia, Renee Zellweger and Liv Tyler, any of the films more dramatic moments work against all the odds. I've seen this film 4 or 5 times now and love it every single time and could easily watch it again as soon as its finished. So, the best workplace in the world, add in some cool one liners and a great soundtrack and you've got a cult classic.

Super 8 2011,  PG-13)
Super 8
Coming-of-age sc-fi thriller. A group of friends plan to spend their summer holiday making a zombie film but things go wrong when they witness a massive train crash and along with it, meet a short lived survivor who seems to know something dodgy is going on. In the wake of the crash, the kids' towns electricity mysteriously goes on and off, the towns dogs seem to have run off and people start to disappear. The kids try and finish their film but tensions around the town and the fact that one of the kids dad is the local sheriff make things difficult and things get worse with the constant military prescence.
There's great special effects and action set-pieces, some jump moments, plenty of excitement and a cool old school rock soundtrack but what really makes Super 8 great is the performances of the child actors, their relationships being the most important thing as you really care about what happens to them as we see a few of their families struggles which pushes a few of the friendships to the limit but its the strength of those friendships that hold it all together. The endings pretty cool to and we see the kids finished zombie film just as the credits kick in and with its nods to Romero and Hitchcock, its something that takes you back to discovering film and is a sweet way to end an exciting film. Super 8 is like The Goonies for 2011!
