My Favorite Movies

Recuerdo que mi profesor de textos dramáticos decía que el melodrama era un género barato y sensacionalista. Tal vez no ha visto las películas de Almodóvar y mucho menos Los Abrazos Rotos. El melodrama adquiere una profundidad y una complejidad de una madurez que hasta ahora no encuentro en ningún otro melodrama en cine.
Como buen fan de este director, no puedo dejar de alabar esta película, sin embargo, me parece objetivo decir que es uno de sus mejores trabajos. Un montaje chido chido, una estructura narrativa impresionante, un elenco adecuado y entrañable (las chicas Almodóvar de los ochenta y noventa dando participaciones especiales), una revisitación de la alocada y alegre Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios para contrarrestar un poco la amargura y tristeza de la historia que vive la pareja protagonista y un eterno dejo de melancolía rondando por cada toma la hacen una experiencia que hace mucho no tenía al ver una película en el cine.

Once again François Ozon breaks the rules and show us a very weird story but settled on the background of the every day and the family next door. I enjoyed how the hard life and the struggle to live in this world is mixed with a mystical hope and happiness.

Una vez más, Ozon rompe convencionalismos. "Solo los niños van al cielo" (que horrible título le pusieron) Se trata de una historia que al contarla podría parecer demasiado irreal, predecible y cursi, pero esta tratada y contada de una forma tal que no sólo se aleja de estas tres cosas sino que es dura, triste y realista y a la vez alegre y realmente fantasiosa. Todo este juego de contradicciones hacen que a pesar de ser una película que nos muestra las duras realidades de las relaciones familiares y de vida, salgamos del cine con una alegría muy particular.

Mexican cinema has many hard to erase precepts that usually tend to make films old fashioned and predictable: the story is set on the neighborhood la Condesa, young characters are blond or then they are poor criminals, the sondtrack is sung by Julieta venegas or friends, the actors are usually the same, the topic can only be a romantic comedy or a drama about the miserable bottom classes or a black comedy about insecurity or an art drama set on the villages. This film shows a new way to approach to the young, the being an outsider, the possibility of setting a story outside mexico city without being a farm story. Is the so told Romeo and Juliet but it is told in a new (at least in mexican cinema), fresh way.
Me en-can-to! La juventud es pocas veces tratada con tanta novedad y autenticidad en el cine mexicano. Aunque el guión parece un poco más introspectivo que Drama-mex, el resultado es mucho más maduro e interesante. Los personajes jóvenes se nivelan a la perfección con los adultos (el regreso de Rebecca Jones muy oportuno) y la historia es sencilla pero contada de manera muy vanguardista. Guanajuato es aprovechada muy bien para ser el lugar donde esta historia da a lugar. El único pero que le pongo es que en algún momento cerca de la segunda mitad pierde el ritmo y pudo acortarse todavía más. El final tampoco me gustó mucho.

The biggest surprise I received as I was watching this film. A very good way of telling a story with the label "for kids" but also a showing the future in a very similar way I use to think it will be: kinda pesimistic. It can be one of these films you loved when you were child but when you grow up you like it more. You see on this film some very good moments in which is clear the goal was not to make an entertaining movie but a real author expression (wich is very hard to see on a kid's movie) the characters even more profound than many more humans we see in another films and the story develops perfectly.
No pensé que me pudiera gustar tanto. generalmente Pixar tiene en sus películas una fórmula que siempre ha seguido porque le ha servido. En esta pelicula sigue teniendo muchos de esos ingredientes: un chistecillo cada rato, personajes más que enternecedores comercialmente explotables, prototipos sociales, aventura... pero ahora se arriesga un poco más en mostrarnos una visión de la vida futura y de lo que nos hace ser humanos pues finalmente Wall.e termina dando lecciones de humanidad.

Usually, when I see this kind of films in which a bunch of directors direct a short film each, Some of these shor stories are ok for me and some others are just wasting space and time there. This is the first film I was most of the time delighted from the stories and the strong impact Paris has on me. The only story I didn't like was the awful SinCity-like with Elijah Wood (My favourite was the Alexander Payne's).
Bonita, no suelen gustarme este tipo de peliculas compuestas por pequeñas mini peliculas que hacen que pierdas el sentimiento de la anterior. En este caso el sentimiento de Paris siempre está presente se trate de una historia de mimos, de vampiros o de religiones diferentes. Desde luego hay unas que gustan màs que otras y está bien proporcionado el orden en el que se muestran. Un elenco internacional tanto de actores como de directores (aunque predominan los gringos y franceses) hacen que pueda parecer un poco larga despuès de sentir que uno ha visto muchas historias pero al final dejan un buen sabor de boca y muchas ganas de ir a Paris.

