48	The Lives of Others 2006, R) This and "The Prestige" are proof that great films are still being made. Seems at one point to be edging towards predictability but goes in an unanticipated, yet utterly convincing direction. Also, one of the best closing lines in all of cinema.

50	The Flight of the Phoenix 1965, Unrated) Masterfully drawn characters. A cry for the power of man's intellect.
51	The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath! (Ironiya sudby, ili S legkim parom!) 1975, Unrated) A classic of Soviet cinema. A bit of trivia: the female lead is not Russian but Ukrainian. Her dialogue and singing were dubbed in post. The songs, all Russian poetry set to music, are sublime, and range from heartbreaking to ephemerally joyous.

55	Die Hard 1988, R) There is not a wasted scene, shot, or line of dialogue in the entire film, but it does not seem at all pared down. A masterclass in screenwriting could be taught around just this film.

Peter O'Toole may have been chided for playing another Lawrence (Jim is, however, a dissimilar character with a different destiny), but it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role. Bronislaw Kaper's score is magnificent and altogether fitting with the stirring, nautical overtones of Conrad's tale.
