Blazing Saddles 1974,  R)
Blazing Saddles
My favorite Mel Brooks movie. The ultimate politically incorrect comedy- managing to insult probably everyone.
Story is set in the late 1800s and centers on an incompetent Governor whose right -hand man (Hedley) is scheming to help the railroad industry. He makes devious plans to scare off the entire town of Rock Ridge, clearing the way for a new rail line being built. When the dumb governor hears about pleas for help from the simple townsfolk, Hedley talks him into sending a black sheriff to 'help' the town out. He expects the townspeople to kill him, therefore leaving them vulnerable, but instead is continually thwarted by the coolness and ingenuity of Bart and his new sidekick, Jim, the Waco KId. This movie was co-written by Richard Pryor, the Sheriff Bart character was meant for him. Unfortunately it was not to be, but Cleavon Little does a fabulous job as Bart. Gene Wilder is great as The Waco Kid. Madeline Kahn, Harvey Korman and Slim Pickens were hilarious! Mel Brooks and Dom DeLuise had humorous parts as well. Tons of one-liners, spoofs and hilarious quotes in this classic 70s comedy.

What's Up, Doc?
Great slapstick comedy that still holds up. Classic! One of Barbra's best comedies. Ryan O'Neal plays the straight man with ease. Madeline Kahn's debut as Eunice Burns is fantastic! Look for a bit part by Randy Quaid. Barbra and Ryan really were a great comedy team.

Love at First Bite
Amusing 70s Dracula farce, with George Hamilton playing Dracula. Richard Benjamin is a hoot playing Van Helsing, as well as Arte Johnson(Laugh-In, 70s TV) as Renfield. Look for bit parts by the Jeffersons (Sherman Hemsley & Isabel Sanford).

The Matchmaker 1997,  R)
The Matchmaker
Sweet romantic comedy with Janeane Garofalo as a Senator's aide sent to Ireland to dig up his family tree for his latest campaign. She arrives in the middle of the town's matchmaking festival and has to fend off matchmakers while trying to get the locals to cooperate with her search. Janeane is great in this movie, so is Denis Leary as the Senator's smarmy handler.

A truly great comedy/ buddy movie set in the Vietnam era. A bunch of college grads go on one last road trip together to find their buddy Dom. One of Kevin Costner's early roles. It also features Judd Nelson. Great soundtrack!

Paint Your Wagon 1969,  PG-13)
Paint Your Wagon
Cheesy, bawdy 1969 musical centering around No Name City, a Cali frontier Gold Rush town and the partners Ben Rumson (hilariously played by Lee Marvin) and "Pardner" (Clint Eastwood). When a mormon polygamist comes thru town, he is forced to give up one of his wives, who is then auctioned off to the drunken Ben Rumson. Things get tricky when Pardner falls in love with Elizabeth (Jean Seberg) too, and when they let a pioneer family stay at their homestead. Ben and Pardner team up with Mad Jack (Ray Walston-Mr. Hand from Fast Times) on an easy way to get gold, with disasterous results! Pretty long movie but it has an intermission. Some of it was filmed in Oregon. Cute romp, worth watching just to see young Clint and Lee sing!

Elephant Parts
This little-known gem from ex-Monkee Michael Nesmith is always a fun watch.
Music videos interspersed with funny and some corny comedy skits still holds up pretty well after it's 1981 release. You get to learn the pirate alphabet, watch the vegetarian hunter, go to the Rock n' Roll Hospital and try to "Name That Drug." See spoof ads for bad horror movies, the military, car companies, typing services, "Elvis Drugs," fake TV shows, art dealers, and even "Neighborhood Nuclear Superiority." The music videos range from mellow to catchy pop rock tunes, including the winner of the very first "Video of the Year" Grammy- "Rio."
The dvd has some great extras not included in the vhs and laserdisc versions- extra skits and an awesome commentary track by Michael Nesmith. We get to hear how the video was made on a shoestring budget, funny anecdotes, and how he came up with the concept that would later become MTV.
A must see for fans of Nesmith and good cheesy early 80s comedies! It goes smashingly well with "Marnagritas" :D