Since the credits I started to have spasms, great mix of contemporary music and detailed ambientation of the age, great cast, a very youthful way of showing an historical character. I don't know what else to say, it's the film I've enjoyed the most in many many time.
Wow, dónde podré ver tantas cosas y personas que me encantan juntas como lo he visto aquí? La historia no está nada lejana de la biografía de cualquier rockstar o socialité desmadrosa de nuestra época y por eso la música y demás elementos narrativos están alejados de las convencionalidades que hay siempre en el cine histórico y sobre todo de esa época, sin embargo sigue teniendo el rigor y la disciplina de éstas para que pueda seguir siendo una película interesante y entretenida. La vi anoche y ya la quiero volver a ver.

The kind of stories about difficult topics and intense dramas but told as if it were a fairytale. I was captivated since the beggining, I never tought the Pink Floyd-Rolling Stones-David Bowie-Patsy Clyne-soundtrack would be as powerful as it is on this film (it's not the best thing of it but it's the only one I dare to talk about righ now).
¿Por qué estas películas pasan desapercibidas por los grandes públicos?
Es entretenida, está bien hecha, es intensa, original... porque auqnue es una historia que hemos visto muchas veces, la manera de contarla es lo que la hace grande.

I hate war films, specially those about II WW and SPECIALLY those American points of view in which Jews are all poor, good and victims, Germans are all bad, bloody and motherfuckers and Americans are all merciful, smart and heroes. On this film, that transpirates something similar to realism, we see the German side of the story, is not a nice approach to nazis, but you can also see how (or why) this party had such a great power... and how it began to lose it. You don't see the spectacular war scenes filled with blood and human extremities flying as you see on films such as Saving Private Ryan, most of the story happens at the Bunker, but nonetheless, you get even closer to the war tragedies and the strong emotions and situations of the people was in.
Que buena película! Desde que se abre la puerta de su oficina, todos quedamos igual que las secretarias inquietos por el personaje que está a punto de salir: es el mismísimo Hitler, el ser más despreciado del mundo y por lo mismo el más importante de los últimos dos siglos. En este retrato, no sólo de él sino de muchos protagonistas de esta historia de la Humanidad, nos enfocamos no tanto en los horrores de la guerra como en El Pianista ni en el Bueno vs. Malo de la Lista de Schindler, sino en algo que huele más a realidad y a la vida. No le encuentro defectos.

I loved the characters, the music, the dialogues and specially the crazy world of dreams-ideas shown on this film. This is the role I like the most from all Gael's films. Here he sings, plays the piano, the drums and speaks in three laguages. Michael Gondry disappointed me on his earlier films but with this one, he's the man again.

At the beggining it might seem too naive, but at the end we found that it's a very entertaining movie (at least to all Almodovar's lovers) with very good actresses (my favourite is Blanca Portillo and, as usually, Carmen Maura). When I saw it i cried and laughed.

I adore it! Maybe the story isn't that interesting and many scenes are rather grothesque, but the characters and the musicals were very enjoyable to watch. I'ts too bad I couldn't watch it at the cinema and I had to see it on tv.

I enjoy it because it refflects one moment in my life, not only because of the translation but specially because of the hell she lives doing something she doesn't like and avoiding what she really needs to do to feel complete. It's a smart comedy and it's settled in Japan which I love.
En México no la han proyectado, no sé por qué en los dichosos festivales de cine en francés pasan cada churro y se abstienen de poner películas como ésta. La ví de puro milagro en Cinemax. Toda la película es en unas oficinas de un centro corporativo, pero aún así es entretenida.

GOOOOOD I have recently and fortunately been in touch with oriental cinema. And this is a very fresh, tender, funny and poetic approach to it. What can I say about a film in which action is not the main thing? The prologue, full of violence and fast happenings opposites with most of the movie, in wich silences, and particulary the homes and places the characters live in tells us much more than the things they do and say. Human relationships and allienation is beautifully portayed here. The total look of the film is also out of the old school but having a lot of references.

