My Favorite Movies

  mijmark's Rating My Rating
1
McCabe & Mrs. Miller 1971,  R)
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Great story. Very real. Lots of bearish men, woof. That helps too.
2
Mindwalk 1991,  PG)
Mindwalk
Ok, not for everyone, but this dialogue film of conceps works very well. Three come to a myseterious place and a conversation between ethos, pathos, and logos embodied by the 3 main characters ensues.
3
The Abyss 1989,  PG-13)
The Abyss
The special edition of this movie adds a half hour extra to the film, especially towards the end. It makes all the difference in the world. It's a favourite all around.
4
The Devils 1971,  R)
The Devils
It is a must see movie; nothing else is like it, and the scariest thing is it's based on a true story. After seeing this movie you can understand why the Catholic church wants it banned.
5
Zardoz 1974,  R)
Zardoz
A little shlocky on the special effects, yet the mind games which go on in this movie, not to mention the whole message of it, the movie was ahead of its time. Besides, we get to see a hunky, furry Sean Connery naked for a second, woof.
6
A Clockwork Orange 1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange
There's so much to this movie, even if a little dated by now.
7
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead 1990,  PG)
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
It's hilariously witty. It ranges from pure slapstick to sheer wit. It helps if you know Shakespeare's 'Hamlet', but you'll enjoy it otherwise. I don't like Richard Dreyfuss acting as a rule, but in this movie, it's spot on.
8
Brazil 1985,  R)
Brazil
Such a dark comedy, which is even more relevant in this day and age with terrorists hiding under the bed. It's like 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' as if written by Franz Kafka.
9
Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1974,  PG)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
It's a classic. The other Python movies try to live up to it, but in my mind fall short.
10
Nomads 1986,  R)
Nomads
Loved the storyline, a modern day haunting and a descent from one world into the nether regions of another. I'd change a few things if I were writing/directing it, but it's worth watching, twice even.
11
King Lear 1984,  Unrated)
King Lear
Shakespeare adapted to film doesn't always work. This does. Sir L. Olivier's performance outshines other movies I've seen him in, and John Hurt as the Fool outperforms many of his other performances.
12
Kaze no tani no Naushika (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) (Warriors of the Wind) 1984,  PG)
Kaze no tani no Naushika (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) (Warriors of the Wind)
One of a kind. Miyazaki's best.
13
Ghost in the Shell 1996,  R)
Ghost in the Shell
Like 'Blade Runner' it poses the question of where does machinery end and humanity begin.
14
Ghost in the Shell 2 - Innocence 2004,  PG-13)
Ghost in the Shell 2 - Innocence
Better than the original, which was excellent. 'Blade Runner' eat your heart out.
15
The Mission 1986,  PG)
The Mission
The music, the story, the interactions, the message make this movie unforgettable to me. 'If might makes right, then love has no place in the world.'
