A Streetcar Named Desire 1951, PG)
Fantastically insightful piece on human nature. The writing's more wonderful than the acting but that's mostly down to the style of the time. A couple of changes have been made from the orginal play, but it still stands well, if not quite as dark as it's source material |

I really hadn't expected to like this one, but there's plenty going on under the hood- sharp dialogue and cheeky subtextual commentary. Classicly understated comedy moments like the Girl from Ipanema lift scene. Great fun, beautifully shot. Jolie looks like a christmas present waiting to be unwrapped. |

Watching it again nearly twenty years on I realised how wrong I'd been- it really is a wonderful film, enhanced if you're familiar with certain UK stereotypes. Look out for Rose Tyler's mum from Doctor Who! |