I love Japan. I really connected with the main characters. It's a story that has that elegant way of showing the world and being fresh and new at the same time. The couple isn't perfect, both are married with someone else in the first place. But their relationship altough never "consumed", at least in the Hollyood way, is full of tenderness and melancholy. Melancolía o como se diga en inglés, es lo que me transmitió esta película cuando la vi por primera vez, y unas ganas grades de conocer Japón, aunque sienta la misma soledad que sienten los protagonistas en la primera parte de la película.

When I was a child, I saw Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and I didn't like it. It had to come beloved Tim Burton to make me love the story, but specially the wonderful world their characters always live in. In this case I was delighted with the grandparents and the Oompa-Loompas, who sang a silly and happy song after a very cruel or kinda perverse moment... Wow.
Todos dicen que Willy Wonka se parece a Michael Jackson y no están nada equivocados, los dos viven aislados en un mundo de fantasía que ellos mismos se crearon, están traumados por tener un padre ojete y a los dos se les ocurre meter a niños en su casa para despues sacarlos todos adoloridos y deshechos. Nada más que Wonka es la neta y Jackson no (al menos YA no).

Una experiencia sumamente intensa, para bien y para mal. Tragicomedia brasileira

The best bunch of French actresses on a film, a great use of each thing shown on the film (wardrobe, ambientation, dialogues, objects...), g reat french pop songs. A great thriller and very interesting charactes, I just never get tired of this film.

I don't care if I see it until learn the whoe script, good actors, good dialogues (specially the inner thoughts) and it makes me laught (which is hard to do lately). Tal vez la historia no es lo que me hace darle todas las estrellas, sino la gran narración interna de sus protagonistas. Me gustó porque, a diferencia de la mayoría de las comedias gringas, ésta (inglesa) no trata al espectador como un idiota y tiene una buena dosis de ese sentido del humor inglés y quién mejor para encarnarlo que Mr. Hug Grant, además aparece la chidísima Toni Collette en un personaje de pena ajena pero enternecedor, como muchos de sus papeles.

Musicals usually are exessively corny, lacking of witt and the characters are the always-good vs. always-bad stereotype, this film avoids that, is smart, has very good songs, choreography, actors... I love it!

The story of the ugly girl that suddenly has a handsome guy (or more than one) in love of her is veeeeeery used (and Ugly Betty is the proof that it wiil still be) but Bridget shows the credible tools to fall in love of her, the good thing is specially how she expresses and how she sees the world. I can't stop of revisiting this film

At first, I was hating it: the characters were all motherfuckers and dumb, but then they were evolving as well as the plot, and finally I was delitghted, specially with de art design and the photography, just as Jonas's previous video clips.

At the beggining, I was falling sleep, but at the end I was in nirvana. A Beautiful way of discover "Where Is My Mind".

He visto El Castillo Vagabundo y El viaje de Chihiro y la Princesa Mononoke me ha gustado mucho más. Desde luego tiene muchos rasgos muy típicos de las tres: muuucha mezcla del mundo real, casi histórico con la fantasía, protagónicos de moral y bondad firmes que se mueven con personajes ambiguos que pasan de villanos a héroes y visceversa y una perfección visual increíble. Me comentaron que el trasfondo ecológico de la película sirvió de inspiración para el capítulo final de Fantasía y algunas cosas tambén para Mulan, pero Disney y Miyazaki son cosas eternamente diferentes.

Preciousist photography, excellent use of the music (marvellous soundtrack) many of my favourite actors brought toghether and a maybe not too realistic approach to glam era but a very funny and stunning world created from the imaginary Bowie-Pop relationship.
Ya la había visto y no me había gustado tanto, pero siempre sentí esa urgencia de volverla a ver. Ahora es de mis consentidas, es como si cada una de las cosas que aparecen fueran extraídas de mi cerebro y creadas para mi deleite exclusivo.

