Pride and Prejudice
I always loved Jane Austen's book although at school I hated to admit it but Colin Firth turns the book into a XX rated movie.... what a fantastic combination
2
Love Actually 2003,  R)
Love Actually
Love actually ... is all around.
Not just one story but lots of little ones that at the end all fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. An interesting composition. Witty and touching at the same time.
3
Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason 2004,  R)
Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason
She is just so me
4
The English Patient 1996,  R)
The English Patient
highly recommendable. Ralph Fiennes is fantastic. Wasn't quite so impressed first time but that was due to a lot getting lost in the German translation. The original version is fantastically moving.
5
The Butterfly Effect 2004,  R)
The Butterfly Effect
This film includes all the twists I love to find in a psycho thriller. What a brilliant storyline.
Time travel has always been a point of discussion and the outcome is to be found in this film. Not only the one action you might want to change is changed but everything that happens afterwards.
At the end we discover why Evan's father was institutionalised. They both changed the wrong event. By changing the first thing that went wrong Evan no longer had any journals just as his father no longer had his photo albums.
The final change was inevitable though this too would probably have caused many other life-changing events.
A fantastic film for twisted minds.

EDIT: A month or so later I watched this DVD again..... and it had a different ending. Wowww did that freak me out. Until I realised that there are 2 DVDs in the cover and each contains the complete film but... with 2 different endings. Now that really is the coolest thing I've ever experienced. No idea which ending was in the cinemas. I'd like to give it a 6th star for that point alone.

Miracle on 34th Street 1994,  PG)
Miracle on 34th Street
I can*t believe I haven't rated this film already and actually needed to be reminded about it. It is my absolute most favourite Christmas film. It includes all the magic without the kitsch. A modern-day upbringing does not of course include childish fantasy and the magical childish belief in Santa Claus..... but children need to believe in magic. They don't need to know the problems of the world at such a young age. Here we learn how wonderful it is to believe even as an adult.
7
Empire of the Sun 1987,  PG)
Empire of the Sun
I've seen and loved this film in 3 languages now and each have the same effect. Highly recommendable.
8
Good Morning, Vietnam 1987,  R)
Good Morning, Vietnam
Robin Williams is a fantastic actor and he is very very funny. Can you imagine anybody else pulling the role of Adrian off like this? The part was written for him I'm sure. Not only the funny parts but also the more serious moments which require more feeling are played perfectly. Highly recommendable for all those who haven't had the chance to see it.
9
Field of Dreams 1989,  PG)
Field of Dreams
This film gives me the creeps in a good sort of way. When all the spirits of the past turn up it sends shivers down my spine. Not horror shivers, shivers of emotion - fantastic
10
Nanny McPhee 2006,  PG)
Nanny McPhee
A modern-day Mary Poppins. Seeing how some of my son's friends have been brought up I think there should be more such nannies around. Emma Thompson plays the part perfectly, Colin Firth is his usual fantastic self and we all remember Thomas Sangster from his role in Love Actually (don't we? - well we should)
11
The Green Mile 1999,  R)
The Green Mile
A very moving story. I haven't read the book and won't need to as the film has persuaded me fully.
12
The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
A very moving film. Historical yet fictional. Tim Robbins plays the part spectacularly too. How far would you go to achieve your ultimate goal?
If you enjoy films where the ending stays a mystery until the end then this is a film for you.
13
Schindler's List 1993,  R)
Schindler's List
A fantastically moving although factual film. At last a war film where, although made by Americans, it is not the Americans that come to the rescue but a single German. If more people had acted as Oskar Schindler did who knows what the outcome of war might have been. There is the usual message conveyed as with most factual wartime films but a second message can be heard when watching the interview with Steven Spielberg at the end of the film (as extras on the DVD) "one man CAN make a difference"
14
Finding Neverland 2004,  PG)
Finding Neverland
At long last Johnny Depp has convinced me that he really can act and not simply play the fool and look gorgeous at the same time.
A fantastic performance and a brilliant story to go with it.
I have always been a Peter Pan fan and love anything that has to do with the Peter Pan message of never growing up. I don't know why I didn't watch this film earlier.
15
The Pianist 2002,  R)
The Pianist
Sitting here at Christmas time, wrapping presents with trays of sweets and specialities around me, I then watch this film where they buy one sweet for 20 Florint and divide it into 6.......... very moving.
Adrien Brody at his best. A very demanding role which he coped with fantastically.
16
Walk the Line 2005,  PG-13)
Walk the Line
I enjoyed every minute of this film. I started out only knowing it was about Johnny Cash's life and nothing else and I didn't even know anything about that. I was surprised that it wasn't the original music but both Phoenix and Witherspoon did a fantastic job at that too. I didn't think I really liked biographies but after this I might just go and watch a couple more.
17
Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)
Forrest Gump
I can't imagine there's anyone in the world who hasn't seen and loved this film
18
Chocolat 2000,  PG-13)
Chocolat

