1
The Last Samurai 2003,  R)
The Last Samurai
Excellent acting, moving story, beautiful imagery.
2
Gladiator 2000,  R)
Gladiator
One of my all time favorites!
3
King Arthur 2004,  PG-13)
King Arthur
Excellent film that only suffered from stilted dialog and poor film editing in the theatrical release. DVD release was much better.
4
The Postman 1997,  PG-13)
The Postman
I liked Kevin Costner's vision of this story better than Brinn's original book. It was trashed by critics just because they wanted to simper over the big money-maker Titanic.
5
Ladyhawke 1985,  PG-13)
Ladyhawke
Beautiful story with top notch acting. One of Rutger Hauer's best efforts.
6
Braveheart 1995,  R)
Braveheart
Although history took a pretty good beating in this film I found the alternate tale and acting quite compelling.
7
Helen of Troy 2003,  Unrated)
Helen of Troy
I actually thought this version of the story more true to the Iliad than Peterson's feature film.
8
Attila 2001,  Unrated)
Attila
Good effort for a television production. My first introduction to Gerard Butler. Although some critics did not like Butler's performance, I thought Powers Boothe was the weak spot.
9
Julius Caesar 2002,  R)
Julius Caesar
Another good effort for a television production.
10
The 13th Warrior 1999,  R)
The 13th Warrior
Another good film that the critics trashed.
11
The Thirteenth Floor 1999,  R)
The Thirteenth Floor
Very intriguing story and luscious cinematography
12
El Cid 2008,  Unrated)
El Cid
Good historical epic. Excellent acting. Only wish more of the Cid's middle career was included.
13
300 2007,  R)
300
As a technologist I had to admire the CGI. Gerard Butler and company in leather speedos was nice eye candy as well.
14
The Untouchables 1987,  R)
The Untouchables
Taut and well acted. Sean Connery definitely deserved his Oscar for this one although Kevin Costner was quite good too.
15
The 300 Spartans 1962,  Unrated)
The 300 Spartans
More closely followed the events as related by Herodotus. Good job by Richard Egan as well.
16
Time After Time 1979,  PG)
Time After Time
Malcom McDowell is always an interesting actor to watch and I love time travel tales.
17
Ben Hur 2003,  Unrated)
18
The Ten Commandments 1956,  G)
The Ten Commandments
Another classic. I prefer the first half, though, to the second. Moses isn't nearly as interesting after he gets religion.
19
The Big Red One 1980,  PG)
The Big Red One
One of my favorite WWII flicks.
20
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 2002,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Great acting, story, and special effects.
21
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
I was actually surprised that I enjoyed this film so much. I'm not usually a fan of fantasy but this was a great story well told and well produced.
22
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2003,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Excellent film, fast paced, great costumes, terrific acting
23
Troy 2004,  R)
Troy
Although reasonably well done I was disappointed that Greek mythology was eliminated from the story line.
24
Alexander 2004,  R)
Alexander
I thought the acting was quite good (even Jolie's accent) but felt the film editing created a slowness to the production that could have easily been avoided.
