1
Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002,  R)
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
3 times. that's how many times I've watched this and for an old cynic like me that makes it a remarkable film. A family film it aint but it's definately on my all time top list
2
The Machinist 2003,  R)
The Machinist
If ever a man suffered for his art it's Christian Bale in the Machinist. One of the best and so far under rated actors of his generation and thisis a disturbing but fascinating film it's like watching a car crash in slow mo' as the character unravels in front of you - get it watch it and be prepared to be haunted by it.
3
The Mission 1986,  PG)
The Mission
Even if it's just for the cinematography and the sound track this is a classic. all that and superb acting and a history lesson
4
The Road Home (Wo de fu qin mu qin) 2000,  G)
The Road Home (Wo de fu qin mu qin)
I first watched this about 2 years ago on the back of the crouching tiger... & flying daggers popularity and, personally, I'd rate this as infinitely better than either of those, or any of the subsequent offerings. I'm not ashamed to say it - my eyeballs did "sweat" a bit. It's a beautiful film. Go on treat yourself! Also lookout for " Not one Less"
5
The Last Temptation of Christ 1988,  R)
The Last Temptation of Christ
I've watched this at least 3 times and each time I'm blown away by Willem Dafoes' portrayal of a man terrified by his destiny and haunted by the fight between his human desire and Gods plan and David Bowies understated Pilate was excellent. A sensational film and so true to the book.
Remember the Father Ted type protests of the 70's? (careful now, down with this sort of thing) Why? this portrayed a Man chosen by God but still full of doubt BUT who triumphed over the devil and his temptation in the end. SO what exactly was their protest about?
6
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
I'm a grumpy middle aged cynic so imagine my surprisew when I found myself grinning like a cheshire cat all the way through this sweet little film. Don't expect some deep social commentary just sit back and let it wash over you
7
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower) 2006,  R)
Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower)
Oh Dea,r Oh Dear, Oh Dear, visually stunning but that's it. What happened Zhang Yimou when I think of "The Road home" or "Not One Less" ohw far this shallow offering is from them makes me sad
8
The Passion of the Christ 2004,  R)
The Passion of the Christ
saw this in the cinema when it first came out. It 's the only time I can remmebr that when the house lights came up the entire audience were still sitting there in stunned silence. This film strips away the twee Hollywood blonde blue eyed Christ and gives it to you straight. Whether you're a believer or not you cannot fail to be touched by this movie in some way.

Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)

Scarface 1983,  R)

cutting edge at the time (no pun intended) but watched it again in '07 and the annoying synth music really dates it, as well as the styles

51
The Lord of the Rings 1978,  PG)
The Lord of the Rings
couldn't make my mind up about this back in the day and since then the Peter Jackson movies have supeseded it. Pity because it is a strange mix of live action and animation - interesting.

All Quiet on the Western Front 1930,  Unrated)
60
Little Shop of Horrors 1986,  PG-13)
61
No Country for Old Men 2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
excellent movie, but a tad overhyped methinks. The ending left me bewildered in its suddenness
62
This Is England 2006,  Unrated)
This Is England
great, gritty British movie but it seemed to pull back a bit as the movie went on. I got the feeling Shane Meadows wanted to do more but there'sa trade of bewtween the art and commercialism
63
Straightheads (Closure) 2007,  R)
Straightheads (Closure)
OMG if you're after a Gillian Anderson good girl type performance start running now. This is a seriously disturbing film but a fascinating insight into revenge and closure. Not one to watch with grannie on a Sunday afternoon
64
The Kingdom 2007,  R)
The Kingdom
Aye, okay worth watching for a typical "goodies shoot really good and baddies couldn't hit an elephant if they were holding it's tail", type movie. Don't expect any deep insight into the middle east.
65
Kingdom of Heaven 2005,  R)
Kingdom of Heaven
forget the history, forget that OB looks like a wee boy playing at knights and it'll get you. I hate myself for it but I've watched it twicew and know I'll go back to it again
66
Cloverfield 2008,  PG-13)
Cloverfield
don't bother its 1hr 24 mins of your life you'll not get back!
67
Atonement 2007,  R)
Atonement
Superb - I'd never read the book so the ending was a complete surprise to me - I know, I should have seen it coming. Superbly acted in that clipped 30's stylee. But for all their brilliance it was Vanessa REdgrave that made the film for me, in that short 5 minutes she held you in her thrall - absolutely brilliant. Why isn't she getting the accolades in this film?
68
Nine Queens (Nueve reinas) 2001,  R)
69
Amores Perros 2000,  R)
70

