Taken 2008,  PG-13)
Taken
When I first saw the TAKEN teaser trailer with the "I will find you" monologue spat out by the great Liam Neeson, it was crystal clear to me that I would love this movie...
Neeson's captivating performance as the loving and no-non-sense daddy-spy hit the spot. I so dug how he was always in control and ahead of the game. Shit, even while his daughter was getting bagged, the man was two steps ahead.
You got to respect that! It made for a cool hero trait. Add to all that a razor pace, frenetic editing that jacked up the restless vibe of the situation, a couple of hard hitting emotional scenes (the kidnapping had me) and some great bits of dialogue and you get simple flick that got the job done!
Alas, striving for such a furious pace came with a price: the potential depth the film could've had.The worried mother, the daughter's POV as to her ordeal ? NOTHING on them!
By and large, TAKEN shamelessly entertained this simpleton for an hour and half. No frills, no pretenses, just Liam Neeson mowing through human trash to get his daughter back. Nothing wrong with that! Give me a SEQUELLLLLL!

Iron Man 2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
A fun ride & an entertaining "origin" film that doesn't really get going until its second half, but once it does, delivers on the goods, especially in any scene in which Robert Downey Jr. is in the Iron Man suit, or any scene in which there is a close-up of Jeff Bridges' ingenious beard! I really appreciated his beard & felt the need to nuzzle with it as several points throughout the movie. The film definitely delivers in a variety of entertainment categories including action, comedy, thrills & even some drama, thanks to Downey's well-toned acting chops. It's not the greatest superhero movie ever made, but it's a damn fun ride that's definitely impressive!

300 2007,  R)
300
300 did it all and with panache, bold style and a big set of "couillons" too boot! It touched & inspired me with its themes. It wowed me and gave inimitable goodies via its novel settings and totally out there eye candy. Finally, it got my blood pumping in overdrive with its aggressive demeanor, its furious battle scenes and its eager reveling in ample bloodshed. What else can one want! Sure, I could've done without the "Cantina" rejects that stepped in here & there; but no big deal, I was able to get past them. So you in the mood for an outrageous and distinctive film with heart, balls, thrills and, spills for the girls?
Needless to say that we, ladies were blessed via this effort. You dig your buff shirtless dudes gals? HERE YA GO! They even get Gerard Butler's butt!

The Libertine 2004,  R)
The Libertine
The movie is beautifully depressing, much like the England it portrays. Often dark and grainy.
THE LIBERTINE is not for the faint of heart or will, and both Depp and Wilmot will put you to the test on how much excess one person can take. I can't stress enough how you will despise Wilmot but somehow you keep watching to see what the hell happens to this guy.
it's like Behind the Music without the Music. Luckily, redemption is in Wilmot's future and when it comes, you will be so into the thing that you'll feel great emotion. In short, THE LIBERTINE is one hell of a dark and depressing journey, but I found it worth taking. However, as Depp claims at the beginning, not everyone will like it. Thanks to Johnny Depp for being in the movie, "i loved it".

Hable con Ella (Talk to Her) 2002,  R)
Hable con Ella (Talk to Her)
Many people tend to shy away from foreign cinema because it involves a lot of undertones, symbolism & in some cases heavy doses of pretense. I, for the most part, like that & welcome the difference. But, rest assured TALK TO HER/HABLE CON ELLA can be fulfilling on any level you wish to view it on. I've been a fan of Almodovar since seeing WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN. He's taken it upon himself to focus primarily on women in his films & time & time again, manages to bring a fresh & moving tribute to "us" wonderful creatures. The title says it all, TALK TO HER/us, the wonders that a few words can do to the fairer sex (and actions obviously)!!!
It's nice to get out of the monotony of & try to see what wonders some of the foreign cinema has to offer. A MUST SEE; it boasts a finely crafted script with great acting & another wonderful tribute to the powers that all women have & what some men must do (and often can't) to reach the deepest, darkest depths of our heart. Heh, heh, seriously though, if ur still hesitating on trying out ur first foreign film, I can't think of a better film on which to get the ball rolling than this one... SO. GO ALREADY...

The Gold Rush 1925,  Unrated)
The Gold Rush
The word "genius" is thrown around more often than Paris Hilton nowadays, but when you consider the efforts the great Charlie Chaplin went through for every single one of his films, then it's no wonder that he's always one of the first movie stars that comes to mind whenever that word is mentioned. The man directed, wrote, acted in, produced, composed the music. What makes that all the more remarkable is that the result is a really sweet and joyous little movie that showcases one of the most gifted physical comedians to ever grace the silver screen. Chaplin's irresistible charm and magic will undoubtedly bring a smile to your face and almost certainly a little pang to your heart.
I guarantee your love and appreciation for classic cinema will be heightened after experiencing all over again, or even for the first time, the indescribable feeling one gets from being in the wonderful world of a Charles Chaplin movie.

Before Sunset 2004,  R)
Before Sunset
I'm a big fan of the romance genre, especially those that don't end in the usual happy Hollywood ending.L inklater, Hawke and Delpy's screenplay has made the characters mature quite realistically & yet their youthful, hopeful selves from nine years ago shines through every now & again in those special, private, almost undetectable moments between the two characters. Usually it's just a simple look & change of expression that gives it away & it's those moments that make the magic of what makes a movie so genuine & romantic come alive. It's beautiful, perfectly-chosen & inspired.
If ur among those who love dialogue-driven films & romances both bitter & sweet then "find ur copy"!!!