The first film of Wes Anderson and the last I saw. From the 5 films I saw this weekend this the one I like the most (and I saw some very good ones) On this film the story is focused on three characters, the principal one is the typicall boy no one can't stand, but on this film I adore him. The chemical between the three of them is very good (although they hate among them sometimes) and (what I like a lot on Anderson's films) the little details are the great things of the story. I think it's the film in which the relationship between characters was the best on Anderson's films.
Wow, me acuerdo que hace casi diez años cuando vi los cortos me dió una hueva impresionante y me cayó gordísimo el personaje de Schwartzman, ahora me encanta, aunque se parezca a Lety Padilla. Es una película para los que nos gustan las ñoñadas, la música anticuada (todo lo anticuado en realidad) y la magia de los detalles, y no creí que me gustara más que la de los Tenembaums.

The dialogs, the way they recreate the 70's and the 80's with the music, the whole cast, the houses, the cars, the characters, the crimes, the sex scenes, the hairstyles, the songs that Diggler sings (lol) everything of this film makes me have a very good time.

A story of surprises. The fist part of the film is a falsehood, and some others are the ones that make this film famous. But surprises aren't the things that make this film great. The vision of a good man. That's what I think about when the Crying Game comes to my mind.
Cuando la vi me sorprendío. No pensé que una historia de terroristas fuera tan tierna y emocional. Yo era muy joven y ahora que la vuelvo a ver me sigue llegando como en aquél entonces.

A very good beginning, a very good cast, a very good way of looking at the song "LIke a Virgin". The story is simple and yet it passed to me quickly and entertainly

My first encounter with Almodovar. I saw it late night on tv and I remember I felt like if I discoverd something important and new, it brought me from Disney to another kind of films. It's certainly not a mature and philosophical story, it's just a comedy (a women comedy, indeed) but I really got connected with all the characters. It is also one of the films I've seen the most, although I haven't since a long time.

Antes de saber que existía una película con los ingredientes de "Secretaria Ejecutiva" ya estaba buscándola: ambientada en los ochenta con los copetazos de spray, música de pointer sisters, yuppies que ven porno en sus limusinas y un estilo de la moda neoyorquino previo a Sex and the City tan sutil como una mujer desnuda en tacones aspirando el lujoso departamento victoriano. La película toma la demasiado choteada historia de la cenicienta pero contado de una forma muy divertida y con una buena dosis de emoción. Yo siempre pensé que Melanie Griffith era fea y mala actriz hasta que la vi en este simpático papel. El resto del elenco (incluídos varios extras) pronto se convertirían en las estrellas de hoy y hace unos cuantos ayeres. "Secretaria Ejecutiva" me pareció la versión girlie de Wall Street, aunque claro, mucho más desenfadada, ligera y por lo tanto menos tomada en serio. Tal vez sea de esas películas que envejecen, pero me gusta precisamente porque retrata mucho del estilo de vida de aquella época.

Iit's the ganster's cult film, but that doesn't mean it has only blood and bullets (although the blood and the bullets in this film are great), the photography made me salivate and the SOUNDTRACK is right now in my mind. Oh, yeah, and Al Pacino and the rest of the cast.

I'm still in shock, it's one of those cases the film is a total world i dive in. I hope I will do a better critic about this film.

Antes de verla pensé que era un melodrama tipo Hallmark, y tal vez, pero en verdad me conmovió la relación padre-hijo, y tal vez se diferencie de un melo marca Hallmark porque no se trata de una historia de bueno vs. mala sino de un ser humano vs. otro, con defectos y virtudes, con amor y desamor, suave como gaviota...

I've already mentioned how annoying are to me war movies. In this case, The almost 3 hour drama The Deer Hunter was again a happy exception. Although it deals with the horror of the war and its secuels, the story dives much more into the life before and after the war instad of the fool glory and heroic dimensions of fighting against other human beings. The Characters are great as much as the way Cimino envolves us into their world just by putting us in the middle of the places they live in, the things they eat and drink, the songs they sing et al. OH, but yes, the last song I really don't find it appropiate (and I know which one is).
El mundo tal cual es me pareció lo que màs me gustó de esta película. Si bien llega a caer en el sentimentalismo y el gastado triángulo amoroso con la novia del mejor amigo, son los detalles los que hacen a sus personajes tan empatibles y la película tan conmovedora... aunque sea de guerra. Eso sí, la escena final no me gustó o no le entendí.