Blood Diamond 2006,  R)
Blood Diamond
I've avoided Leonardo's films for a while now - I've not been convinced, but not anymore this was fantastic. Dodgy plot line but LDC acted his socks off in this
73
Cronos 1993,  R)
74
The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo del diablo) 2000,  R)
The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo del diablo)
very creepy and fascinating - freaked me out but I couldn't stop watching. This and Pans Labyrinth top the list from Del Torro - not so sure about Cronos
75
300 2007,  R)
300
no holes barred - blood and guts violent, gratuitous - you gotta love it and there's something about a Scottish accent (I'm Scottish by the way) that lends itself to violence and effectivbe taunting of the enemy - if anything bugged me it's the inevitable Agincourt speach that comes at the end of all these modern epics - that and the narrators seriously dodgy accent - what was that?
76
The Last King of Scotland 2006,  R)
The Last King of Scotland
I was a young boy in the mid 70's so remember vaugely the stories reported after the fall of Amins regime. This really took me back to that time, Forest Whitaker was astounding as Amin but can anyoe tell me what Gillian Anderson was doing in this movie?
77
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys) 1995,  R)
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)
needed to watych this one twice before I got it - dense I know - but it's a corker
78
Hotel Rwanda 2004,  PG-13)
Hotel Rwanda
moving, thought provoking, stunning, I watched it open mouthed. Don Cheadle was superb
79
Ray 2004,  PG-13)
Ray
I already loved the music but this was an excellent portrayal by Jamie Foxx I had to keep reminding my self this ISN't really Ray Charles! Obvioulsy skirted around some issues but not by much not really given the hollywood gloss coating at all a real wysiwyg story line
80
Schindler's List 1993,  R)
Schindler's List
This should be compulsory viewing. I've watched this several times and still can't watch it dry eyed
81
Children of Men 2006,  R)
Children of Men
felt a bit dissatisfied at the end of this -not least by the wooden Clive Owen - haven't read the book but I felt the story was hacked to fit the budget
82
House of Flying Daggers (Shi mian mai fu) 2004,  PG-13)
House of Flying Daggers (Shi mian mai fu)
better scenery and story than crouching tiger, still too much wire fighting and impossible anti-gravity fighting and like crouching tiger I'll watch oit again and again and again
83
Brazil 1985,  R)
Brazil
quirky, twisting, convoluted, brilliant and you gotta pay attention or you'll lose the place
84
The Seventh Seal ,  Unrated)
85
All Quiet on the Western Front 1979,  Unrated)
All Quiet on the Western Front
excellent adaptation. Loved it although as a child of the 70's it took me sometime to get over John Boy Walton as a German soldier!
86
Monty Python's Life of Brian 1979,  R)
Monty Python's Life of Brian
LoB or Holy grail which is best - who cares - both brilliant in their own right
87
Hannibal Rising 2007,  R)
Hannibal Rising
I avoided it for a while thinking it was a cynical cash in on the previous movies but I was pleasantly surprised this is a well thought out and constructed story of how Hannibal became the sociopathof earlier (later) films
88
Peeping Tom 1960,  Unrated)
Peeping Tom
superb movie - I watched this 47 years after it was first made and it still looked fresh and exciting. A great commentary on how the child is twisted and damaged by the obviously damaged parent
89
Asoka 2001,  R)
Asoka
A fantastic story that should be given the hollywood treatment (I can't believe I said that) but there's no place in such an epic for the obligatory 6 songs and dances.
90
Satanic 2006,  R)
Satanic
seen it all before - all formula stuff - not worth the effort to watch
91
Resident Evil: Extinction 2007,  R)

American Gangster 2007,  R)
American Gangster
superb, well acted, believable characterisations. Excellent
95
Beowulf & Grendel 2005,  R)
Beowulf & Grendel
I watched this just after seeing the 300 and just couldn't get over the fact that Beowulf was Leonidas in animal skins. A Poor adaptation of the legend but watchable -just
96
Beowulf 2007,  PG-13)
Beowulf
No! No! No! No! disappointing rubbish! I can't believe I fell for all the hype
97
The 13th Warrior 1999,  R)
The 13th Warrior
very "Beowulf" in the story line but unlike the recent offerings on that legend this one is actually very good
98
My Name Is Joe (Mein Name ist Joe) 1998,  R)
My Name Is Joe (Mein Name ist Joe)
Brilliant, sad, funny, violent, very violent, utterly watchable
99
Hard Candy 2005,  R)
Hard Candy
Very disturbing on two levels. One from the paedophile undercurrent and two from the cold calculated way the teenager goes about her revenge. Ellen Page is sensational in this. definately worth a watch
100
Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India 2001,  PG)
Lagaan - Once Upon a Time in India
the best Bollywood movie I've seen in a long long time. Actually didn't even mind the obligatory songs