Doctor Zhivago 1965,  PG-13)
Doctor Zhivago
A fantastic classic which I have watched over and over again and probably will watch again.
21
Sense and Sensibility 1995,  PG)
Sense and Sensibility
I even liked Hugh Grant in this one and that doesn't happen often
22
Hook 1991,  PG)
Hook
Was always a big Peter Pan fan as a child and never wanted to grow old myself so this was a must for the adult me of course. A lovely idea that I think J M Barrie would have approved of
23
The Interpreter 2005,  PG-13)
The Interpreter
I always wanted to see this film seeing as I work in a similar line myself. It turned out to be a very good political thriller.
24
Captain Corelli's Mandolin 2001,  R)
Captain Corelli's Mandolin
A love story in hard times. Beautiful scenery, beautiful acting and some beautiful music to wash it down with
25
Sommersby 1993,  PG-13)
Sommersby
I don't know how many times I've watched this film. It is one of those that you can watch over and over again and is particularly interesting seeing as it is based on a true story. A great story played by great actors. The combination of Richard Gere with Jodie Foster is a fantastic idea. Richard Gere has an aura about him that will keep him forever young.
26
Sunshine 1999,  R)
Sunshine
A stunningly interesting film starrring an outstanding Ralph Fiennes. He is perfect for the parts (yes plural) that he plays here and I cannot imagine anyone else in this role. In spite of it being a 3 hour film the first hour is far too fast-moving and for those who know nothing about the rise and fall of the Hungarian empire will no doubt get lost and confused. More should have been shown of the Hungary both during and before Emperor Franz-Josef's reign for a better comparison of what it went down to. The political argument is shown only within the Sors family (which family doesn't argue) but when the eye doesn't actually see the differences between pomp and poverty it is difficult to imagine. Falling in and out of love in this film is neither romantic nor erotic so the lovers of those genres won't get enough to satisfy themselves. A remarkable though purely factual film.
27
Nell 1994,  PG-13)
Nell
I love this film. A totally different Jodie Foster than the power woman we have had presented to us in more recent years.
Liam Neeson is rather lovely in this too, I like the "teddy bear best" comment.
28
Panic Room 2002,  R)
Panic Room
Isn't she tough?

I love thrillers and I love THIS thriller. Is it possibly a bit too improbable - yes I guess so but you never know what powers a woman might have if her child's life is in danger.
29
The Glass House 2001,  PG-13)
The Glass House
This is like really woww.... I love a film that holds you in suspense without hinting on how it is going to end right at the beginning.
It's a film I enjoy watching more than once.
30
JFK 1992,  R)
JFK
Films like this prove what I think of American politics
31
Save the Last Dance 2001,  PG-13)
Save the Last Dance
Beautiful and naive
32
The Bridges of Madison County 1995,  PG-13)
33
Ghost 1990,  PG-13)
34
Sleepless in Seattle 1993,  PG)
35
Ray 2004,  PG-13)
Ray
This is only the second biography that I've seen and I can see many similarities between the lives of Ray Charles and that of Johnny Cash. Was it the era of sudden fame and drugs?
I thought Jamie Foxx protrayed Charles brilliantly and will recommend this film
36
Brokeback Mountain 2005,  R)
Brokeback Mountain
A very moving story.
One of my other "friends" has written that the screenplay is jumpy at times and I have to agree with that. I also found it difficult to understand at times and so I switched the subtitles on.
I think homosexuals find it difficult living in this modern day and age so life in the 60s would have been far more difficult.
For the person who made a comment about how on earth anybody could imagine a cowboy could be gay....... grow up!!! I can well believe that many of them were (are?)

A comment from a gay friend of mine: These cowboys were bisexual and not homosexual otherwise nothing would have happened with their wives! (can't comment on that myself)
37
K-19: The Widowmaker 2002,  PG-13)
K-19: The Widowmaker
A film which proves that it is not only the American's that are capable of deserting their war-heroes in time of need, oh no the Russians can do it too (possibly the reason for the American's to shoot this film?).
The film shows the tension which can occur with so many people in such a confined space especially after the catastrophe's start and the ultimate dread of a slow and painful death whilst back at home they are being accused of simply not keeping in touch.
How many other similar stories are there out there that have never been uncovered?
38
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
I never thought I would ever recommend a film with Jim Carrey, who I've always thought as being the biggest fool on earth, but hey, he CAN act.
The whole concept of this film was brilliantly thought through and it will land on my favourites list.
Would it be uncanny to call this film "unforgettable"?
39
The Negotiator 1998,  R)
The Negotiator
Woww what a great film, packed with action all the way through. Had Bruce Willis been cast in place of Samuel Jackson then the title would have been Die Hard something or other. The solution to the story wasn't given away before it should have been and was a great surprise at the end.
Two fantastic actory were cast for this film.
40
Million Dollar Baby 2004,  PG-13)
Million Dollar Baby
This film is just perfect. Words fail me actually
41
The Notebook 2004,  PG-13)
The Notebook
I'm not really one for tear-jerkers but given the right mood and the right time of day and I might watch one..... that's what happened here and I'm oh so glad about it. A great story full of emotion. Happy and sad at the same time. I rented it this time but Ithink it might go on my shopping list sometime soon.
42
The Fourth Protocol 1987,  R)
43
The Butterfly Effect 2 2006,  R)
The Butterfly Effect 2
As sequels go, this one wasn't actually too bad. The whole tension of the film is of course taken away if you have seen the first one. Always wanting to make things better for friends and family is the theme - as it is in the first one.
It ends showing that his son has inherited his "powers" so that leaves things open for a third. If they do a third, then maybe they should try saving the world this time instead of relationships.
44
American History X 1998,  R)
American History X
This film is deep.

Having said that, I can't find any words to improve the reviews of so many other people on this site and so I think I will leave it at that.

Watch it, but be prepared to think about the meaning of life and what you are doing with your own.
