Irreversible
What was so amazing about this film is that it being Memento style, you see the acts of violence and cruelty for what they are instead of knowing the person.and understanding the reasons why. You walk away from this film as a completely different person in my opinion, looking at humanity in a new way and yourself as well. I do love the relationship that Marcus and Alex have, which is a relief since you are still a bit shocked from the rape scene. Being married in real life probably helps haha, but they gave the audience such a relief. Great acting, great story, the camerawork in the beginning though does get me a bit headachy.

The Last Picture Show 1971,  R)
The Last Picture Show
I was blown away by the film honestly. The cinematography was well above and beyond its time, the black and white made it atmospheric and moody. Mournful and graceful , the film's tragic characters in this dying town portray a certain sense of morality and a lackluster future. After I watched it I immediately had to put in something happier to keep me from slitting my wrists. Jeff Bridges is superb and really draws you in. There was so much symbolism and metaphors throughout the film that you felt as if it were some sad Allen Ginsberg type of epic poem. Everyone simply exists with no rhyme or reason in the best way that they can, they get the best they can get out of Anarene and so much of it is bleak and unforgiving. Truly a classic film that is one of the most beautiful films i've ever seen. Just that warning about the ending, you'll feel terrible.

Dead Alive (Braindead)
Braindead/Dead Alive is one of my all time favourite films. From the plot, cinematography, and the amazing stop motion that NEEDS to be used more Peter Jackson hits gold in this film. The gore is something in itself, and always satisfied me (which is hard to do), its hilarious, and overall one of the best films ever made. I love the custard scene especially.

Evil Dead 2
I always feel ostracized from people when I say that Evil Dead 2 is my favourite out of all of them. It surpasses the original for me, and as much as I love Army of Darkness in that each line said in it is quotable, this film has a great horror to comedy ratio. A favourite scene being the "whos laughing now" chainsawing off his hand. This film is my definite favourite and oh when Bruce Campbell says "Groovy" I get chills and instantly want to marry the man!

Velvet Goldmine
This film has nearly everything I want, it's the London 70's music scene and a lot of Bowie flair. It may not be for everybody but if you grew up listening to David Bowie or have a certain affinity for everything glam rock you'll fall in love with this. The soundtrack is wonderful, with everything ranging from Lou Reed to Placebo. It is a bit out there but very up my ally and Eddie Izzard was a delight in it. It is very colourful and a bit like a series of music videos at times. Visually stunning and once again it is not for everybody.

Premature Burial
The Premature Burial was a favourite Edgar Allen Poe short story of mine. The film is your campy B-movie type and I thoroughly enjoy it. Ray Milland is a lot different from the Vincent Price characters though but hardly disappointing, the set is wonderful, and the atmosphere is genuinely eerie. My father said this was one of the few films that kinda creeped him out (this and ventriloquist dolls)

There is a certain novelty to these types of films, that certain drive-in nostalgia and cheesy theme song (which I must admit is pretty catchy) It may not be the ultimate favourite I have among these types of movies but certainly is fun and I do enjoy the 80's remake as well.

I think this is a flick you have to watch a few times to really fully understand and comprehend all that's going on. Definite seventies flair, super psychedelic and Mick Jagger is too cool! I'll be watching this maybe twice more to really understand everything but my first impression was positive.

The Last House on the Left
I actually enjoy this film. The atmosphere, the music, acting, etc are impressive. It's more on the low budget indie side but that almost amps up the appeal for me. I like how the gang of killers are actually complex characters rather than trivial mindless killing machines. The ending in itself is worth watching for, but don't expect too much gore in this film.

This is seriously a hidden gem. I had read "The Hands of Orlac" by Maurice Renard and loved it. Peter Lorre impressed me with "M" but this was quite a novelty seeing him as the obsessed Dr. Gogol. I know this is a remake of the 1924 Austrian silent movie version, under the same name as the story, "The Hands of Orlac", there's also a 1960 remake and several other films that parallel the basic plot/theme. Ted Healy (original employer of "The Three Stooges" also is a treat to watch as the obnoxious reporter. Wonderful flick and I will be checking out the 1924 and 1960 version very soon.

They Live
I can't tell you how many times i've seen this film. It never gets old and it is probably my favourite John Carpenter film! A bit of a scifi/horror/black comedy and definitely has that 80's flair to it. I still to this day am very impressed with the alien makeup and thought this movie was very ahead of its time (in true Carpenter fashion) When the bubble gum chewing and ass kicking Roddy Piper puts the sunglasses on, we are revealed that our world is this Orwellian type of society and there are these fascist aliens all among us. Very creepy and will make you wonder about the true intentions of the rich yuppie type...

This is actually on my favourites list. This was a made for tv movie and definite period piece. I believe it to be a corner stone of all the anti-establishment films. It captures the big themes going on in the tumultuous Vietnam years, the cultural dissent, and the new emerging sense of identity and freedom to follow new values. Sgt. Frank DePayster is an unforgettable character with a strong disdain of hippies, "What kind of flower are you, boy? Are you a sweet pea, boy? Are you a sweet pea?" Adrian, the flower child, or sweet pea...is the epitome of a free spirit, teaching the platoon how to do the lotus position and remarking on the Sergeant's drawings of seagulls. A vital film of the rocky era that all should see, and unfortunately a bit hard to find, the only reason I could watch it is because my father had it, a lot of torrent sites have the vhs converted to dvd so you can probably snag it online.
