beautiful and very moving, maybe slightly too short but anything else may have been padding. The best shot film I've seen so far this year, and probably the best African one I've ever seen (probably the only one though)

Cry Wolf
Very tight little mystery film, great soundtrack, well paced, and it's got Jared Padalecki from Supernatural in it.

Gary Cole was a weird choice to play the dad, they could have just hired an English actor, but his accent is fine. And Jon Bovi has surprised me in the roles I've seen him in so far.

Was going to rate it slightly lower until the last 10 minutes or so. I think the fact that I expected a straight horror film (didn't know jack about it) may have helped the enjoyment. Oh, and the fact that its full of cute schoolgirls in short skirts never hurts...

Great great film film. Kind of like noir's answer to 'The Man Who Knew Too Little', though not a straight out comedy. I love noirs so I'll take anything new coming my way, and if this became some form of franchise I'd be a happy man.
35
Crossroads 1986,  R)
Crossroads
If you like the blues you'll love this film. Some fantastic tunes in this, wrapped around a hell of a film. The guitar battle at the end has to be to heard to be believed (plus it's the Karate Kid vs the Wyld Stalyons, top that!)

Weird Al is the king of parody songs, and this film is full of TV and film parodies (a couple of subtle ones you might not even notice) and crazy humour. Michael Richards plays Kramer on acid and who couldn't love that? Fantastic film that's a satire AND a love story to TV.

I'm gonna miss these guys. It's sad that this is the swan song for the Askewniverse. But I know Smith will go on to equally great things

I think this is probably a guy flick, especially the scene towards the end in jail. Dealing with strong emotions for another dude isn't always easy and I found this scene very poiniant to my own life. Miss ya Andy, you cock smoker.
42
Flushed Away 2006,  PG)
Flushed Away
Hilarious. Aardman might have swapped plastacine for pixels but its hasn't damaged there story telling abilities. Had me laughing all the way though. Has a few misses her and there, but what film doesn't (and they don't detract in the least)?
43
The Flying Car 2002,  Unrated)
44
Little Miss Sunshine 2006,  R)
Little Miss Sunshine
This is the kind of film that RV really should have been...

When I first heard about Little Miss Sunshine I wasn't interested. Children's beauty pagents disgust me. Their f*cked up peado fests where parents turn there kids in to twisted little dolls dressed up like adults instead of kids. The trailer changed my mind somewhat and the film actually agrees with me on my point, which is nice.

It's a disfunctional family piece, quirky, funny and charming. steve Carell gets a chance to act instead of just doing schtick, and it turns out he's great at both. Abigail Breslin is a great little actress and she's rediculously cute.

This is Jersey Girls even more twisted little cousin. Great stuff.
45
Children of Men 2006,  R)
Children of Men
Harsh, brutal, extremely well made and not all that far fetched. Well, humanity becoming infertile maybe but there's adverts on the radio NOW about hiring illegal immigrants. Good old EU...

Anyway, some of the cinematography in this is just STUNNING. The one continuous shot about 25 minutes in to the movie....I can't work out how they did it. Gonna have to buy the DVD just to find that out.

Michael Caine is fantastic in this, as is the rest of the cast. The futuristic tech is subtle and plausable, never thrown in your face and only a few steps ahead of what we have now as would be expected. this is shocking, brutal and heartwarming stuff.
46
United 93 2006,  R)
United 93
Extremely well made mokumentary. Very realistic, my stomach was in knots for the last third. If I'm half as heroic in the position that the passengers were, I'd be proud.
47
Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
Pan's Labyrinth
An absolutely beautiful film. The type of story reminds me of the kind of fantasy films that Hollyweird was putting out in the 80's, but it also has a lot of the real Grimm fairy tales in it. They were harsh and pretty nasty, not the disneyfied version most people are familiar with.

