His only great film after signing on with MGM. And one of his best. MGM claimed to have worn their copy out by making all new employees watch it as an example of "the perfect comedy".
This movie is just about perfect. Great story. Fantastic performances. Gerard Butler. Beautiful Scottish setting and accents. Good soundtrack. Gerard Butler. Need I say more?
The first Keaton film I saw and still one of my favorites. Fantastic subtle gags and an adorable dog. Also, keep an eye out in the river scene; if you watch closely, you can see where a safety rope attached to Buster snaps. He almost got swept away and drowned filming that.
Three of the best actors of the era in a fantastic and funny film. It's a movie of subtleties and innuendo, where what ISN'T said is just as interesting (if not more so) than what IS said.
The lead was literally written for Hepburn and it's the role that brought her back into popularity, for good reason. Grant is, not surprisingly, fantastic. He passed on the role played by Stewart, which offers more screen time, for this one. What an excellent move; he's brilliant in the role he claimed. Stewart received an Oscar nomination for his part, which he rightly deserved. I only wish these three had been able to do more together.
I just loved it. Genuinely funny and moving, and with great performances. I just wish there had been more of the family. I could have easily spent another hour or so with them. :)
The acting is fantastic, the cinematography is beautiful, the story is dramatic, romantic, tragic, enthralling. Good soundtrack. There's nothing I didn't love about this movie. It may not be perfect, but at this moment I can't bring myself to rate this lower than 5 stars. It's a film that I will pay for, repeatedly. Happily.
It is long but only felt drawn out to me at one point, which is also the one place in the movie that a musical number felt unnecessary and draggy. Otherwise, the slow pace is made very enjoyable by the gorgeous cinematography, P.O.V. soundtrack, art, and little Darsheel Safary's face. My goodness, the depth and innocence that lies in that boy's face!
The story is not original--a troubled child misunderstood by all finds hope with the arrival of a new parental figure--but Taare Zameen Par (Like Stars on Earth) is my new standard for similarly themed films. I fear that most will pale in comparison.
It's a Bollywood film with music and minimal dancing, requires reading subtitles for English-speaking viewers, and clocks it at close to 3 hours. It's worth it.
