Kurosawas masterpiece interweaving incredible drama with stunning action in this thrilling samurai epic. Often copied but unmatched in the history of cinema.
A true marvel of film making. From conception to casting to direction; City Of Gold is brave, yet confident and bursting at the seems with brilliance. It's a film that can be watched again and again and yet never loses any of it's energy of bite. The pinnacle of story telling and film making.
This is a really exceptional film that satisfies the viewer on many levels. As a love story it is a simple yet sad tale so well constructed and beautifully acted by all the cast, but more than that, this film is a wonderful journey through the eye of a genuine cinematic auteur. There are so many iconic scenes in this film that it's hard to believe that it was made so long ago with so few of them imitated since. It is a film students dream and the viewer can delight in a piece of work where every shot seems to have been chosen with such attention to detail that you can but marvel in the creative ingenuity of both the cinematographer and director. A real gem of a film that puts many subsequent "Arthouse" pieces to shame. I was recommended to see this film by a former film critic and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who really loves cinema. This really is a masterpiece of great beauty and ingenuity. I genuinely urge you to see this film :-)
A wonderful Hitchcock masterpiece. Bergman and Peck pair effortlessly in this stunning piece of murder mystery intrigue. The Salvador Dali dream sequence is wonderful!
It is a rare occasion when a sequel surpasses the original and this is one of those times. More violent than it's predecessor, but more complex too. The brilliant interweaving of past and present is simply fantastic. Pacino and Caan are amazing as are the rest of the cast and the score.
An amazing adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Set in feudal Japan with Kurosawa regular Toshiro Mifune masterly taking the lead role accompanied by by equally stunning screen performance by Isuzu Yamada as his wife. The ending has to be seen to be believed and has not been bettered to this day.
The last great Besson film before he went to America and what a film! So often copied; this films influence is far reaching and yet it's brilliance is unmatched.
A dark and relentless thriller that illustrates the mastery of Lang's directoral skills as well as the influence European directors held over the genre.
Classic crime thriller which sets the formula of jumping backwards and forwards in time to develop the storyline. Kubrick creates a tense, hugely influential masterpiece of the film noir genre that still holds it's own today. A must see for fans of Tarantino movies.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest period costume dramas ever made. Amazing locations, opulent sets and costumes and a tempo unmatched in any other film. Kubrick's masterpiece is unserpassed in the annals of cinema. An utterly captivating and beautiful work.
I haven't read the book and probably never will. So for me, this is a journey to the source of sci-fi cinema, and one that never ceases to dazzle my senses as if it were the "acid trip" it was originally described as. A film of such beauty as yet unmatched in this genre and many others alike. Kubrick has never tried to rush anything, and this film is a testament to the virtues of a slow and deliberated approach. The only PERFECT science fiction film in my mind; visually, at least :-)
Well paced, beautifully shot and loaded with minimally played out drama packed scenes make this a gem from the opening shot til the end credits (questionably present in a pink script font). With the simple yet subtly complex characters and the pulsating electronic soundtrack you could easily believe you were watching an 80s French classic. Certainly the best film I've seen this year, make sure you see it too :)
Bleak and sad science fiction film that deserves it's comparrisom to 2001 and Solaris. It is often a tongue in cheek approach to the scenes that most closely resemble its influences, but this just adds to the whole feeling this film delivers.
Brutally realistic, darkly twisted, a wonderfully original thriller/horror that pulls no punches. The ending can be guessed a mile off but somebody please explain why she was protecting the house?
