A strange and original yarn that makes you think. One of my favorites.
4
The Wrestler 2008,  R)
The Wrestler
Modern-day filmmaking at its finest. I can't recall the last time an actor poured his heart into a performance like Rourke has done. It had a wonderful original song too.
5
The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
Absolutely amazing. The best performances of Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins.
6

The most original, surreal, and disturbing piece of film I've ever seen.

Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb 1964,  PG)
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
It deserves to be one of Kubrick's most admired pictures. Comedy like this is a type I really appreciate.
8
The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
This is one of the best contemporary American classics out there. Robbins and Freeman give the performances of their careers. Darabont wrote and directed the hell out of this movie, which will stand the test of time.
9
Stand by Me 1986,  R)
Stand by Me
No other film captures friendship, self-discovery, and the journey to maturity better than Stand By Me. All the actors showed so much potential by developing the well-rounded characters within this fantastic story.
10
Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
Inglourious Basterds was an absolutely amazing experience. I don't want to say too much about it, because part of the movie's magic is seeing it with as little knowledge of the picture as possible. All I'll say is that I was extremely pleased with just about every aspect of the film.
11
Magnolia 1999,  R)
Magnolia
Magnolia was phenomenal. It's three hours long, yet it feels like two. Great storylines, fine acting, and unexpected twists render this movie impossible to forget. I'd enjoy watching Magnolia again with a large group of fellow film enthusiasts, who have also seen it once already. That way, we can really dig beneath the surface.
12
Kill Bill: Volume 1 2003,  R)
Kill Bill: Volume 1
A good one filled with Tarantino's unique wit, ingenuity, and gore.
13
Kill Bill, Volume 2 2004,  R)
Kill Bill, Volume 2
A good one filled with Tarantino's unique wit, ingenuity, and gore.
14
Million Dollar Baby 2004,  PG-13)

A great boxing movie that's more than just a boxing movie. Both well-written and well-acted.
15
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

A freaking awesome movie that every man needs to see.
17
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
I'm not a big fan of superhero movies, but Heath Ledger was mesmerizing.
18
Amadeus 1984,  PG)
Amadeus
I was impressed with Abraham's fantastic performance. It's lengthy, but it doesn't feel as long as it actually is due to the film's excellent flow.
19
The Exorcist 1973,  R)
The Exorcist
Hands down one of the greatest horror movies ever made. The book is good too.
20
Let the Right One In 2008,  R)
Let the Right One In
Let The Right One In impressed me. Just about every aspect of this film was top-notch. It was definitely not the typical vampire drivel. I'm usually not a fan of child actors, but these ones were not bad at all.
21
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot) 2002,  R)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot)
Hardcore. Very well done. The writing, directing, and acting were all spot on. I didn't expect it to be so layered, which I liked.
22
The Prestige 2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
Almost everything about this movie is perfect. This is definitely one of the best movies in recent years.
23
Elephant 2003,  R)
Elephant
I never stopped wondering what would happen next. The ending left me hanging, but the movie kept it real in a very dark and terrifying way.
24
Mildred Pierce 1945,  Unrated)
Mildred Pierce
It beat my expectations, which is sometimes difficult. I loved Crawford and Blyth, who was such a wicked little tart.
25
Touch of Evil 1958,  PG-13)
Touch of Evil
One great example of noir. I loved Dietrich, as always. Even Welles grew on me.
26
The Stranger 1946,  Unrated)
The Stranger
This was an excellent movie. I was actually in suspense during the climax, which doesn't happen too often.
27
Diabolique (Les Diaboliques) 1954,  Unrated)
Diabolique (Les Diaboliques)
Ahead of its time. It kept me wondering what would happen next. The ending made me think afterward, which is always a good thing.
28
Suddenly, Last Summer 1960,  Unrated)
Suddenly, Last Summer
Hepburn, Taylor, and Clift were great. It moved incredibly fast. When it ended, I begged for more.
29
Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991,  R)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Far better than the first one.
30
Casablanca 1942,  PG)
Casablanca
Flawless, no. But it's chockfull of fantastic quotes and one of the most rightly executed endings in history.
31
Chicago 2002,  PG-13)
Chicago
One of the best musicals ever made.
32
Fargo 1996,  R)
Fargo
What a great film from the Coens. There's little that could've been done to make it better, but there was something missing.
33
Back to the Future 1985,  PG)
Back to the Future
Classic 1980s comedy. There's nothing else like it.
34
The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993,  PG)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Probably the best children's movie ever made. It can be very easily liked by adults too.
35
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) 2003,  PG-13)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long)
Excellent writting, acting, and directing in a movie that kicks butt!

Edward Scissorhands 1990,  PG-13)
Edward Scissorhands
A sweet and well-executed movie featuring a powerful cast.
37
Sophie's Choice 1982,  R)
Sophie's Choice
Streep, Kline, and MacNicol were all wonderful. The movie was exceptionally well made and written. It's only fault lies within the length, but that didn't kill the film.
38
Rocky 1976,  PG)
Rocky
A classic underdog tale that's as good today as ever.
39
La Haine (Hate) 1995,  R)
La Haine (Hate)
Easily the best French film I've ever seen. I loved the camerawork. And the ending was breathtaking.
40
No Country for Old Men 2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
Extremely well-written, acted, and directed. But it didn't quite reach my expectations.
41
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso) 1988,  R)
Cinema Paradiso (Nuovo Cinema Paradiso)
I loved every issue this movie tackled and how it tackled them. The ending was very well-done. It beautifully added to the film's overall theme. My only beef is the length, but I saw the Director's Cut, of course.
42
Rashômon (Rashomon) (In the Woods) 1951,  Unrated)
Rashômon (Rashomon) (In the Woods)
Going into Rashomon, I didn't know what to expect. The only other Kurosawa film I had seen was Throne of Blood. Considering its time, Rashomon was an exceptionally well made film. It surpassed my expectations by a fair amount. It impressively exemplified human nature, the different definitions of truth, and how justice is dealt. However, I'll need to watch it a second time to truly appreciate it.
43
Bad Education (La Mala educación) 2004,  NC-17)
Bad Education (La Mala educación)
This is marks the first time I saw a film by Pedro Almodovar. It's an absolutely amazing movie. I had no idea going into it how much I would like it, or if I would like it at all. I don't even know how to articulate how much I enjoyed it. Gael Garcia Bernal is fantastic. I would recommend this to anyone, especially if they love Spanish films.