The ending is a bit ambigous though. Don't expect what you think is going to happen. I nearly knocked a half star off for it but decided not too. Also in the last chunk there is quite a break from the fantasy element and a lot of the real world. this almost lasts too long, but its kind of unavoidable for plot and story reasons.

Oh, and this cost roughly what the catering budget would be on a crappy mainstream movie, for example Eragon, and looks, sounds and is acted better than 90% of them. Del Toro = genius.
48
Apocalypto 2006,  R)
Apocalypto
They say there's a fine line between insanity and genius, and we all know that Mel Gibson is a nut job...

Fantastic films that at its heart has a simple story with extraordinary surroundings. Mel being a born again christian means I dreaded this beliteling the religion and culture, but it doesn't. The whole sacrafice thing is pretty crazy anyway but he didn't make a meal of it. There's a lot of theories as to what happened to the Mayans. This film seems to go for the "whiped out by a plague" one that makes sense. Excelent film, brilliantly performed.
49
Flags of Our Fathers 2006,  R)
Flags of Our Fathers
Fantastic war film. when you see some of the stuff that Clint Eastwood has directed it makes it kind of sad he acted so long cause he's amazing at this.

Good actor too mind you

Looking forward to seeing the flip side from the Japanese perspective
50
The Prestige 2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
Great mystery film that leaves you guessing to the end. Well almost, all the clues are there and I saw what was coming before it arrived some of the time, but the prestige of the film is as good as the tricks.

An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder 2006,  Unrated)
An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder
Its just Kevin Smith talking shit, your not gonna watch this if you aren't already a fan of the guy. Though you should, as he's an entertaining fucker...
52
TMNT 2007,  PG)
TMNT
FANTASTIC! I really didn't expect much from this going in, but its very much a 5 star movie. Good action, very grown up plot, pretty dark and some amazing CGI. Drags a bit in parts but a very good movie. T U R T L E power! Oh, the rap over the end credits sucks though
53
Chicken Little 2005,  G)
54
Serenity 2005,  PG-13)
Serenity
Fantastic film, shame it doesn't look like there'll be sequels due to it not pulling in enough scratch. Firefly was badly treated and shouldn't have been cancelled in the first place. The rich universe became richer and I don't know anyone who's see Serenity and had anything bad to say. Not often a film has 100% approval...

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1984,  PG)

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 2005,  PG-13)

Knocked Up 2007,  R)
Knocked Up
For the first while I was a bit worried I wasn't really going to like this film. The friends are a bit TOO stonery, and it wasn't hugely funny to me. This changed a lot though, and it ended up being a very real portrayal of a couple of people in a crazy situation. It's funny, everyone is a realistic character and by the end you feel like you've known them for a lot longer than two hours. While the women are a little more insane than seemed real to me in the middle (more the sister really, who over reacts in my opinion) and the friends remain a little shy of likeable for me, it's a damned fine movie. Mainly down to the chemistry between Rudd and Rogen, I think I could watch those guys in anything.

And you WILL believe that Katherine Heigl would let Seth Rogen bone her. Great special effects there.
58
Pretty Persuasion 2005,  R)
Pretty Persuasion
A black comedy with some dark, dark blacks. Great performances, with the standouts being Evan Rachel Wood and James Woods. Must be something about that surname...
59
Eastern Promises 2007,  R)
Eastern Promises
Too short if anything, in need of a sequel. Also should have finished with them walking away (the motorbike shot, 2 scenes from the end. Though the last shot of Viggo is good).

That said, damned fine gangster movie.
60
Away from Her 2006,  PG-13)
Away from Her
You know how heart breaking the last couple of minutes of The Notebook are? This is that, but for an hour and a half. Beautiful and wrenching at the same time. I have no idea how I'd handle the situation that Gordon Pinsent finds himself in, and hopefully I'll never have to find out.

My mum works in what is essentially the second floor btw. Can't visit the place, it's not nice...
61
Green Street Hooligans 2005,  R)
Green Street Hooligans
Great stuff. I didn't expect to like this movie. I hate football and I really hate hooligans, but the characters in this are largely likeable and no one not involved in the firms seems to be caught up in fights really.