Dead Man's Shoes
Good gritty british film in th same vein as get carter. great!
102
The Last Legion 2007,  PG-13)
The Last Legion
One star only because it wasn't Clive Owen in this and Aishwarya Rai is gorgeous, although she probably regrets this being in her CV now
103
Pathfinder 2007,  R)
Pathfinder
your basic goodies and baddies with a wee bit of mysticism chucked in for good measure. Not one for the deep thinker but at 88 minutes it's not a burden
104
The Last of the Mohicans 1992,  R)
The Last of the Mohicans
Loved this. DDL as usual is excellent in this. superb scenery, excellent sound track.
105
Batman Begins 2005,  PG-13)
Batman Begins
Christian Bale brings new life to a franchise that had frankly seen better days and Michael Caine as a wise cracking Albert is a breath of fresh air. Excellent prequel
106
King Arthur 2004,  PG-13)
King Arthur
interesting take in the legend KK painted blue and screaming for blood was strangely erotic (My pshycologist appointment is tomorrow) but Clive Owen - oh dear- if he gets any more wooden he'll get woodworm!
107
Mr. Brooks 2007,  R)
Mr. Brooks
A wee gem this one. I didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised. I think I'll actually watch it again
108

strangely compelling film with stunning scenery. Don't know why it touched me - not to be analysed just enjoyed
111
Into Great Silence 2005,  Unrated)
Into Great Silence
How can a film of nearly 3 hours with nodialogue worth mentioning keep you watching? No, I don't know either but it does. Fascinating!
112
Stardust 2007,  PG-13)
Stardust
great wee failry tale with an edge and a brilliantly comic cameo from DeNiro. great!
113
Willow 1988,  PG)
Willow
definately not the pinacle of the genre but so watchable . Jean Marsh is fantastically over the top as the evil queen. Worth it just for that alone
114
Solyaris (Solaris) 1976,  PG)
Solyaris (Solaris)
certainly not your typical shooting aliens SciFi offering. Really heavyweight you need to concentrate 100% or, as I did, watch it - wait a few weeks then watch it again and repeat this process until you understand what the hell is going on! I have absolutely no idea why I like this but I do
115
Solaris 2002,  PG-13)
116
There Will Be Blood 2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
okay, it was an alright film but a bit too long to be carried by the school of "no dialogue but scary look" I'm probably out of step with the rest of the world (no change there) but if DDL had put a stove pipe hat on I'd have thought I was watching Gangs of New York. There was nothing new or refreshing or outstanding about it - same flamin' character in a different location!
117
Delicatessen 1991,  R)
Delicatessen
what can I say? it's beyond description - just watch it you're either going to love it (as I do) or hate it within 5 minutes if it's the latter give it another 10 minutes it'll be wotrth it for the bouncy bed scene(and that's NOT a spoiler)
118
Small Faces 1995,  R)
Small Faces
if you subscribe to a DVD rental club get this one in your list as a classic gritty brit flick
119