Now this is real genius to make horror films. Totally sensorial, the force of this film lies not as much as in the plot or the actors as in the sound and vision. Argento forgets the way we usually see the light and dive us into a claustrophobic world of bright colors and nightmare's sounds. The characters are drawn as if they were part of a fairytale (is a witche's story) but instead of making the story too unreal or childish, the "who's the murderer" line helps to avoid that unrealistic view (but only a little).
Fue un verdadero placer ver como puede haber creatividad al momento de hacer una película de terror. Los que se fusilan cintas de horror japonesas o se les ocurre hacer cosas "Sè lo que hicieron el verano pasado" deberían de saber lo que es realmente preparar una escena de terror pensando en algo más que gritos y cuchilladas a lo bestia.

All it's songs, the whole castle are praised by me. The only think I dislike it's the final part, the strory starts to vanish and we just see a sweet transvestite playing the fool with other 5 weirdos in baby doll. Cuando la vi tuve una especie de "revelación" jajajaja. Nunca creí que el cine musical podría ser tan anti-cursi e irreverente.

It isn't a realistic movie at all, it's all about fantasy and revolution. The 60's French sense of humor is shown on this film and the sexiness that we aren't used to see on western films can be enjoyed here with the beauty of Bardot and Moreau. I like it for de songs, the black humor and the personality of the girls.
La historia se desarrolla en México y claro que tienen una visión estereotipada de nosotros pero me pareció mucho mejor que la de los westerns gringos, y también hay cosas de la cultura mexicana que se nota que no tienen ni la menor idea, pero bueno, no podía ser perfecta la película.

Curious how innocent sounds the idea this film caused an scandal at the time of its debut, but I can assure it can amaze people from nowadays; the film is timless. I felt Hoffman for a time :,P
Una de las películas de mi vida.

The story, the characters, everything. When I saw It I had one of those special moments in my life. It's a surreal, illogical very simple story but precisely those little things that seem to be irrelevant are those I enjoyed. But attention: many of you may find it boring and too illogical so you may better prefer to watch Batman or one of those kind of stuff.

Tan buena que no me importó que no pasara nada, que todo fuera confuso, que el protagonista sea un mascalzone, que fuera larga... el mundo y los personajes de Fellini siempre tendrá ese encanto y gracia que me apasionarán.

OH! The film lasts almost three hours and it hasn't a real story, it's just like a situation, but I was just amazed of this world Fellini puts us on. These great pictures we see, the outrageous people that appears at the parties, the restaurants, the castles. I definetly regret not to have an equivalent of a film like this nowadays.
La había comprado desde hace un buen pero no me animaba a verla. Sabía que tenía que hacerlo y ahora lo confirmo. Ahora me gustaría estar en una de esas fiestas decadentes con esos seres de cuento que Fellini nos regaló.

This is one of those films that you inmediately dive on them since the first scene. I don't know what to say that hasn't been told yet about it. Although it's an old film, it has some disturbing things I usually don't find on films of that age or earlier, and those disturbing things are what I like haha. Also like in most of the film of that age, some dialogues and performances are too typical, and overacted, but still, Swanson never looks overacted when she performs an actress that overacts (is "overact" well used by me?).
Mientras la veía no lo podía creer, me encantaba, todo me encantaba, hasta los extras me encantan. pero me intriga muchísimo saber cómo le hicieron para hacer de un filme tan negro un musical, tal vez porque es una historia entretenidísima, claro tomando entretenido como algo que no necesariamente hace reír.

One of my favourite films ever. It is just the best way of showing the entertainment business. Great performances, quotes... I never get tired of watching it.

Fuerte, desgarradora pero emotiva, poderosa y hasta divertida de principio a fin. El manejo de los personajes me pareció tan bueno que me cuesta trabajo recordar una película en donde la empatía con los personajes principales sea superior.
Generalmente las películas que he visto sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial son obras Hollywoodenses de nazis vs. judíos. En ésta, la capital de Italia es víctima de esta ocupación y desde luego que se vuelve un juego de malos malos vs. buenos buenos (algo no muy neorrealista a mi parecer) sin embargo la película más que mostrar esta guerra de bien vs. mal se mete más en explicar la naturaleza humana y lo que todos hacemos al estar en situaciones tan difíciles y extremas como la guerra, y esto incluye llantos, risas, bodas, nacimientos y juegos de niños.

I love it because it is deeply emotional. The chemistry between the tramp and the kid is the best i've ever seen between a "father" and a "kid" in movies.
