My Favorite Movies

  maetthu's Rating My Rating
1
Breaking the Waves 1996,  R)
Breaking the Waves
This movie touched me. It's intense, powerful, sensitive and deeply tragic. The acting of Emily Watson is just awesome.
2
Persepolis 2007,  PG-13)
Persepolis
There were not that many movies which touched me in the same way as Persepolis did. It's so unique, charming, personal, tragic but still with a good amount of humor and irony - and the style of the drawings are exceptional. In a time where more and more animated movies are made with computer - such hand-drawn pieces are like a treasure!
3
Love Me If You Dare (Jeux d'enfants) 2003,  R)
Love Me If You Dare (Jeux d'enfants)
I first saw this movie when heavy rain forced me into a cinema - thank you, thunderstorm ;) It's a unique story and style, cute characters and very touching... cannot really explain why I love it, but I just do.
4
Requiem for a Dream 2000,  R)
Requiem for a Dream
This one has one the greatest soundtracks I ever saw (heard) in a movie! The story and the pictures are pretty intense, but the music just grabs you into it...
5
The Land Before Time 1988,  G)
The Land Before Time
Actually it's a simple animated feature - but still so charming and lovely I can hardly watch it without getting really touched over and over again.
6
The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993,  PG)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Totally unique - love it!
7
Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance 1982,  Unrated)
Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance
Quite artistic, just music and images - but both very intense and disturbing. Difficult movie, but worth watching
8
Little Big Man 1970,  PG)
Little Big Man
I love that movie, especially because of the charming character of the old indian tribal chief performed by Chief Dan George. Sometimes funny, sometimes touching... it has some lengthy moments, but all in all: "My heart soars like a hawk." when I watched it.
9
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies) 1988,  Unrated)
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies)
Amazingly heartbreaking, very sad and intense - I doubt this movie will leave someone untouched at all.
10
Spirited Away 2001,  PG)
Spirited Away
Simply amazing! One of the best animated movies I ever saw.
11
Into the Wild 2007,  R)
Into the Wild
Exceptional photography, absolutely stunning landscapes, charming characters (especially, but not only Emile Hirsch in the leading role... for example, I also loved the old Hippie Couple) and a story which takes you by the hand and right into a journey.
12
Mary and Max 2009,  Unrated)
Mary and Max
so sad and dark, yet so charming and with many many lovely and funny details which make you laugh or smile despite the sad story - a true marvel, loved it!
13
Waltz with Bashir 2008,  R)
Waltz with Bashir
powerful and disturbing animated documentary, great style - but not easy to watch
14
Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
Brilliant.
15
Once 2007,  R)
