They Might Be Giants
Is there another movie like this out there? One that dares struggle with such a unique and personal vision of the world and, what is more, explore the consequences of that vision? Add to that that you're buying into it, because George C. Scott makes such a memorable almost-Holmes, and the characters are so competent that you wonder if you're watching things fit because of serendepity or skill. This is probably my favourite movie of all-time. Make sure you get the DVD, which includes the supermarket scene that was cut from the theatrical release.

It's almost as good as reading the book. And we always hear about Colin Firth - and yes, he is just about perfect in this movie. But consider Benjamin Whitrow's quiet, understated, subtle portrayal of Mr. Bennet. He takes the funniest role in the novel and transposes it almost seamlessly to the screen - no easy task, and none have done it better.

I feel for Jerry Stiller's Morty Fineman. Why can't he have his buffalo? The script calls for a whole herd! I think that's one of the funniest scenes in the movie, but the whole thing has me in stitches whenever I watch. Roman numerals to denote movie sequels? Fineman invented those, like "World War III II." Stiller is amazing in this role, and he has a good supporting cast, though this is about as close to a one-man show as you can get these days. I thought this movie was brilliant, and it really showed the spirit of the amateur, through the good times and the bad.
