13
Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
A masterclass in storytelling. Linda Hamilton is amazing as the trauma survivor of T1, reinvented as a relentless saviour of mankind regardless of the cost. Great exploration of masculine and feminine ideals versus their real truths. Favourite scene- Sarah Connors instant transformation from hard ass unstoppable force to jelly-legged whimpering wreck when confronted with what she thinks is her nemesis from T1
14
A Streetcar Named Desire 1951,  PG)
A Streetcar Named Desire
Fantastically insightful piece on human nature. The writing's more wonderful than the acting but that's mostly down to the style of the time. A couple of changes have been made from the orginal play, but it still stands well, if not quite as dark as it's source material
15
K-PAX 2001,  PG-13)
K-PAX
A great movie about challenging accepted assumptions and beliefs. Wonderful.
16

There can be only one. Except for all the sequels. But I still love it

The original pick 'em off one at a time movie. And it'll teach you what it feels like to be a TV dinner.
18
Amadeus 1984,  PG)
19
Dangerous Liaisons 1988,  R)
Dangerous Liaisons
Brilliant piece on human nature, though I'm with the guy who said: "Malkovich is mesmerizing. But in what universe is the reward for seducing Uma Thurman and Michelle Pfeiffer getting to sleep with ... Glenn Close?! "
20
The Matrix 1999,  R)
The Matrix
There is no spoon.
21

Big Daddy
Hilarious if you've ever had to look after a child
26
The Bourne Identity 2002,  PG-13)
The Bourne Identity
Everything a bond movie should be but never has. Slick, tightly cut and engaging, Damon really surprised me as an action type.
27
Mr. & Mrs. Smith 2005,  PG-13)
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
War of the Roses for the post-therapy generation... Sparkling sense of fun between Jolie and Pitt. I really hadn't expected to like this one, but there's plenty going on under the hood- sharp dialogue and cheeky subtextual commentary. Classicly understated comedy moments like the Girl from Ipanema lift scene. Great fun, beautifully shot. Jolie looks like a christmas present waiting to be unwrapped.
28
Batman Begins 2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
Batman with balls. At last.
29
Adaptation 2002,  R)
Adaptation
Fascinating take on art and neurosis, missed opportunities, creative avoidance, excuses and the way we can needlessly complicate things on occasion
30
A Fish Called Wanda 1988,  R)
A Fish Called Wanda
"It's K-k-k-k-k-k-ken! He's c-c-coming to k-k-k-k-kill me!". Genius.

Kingpin 1996,  PG-13)
Kingpin

35
Hawks 1989,  R)
Hawks
A fabulously warm hearted and touching film. I first saw it on a date when I was fifteen and didn't get it at all- I found it dull at the time. Watching it again nearly twenty years on I realised how wrong I'd been- it really is a wonderful film, enhanced if you're familiar with certain UK stereotypes. Look out for Rose Tyler's mum from Doctor Who!
36
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

Roger Dodger
Campbell Scott is fascinating as the savage anti-hero, sowing tragedy and destruction wherever he goes, unable to help himself, toying with people because he can
38
Office Space 1999,  R)
Office Space
If you've ever worked in an office (and hated it), you must watch this. There's a short section that seems to drop the ball for a while, but otherwise, brilliant
39
About a Boy 2002,  PG-13)
About a Boy
North London boys like myself of a certain background and vintage will see endless entertaining parallels in here... a real winner, with Hugh Grant being a lot more fun than he's usually allowed to be
40
Superman 1978,  PG)