120
Girl on the Bridge (La Fille sur le Pont) 1999,  R)
Girl on the Bridge (La Fille sur le Pont)
quirky love story between an ageing knife thrower and a suicidal girl. Who really needs who in the relationship? watch and find out - Vanessa Paradis proving she's more than just a pretty face
121
Manon des Sources (Manon of the Spring) (Jean de Florette II ) 1986,  PG)
Manon des Sources (Manon of the Spring) (Jean de Florette II )
exquisite conbtinuation of the Jean de Florette story spiralling to a wonderful conclusion The superb acting from Yves Montand when the truth is finally relvealed to him still captivated and touches you. That and the haunting theme, superb scenery and strong cast make this and it's predecessor the two best French movies of recent times
122
Jean De Florette 1986,  PG)
Jean De Florette
watch it along with the sequel, Manon des Source, and it's a seamless beautiful, tragic story of greed, lust, desperation and revenge. wonderfully acted. Perfection.
123
The Closet (Le Placard) 2001,  R)
The Closet (Le Placard)
hilarious French comedy. Daniel Auteuil is excelent in his awkwardness but Gerard depardieu's awkwardness moving from gruff non PC to gay activist is side splittingly funny
124
The Dinner Game (Le Dîner de cons) 1998,  PG-13)
The Dinner Game (Le Dîner de cons)
excellent french comdey farce - elements of la cage au folle and English farce. Loved every moment of it
125
36 quai des orfevres 2004,  Unrated)
36 quai des orfevres
good solid well acted cop drama thriller but not setting the heather alight - just good and watchable
126
Queen Margot (La Reine Margot) 1994,  R)
127
Le Bossu (On Guard) 1997,  Unrated)
Le Bossu (On Guard)
Fantastic, swashbuckling , intruige and treachery abound in this superb offering - infinately better than any of the three musketeers films or of the dire pirates of the caribean franchise. This is how this genre should be portrayed although the relationship between Lagarder and his ward is a bit dodgy.
128
He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not (À la folie... pas du tout) 2002,  PG-13)
He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not (À la folie... pas du tout)
If you loved Audrey Tatou in Amelie prepare for a shock. This starts as a silly French love story but it slowly turns very dark indeed, in fact so slowly you actually believe what's happening is quite reasonable...then you realise how dark the story is.
A.T. certainly shakes off the Amelie image in this one right to the very last frame it's a gripper. I defy anyone not to be screaming NO! Look behind it!at the end
129
Rambo (Rambo IV) 2008,  R)
Rambo (Rambo IV)
Yes I watched this and no I wouldn't recommend it. The scenes of violence, which incidentally are the entire damn movie, are extremely graphic and leave absolutely nothing to the imagination - gratuitous and sickeningly graphic with a piss poor storyline - one for a beer and curry night for the lads. Definately not for a romantic trip to the movies!
130
Cry, the Beloved Country 1995,  PG-13)
Cry, the Beloved Country
Excellent version - faithfull to the book in the simple understated dialogue. Superbly acted by both principals. Heart wrenching, touching. If you fail to shed a single tear your must be heartless!
131
The Spiderwick Chronicles 2008,  PG)
The Spiderwick Chronicles
an okay kids film - a lot more could have been done with this wrt CGI and creature effects but a good kids holiday film none the less
132
The Lives of Others 2006,  R)
The Lives of Others
slow brooding atmospheric, oppresive, all not very encouraging adjectives but they state the feeling that this excellent film tried and succeeded in portraying about life in GDR under the eye of the Stasi. Breat acting of a clever story of betrayal, politics, back stabbing and ulimate forgiveness.
133
The Mist 2007,  R)
The Mist
A good adaptation of the Stephen King story captured the oppressive isolating atmosphere brilliantly - ending changed from the story I remember reading but for a change the movie ending was better and really really unfortunate and will leave the viewer with an uncomfortable feeling for ages.
134
Das Boot (The Boat) 1981,  R)
Das Boot (The Boat)
tense, oppresive, claustophobic and ultimately tragic. I'm not selling this am I? well ignore me - Watch this it's the seminal submarine war movie. Not the shortest movie ever made but the time addds to the drama and atmosphere.
135
M 1931,  Unrated)
M
AMAZING! it's more than 70 years old and is one the best if not the benchmark for all psychological thrillers since. Yes the Nazi political undertone is omnipresent in the movie but ignoring this, the lesson applies to any and all society and is timeless. Possibly the only other film of this period that can stand up to this is "All quiet on the Western Front"
136
The Message 1976,  PG)
The Message
Great movie, brilliantly acted by the cast headed by Anthony Quinn to ensure Islamic law was observed and preserved. No flowering up of the story or the usual "hollywood" embelishements. Just the facts. An interesting and informative, as well as entertaining, insight into the birth of Islam. Forget the current religious/political difficulties - this should be aired as often as any of the Christian "Passion" movies. We have more in common than differences!
137
Southland Tales 2006,  R)
Southland Tales
144 minutes of un- parallelled garbage - obviously someone liked this but it certainly wasn't me!I lasted 15 minutes. Why waste your time on this tosh when there's so much really good stuff out there?
138
El Orfanato (The Orphanage) 2007,  R)
El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
Reminiscent of "The Devils Backbone" Creepy, sinister, keeps the goosebump count up all the way to the end, none of the hollywood stuff jumping out at you crap, just an excellent psychological, suspense filled ghost storythat will stay with you for ages after.
139
Riff-Raff 1991,  R)
Riff-Raff
Great British "true life" movie much of the time it has that fly on the wall feel, especially on the building site. Ricky tomlinson and Robert Carlyle were brilliant. It's not a happy happy feel good movie but does shy away from the really gritty issues a bit.
140
Doomsday 2008,  R)
Doomsday
Mad max meets 28 days later with Highlander along for the ride and elements of escape from LA. There's a Doomsday 2 in the offing - I just know it. suspend all requirement for a thought provoking social commentary it's blood, guts and mindless violence from start to finish wit some pretty obvious product placement in the form of the car. I hate myself for it but I'll watch this again!
141
Oldboy 2004,  R)
Oldboy
Loved this - extreme violence aside, this tale of ultimate revenge stretching from school to adulthood has it all. Not one to watch with your granny tho'
142
Ong-Bak (Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior) 2005,  PG-13)
Ong-Bak (Ong Bak: Muay Thai Warrior)
incredible - Ikept replaying to watch the fight scenes and the chase scene - wow! Not exactly the deepst plot around but none of the great martial arts movied did and as for Tony Jaa - what a fighter!
143
Hancock 2008,  PG-13)
Hancock
okay well it starts well funny, taking the p out the super hero genre and I thought "nice one" but the spectre of holywood is never far away and before you know it it's a damned love story spanning eons and it's setting up a sequel... Damn!