Elijah Wood was surprisingly fitting for this, mainly because the character development is well handled. The one down point acting wise is Charlie Hunnam's accent. To foreigners he might just sound English, but it floats about quite a bit and can be a bit distracting. Elijah could have toughened his voice up a bit for the later scenes too as he still sounds like he's waiting for his stones to drop. That's what costs this the last half star, because otherwise it was some great cinema.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape 1993,  PG-13)
63
Eddie Murphy Delirious 1983,  Unrated)
64
Juno 2007,  PG-13)
Juno
Fantastic script, stellar cast and a simple filming method. This is the kind of movie that I love (although generally with less plot). Jennifer Garner was a bit of a weak point really, but partly I think that was down to her character being the weakest scripted.

The other down point is that I didn't get some of the slang used. But that's probably down to me being an old fart. We're talking a couple of words here though so nothing that really detracts. Check it out! Thundercats are GO!
65
Stand by Me 1986,  R)
66
Pride and Prejudice 2005,  PG)
Pride and Prejudice
Brilliant stuff. A fantastic performance by Knightly. Actually, by everyone really (though the youngest Bennet's are a pain in the arse. I believe that's meant to be though).

Sure, this is essentially the stuff of a million Mills and Boon books, but when its this well written and acted who cares?
67
What About Bob? 1991,  PG)
What About Bob?
Classic Bill Murray 80's comedy (sure it was released in 91, but don't split hairs) with a great supporting cast.
68
Chocolat 2000,  PG-13)
69
V for Vendetta 2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
Loses half a star for two reasons. 1) Alan Moore didn't want his name on it, which I assume means its not faithful to the source material, and I can't defy the Wizard of Britain. And 2) Natalie Portman's shitty accent

Outside of these issues it's a fantastic film. Hugo Weaving turns in a stellar performance, as do Stephen Fry, John Hurt and all the rest. portman's acting wasn't bad, but work on the accent a bit more next time...
70
Kramer vs. Kramer 1979,  PG)
Kramer vs. Kramer
Sweet and harrowing drama. Dustin Hoffman is brilliant in this, as is little Justin Henry as his son. The film also highlights a pretty big injustice that still goes on today, which I won't detail in case I completely spoil it (should be pretty obvious though).

I think Streep's characters story should have been told somewhere too as we can't really develop any sympathy for her. She's essentially batshit crazy. It might be because I'm a guy, but I didn't even slightly side with her
71
Training Day 2001,  R)
72
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope 1977,  PG)
73
Pleasantville 1998,  PG-13)
Pleasantville
Great stuff. A smart comedy with plenty of messages. Could probably analyse the hell out of it, but where's the fun in that?
74
Friday Night Lights 2004,  PG-13)
Friday Night Lights
Perfect

Okay, maybe not. But still a damned fine football film. I still prefer Varsity Blues though (that's a ten, a fuckin ten!). Not for people who aren't ready for some football, but even looking past the game there's some great performances and real drama here.
75
Varsity Blues 1999,  R)
76
Surf's Up 2007,  PG)
Surf's Up
I don't get what the obsession with penguins is (or was), can't make an animated movie without them all of a sudden...

Anyway, I expected to hate this but it's really good. Lots of little easter eggy bits of humour, the chicks are cute and funny, and the style is kind of like Creature Comforts at times. In addition to being pretty bored with all the penguins I'm not a fan of surfing at all. Surfing docs put me to sleep. Not in this case though. Some damn fine voice acting too, though the cast were in the studio together so that no doubt helped (I'm a voice actor and know how tough it is when you can't here the others)
77
Me and You and Everyone We Know 2004,  R)
Me and You and Everyone We Know
Weird and brilliant slice of life movie with some very strange characters. Kind of made me feel a bit stoned by the end...
78
Saved! 2003,  PG-13)
Saved!
Mmm, that's good blasphemy!

