Shawshank is one of the best films ever made.. Crisp acting and full of endless tension, sometimes oppressive and full of fear. Every situation and character are so intricately woven, there is no wasted celluloid here. Every aspect of the film, from acting, directing, and all factors that make up a masterpiece are in top form. It is a true testament to the spirit of man and how each one handles what life throws at us in our own way. If ever you feel down, give it a watch and it's hard not to be inspired.
Classic. Whoever doesn't appreciate this film's cinematic excellence and utter coolness, must definitely see it again, very very carefully this time. Everything about Pulp Fiction has been said, so I'll use this space just to pay my respects to everyone involved.
Terrific film. Everything from dialogue to score was perfect. I first watched the director's cut, and then bought it immediately. Now after seeing the film for about the 7th time, I finally saw the theatrical version, which is a lot more confusing in my opinion. If you are a first time indy watcher, the extended cut is for you, but if you think you're ready for a puzzle that will keep you up thinking about it for weeks, then the theatrical version is what I would go for. 6 out of 5
Star Wars is a triumph in filmmaking. It took a small budget, a big idea and made what is still classed as one of the best films ever made. It is timeless and I can watch it over and over and still feel the excitement that I originally felt. If you don't like Star Wars, you probably don't like movies.
From both an artistic and entertainment standpoint, this is by far one of the best films ever made. It lacks big stars, big budget, and big effects, but it is so masterfully crafted and the story is so excellently told. The chronology of the story unfolds backwards, and it can be a little disorienting at first, but then the experience completely engages you. This is unlike any film or television show I have ever seen, brilliant
Definitely one of the best. It takes my personal favorite elements of film and storytelling (Depiction of mental deterioration, black humor, interesting and ambiguous philosophical messages to ponder, etc.) The other thing about this movie that is good is that you will want to see it several times. They give you a lot to chew on. What appears to be failed continuity turns out to be foreshadowing, finding all the hints and clues to the big twist, and also watching the movie with knowledge of what is truly happening, and paying more attention to the various subliminal frames that populate the movie.
The original Godfather changed movies forever. I can't say anything about this film that has not already been said. It's a masterpiece with only its second part able to compare to it.
Sideways is one of those rare adult comedies that blends intelligent writing with fantastic performances, all crafted beautifully by a talented director. From the very beginning it's obvious that this film is unlike any other and it remains at this level throughout its entirety. Payne's adaptation is not heavy-handed and he shows mature restraint in the presentation, which is what makes all the difference in intelligent comedy.
The movie really captures the isolation of being in the middle of nowhere and adds a very haunting effect to the film, the setting is very original and perfect for the movie. Many scenes will have characters doing what they do, but with no score which adds a sense of loneliness. But when the score does play it's very impressive, the opening credits music that is played throughout the film really draws you into everything. One of the things I admire about the Ceon Brothers is the way the can mix so many aspects of film making into a genre. For example there is a scene that I found very interesting where Frances McDormand is getting in her car while her husband is eating breakfast. The focuses between the two images, so you have two things to look at in one close framed shot. As usual for The Coens the script really stands out, mixed with humor and memorable phrases.
I believe all of the characters fit their part perfectly.. They talked, interacted, and looked exactly the way I imagined they would.. The violence in this film is also an eye opener to the rest of the world. In the notorious "favelas", it's not uncommon to see children walking openly brandishing a firearm. Even the military and police hesitate to enter these areas as they closely resemble a war zone. Believe what you see in the film, because it is NOT by any means simply an exaggerated fable. These sorts of things happened right where I used to live. Incidentally, despite the violence, the film also showcases Brazil as one of the most beautiful places in the world.
