TrollHunter - PG-13 Yes, you've seen it all before - but not in the same movie. January 27, 2012

127 Hours - R some good storytelling, lots to think about - but ultimately nothing new for me. January 22, 2012
N/A
Johnny English Reborn - PG a good few laughs. spot Rennie Pilgrem in a cable car. January 15, 2012
N/A
Real Steel - PG-13 Ultimately predictable and largely pedestrian story that does manage to whizz by considering the flick is two hours long. My kids thought it was better than the Tron remake. January 14, 2012
N/A
Irreversible - Unrated disturbing on many levels, yet somehow the ending of the film creates a level of understanding. this is like 'the butterfly effect' meets 'memento' with some soft porn and video nasty thrown in.

stick with it unless you suffer from severe motion sickness, the camera does calm down.

Employee of the Month - PG-13 pretty average comedy given extra star for nostalgia value - those blue chep pallets and orange racking really did it for me (worked in a supermarket warehouse as first Saturday job...) January 8, 2012
N/A
The Inbetweeners - Unrated fast, funny, forgettable. extra star because it is actually funny. January 7, 2012

Blow Out - R Missable re-imagining of Blow-Up, should be subtitled "search for a scream". Some great cameos by Nagra and Sennheiser, bumpered by an interesting opening and an atypical Hollywood ending that is over all too quickly. January 5, 2012

Blow-Up - Unrated An interesting piece of cinema history with possibly the most ridiculous ending to a (albeit somewhat tame feeling) thriller. Reminds me to catch with DePalma's Blow Out ..... January 4, 2012

Attack the Block - R pretty average fayre raised by some sharp dialogue and observations. good fun with a large smattering of patois innit. January 3, 2012
N/A
Drive - R The car chase may be disappointing compared to Ronin (but what car chase isn't?) and the gangster's thunder is largely already owned by Goodfellas, so what's left? A story about psychotic character's tit-for-tatting after a setup. Talking of setups, the first act does not give much away, a successful misdirection of sorts.

Nice dynamic range on the gunshots, nice.

I almost didn't notice the orange and teal scene (almost).

Cool, calculating pace - just like the protagonist. Your expectations of Boba Fett in some parallel universe - met in this movie.

Horrible Bosses - R Saw the extended cut, not knowing what to expect. Some pretty funny stuff, like a faster paced Fargo had a child with elements of Police Academy.

Language probably not for everyone.

Super 8 - PG-13 Not bad, but ultimately seen it all before. Slight evocation of '80s nostalgia ruined totally by 21st century orange & teal colour grade. Good to hear some ELO though I spose. December 16, 2011
N/A
The Hangover Part II - R Enjoyed it more than the first one. Loses half a star because the colour grade is terrible. December 16, 2011
N/A
Senna - PG-13 Thoroughly engrossing story of Senna's rise, rivalry, and ultimate fatality. Includes a spiritual dimension that I wasn't expecting from F1. Also demonstrates the politics at work in the sport at the time. From an era when F1 was very much character driven. December 11, 2011
N/A
The Thing - R Pretty good prequel with seamless setup for the next one. Extra star for the continuity effort, even if a bit flawed. Some great moments of "who's who" just like the original. however whereas the original wad character and plot driven, the characters in this new one are a bit single dimensional.

Nice ambiguous face-off at the end. however sometimes it seems like the alien motives are over-explained rather than demonstrated.

effects are ok, possibly not as memorable as Carpenter's due to lack of characterisations.

worth a look if you are a fan of Carpenter's version or, indeed, the original Who Goes There or whatever it is called.

Midnight Cowboy - R Excellent character driven two hours. Loses half a star because no film can be perfect. If you think you are an indie filmmaker in the 21st century with your RED, then this film sets your baseline. I may have an emotional attachment because I saw this flick on the TV when I was 10-ish and it left a hell of an impression. Despite not having seen it for 30 years, it could have been shot yesterday. More films should be made this way, it's so sad that everyone wants to blow stuff up and have car chases before they know how to pick up a good idea and direct actors. December 3, 2011
N/A
Captain America: The First Avenger - PG-13 Above average comic flick, well handled transition. Very Rocketeer in flavour due to Johnston, which is a good thing. You've seen it all before, only this time it's Art Deco. November 26, 2011
N/A
The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) - R Some pretty poor b-movie acting, but the lead is superbly cast. This is a story of what happens when you make a human centipede with gaffer tape and a staple gun. It's like any art project you'd find in Devon - somewhat uncomfortable viewing bordering on the ridiculous, yes. Extra half star for being black and white with a splash of brown. November 24, 2011
N/A
Cowboys & Aliens - PG-13 it must of looked so good on paper. it should've stayed there. November 23, 2011
N/A
Bridesmaids - R Has a quasi John Hughes '80s feel about it but is ultimately pretty avaerage chickflick. Extra half star for including Matt Lucas and anal bleaching, and an opening scene that opens with a bang. November 12, 2011
N/A
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - PG-13 Standard fare - however extra half star each for seeding a sequel subtly, a somewhat unexpected "no" moment which is largely in-line with vintage lore and revisiting the Redwood forest where I kept expecting to see the Imperial bunker and AT-ST.

The corporation messing with nature has been done to death, the story is kind of unimaginative but it's the few moments that punctuate that make this worth a punt. That, and it really does make me hope they can be bothered to make a sequel.

Severance - R Tediously predictable with humourous undertones. Extra half star for being annoying enough to watch til the end. October 29, 2011
N/A
The Fog of War - Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara - PG-13 Somewhat dry documentary that gives a good sense of of the personalities and complexities involved in wars of the 20th century during McNamara's tenure. September 27, 2011