Kind of a Christian Mean Girls really. And it's only blasphemous if your one of the crazy nut jobs. Mac is awesome in this, as ever. Under rated guy.
79
Iron Man 2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
A little slow, but it's still a great movie. Robert Downey Jr was perfectly cast in this and there's plenty of little touches for the fans

With the origin stuff out of the way the second one could be a thing of beauty
80
Whale Rider 2002,  PG-13)
Whale Rider
Fantastic film with a very strong central performance by Keisha about a culture I knew little about. Great stuff
81
Stargate: The Ark of Truth 2008,  Unrated)
82
No End in Sight 2007,  Unrated)
No End in Sight
A very important bit of history laid down on tape for the archives. The sad thing is that we came so close to doing this right, but the wrong people were in charge. And those people are too scared to talk about it
83
Kiss of the Dragon 2001,  R)
Kiss of the Dragon
Great martial arts flick. Can't go wrong if you cast Burt Kwouk and there's some damned fine action for Jet Li. Worth the price of admission just for him fighting Cyril Raffaelli, one of the creators of Parkour (the short blonde twin in this)
84
St. Elmo's Fire 1985,  PG-13)
St. Elmo's Fire
I wish they still made brat pack movies...

Great slice of life, great performances, very 80's.
85
No Man's Land 2001,  R)
No Man's Land
A very dark comedy really, though it has strong drama elements. However you slice it this film is full of great performances and has some strong messages
86
The Boondock Saints 2000,  R)
The Boondock Saints
Great stuff. Sign me up
87
Peter Pan 2003,  PG)
Peter Pan
I love the story of Peter Pan, and this is a great version but it has a few flaws. Loses a half star for those, partly because he never crows...
88
Some Kind of Wonderful 1987,  PG-13)
Some Kind of Wonderful
Hey it's Hughes. 80's Hughes. Can't go wrong with that

Except it's too short.
89
I Am Sam 2001,  PG-13)
I Am Sam
Great film packed with brilliant actors. When I went in I wasn't particularly expecting anything great. It's another oscar bait movie with an actor being retarded, but I was pleasently surprised.
90
Blues Brothers 2000 1998,  PG-13)
Blues Brothers 2000
So it's not the original, little is. And I was worried to watch this because of the bad press. But I for one am glad they got the band back together.

Nearly a remake, plays plenty of homage to Joliet Jake, and a bit weirder than the first. This is still wall to wall great music.
91
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
No movie should be able to be this good. Just awesome from start to finish with wall to wall great performances. Yes, the Batman voice is a bit silly but it make sense and that was one thing that annoyed me with the Spider-Man films (how did Aunt May not recognise his voice?).

Batman is a TRUE hero in this film, not a poser looking for credit. And he has true villains. Two Face is brilliant, but the Joker is amazing and it's a damned shame he won't be able to return for future movies. Amazingly creative and brilliantly characterised by Ledger. Just for the art though, if another actor can pull it off I could live with him coming back. The show must go on after all
92
Frost/Nixon 2008,  R)
Frost/Nixon
Very powerful performances by Langella and Sheen. I never thought I'd feel sympathy for Nixon! Strong supporting cast as well. Has made me want to hunt out the original interviews (won't take much hunting as they're on DVD). Brilliant stuff
93
Up 2009,  PG)
94
The Hurt Locker 2008,  R)
The Hurt Locker
Just fantastic. Essentially a character piece war movie. Not that that's a new thing. In equal parts funny, moving and tense. If you liked Jeremy Renner in The Unusuals he's the army dude version of that character here, and everyone is great. The "Full Metal Jacket" vibe is strong with this one
95
The Princess and the Frog 2009,  G)
The Princess and the Frog
Fantastic! The animation is beautiful and nostalgic, the voice acting and script is funny, moving and the right level of scary for kids. Disney at its finest
