Velvet Goldmine 1998,  R)
Velvet Goldmine
glitter meets rock~
i cant stop saying how much i love this movie.. it has to be one of my most fav movies in the world if not my fav. This incredible study of glamrock shows an absolutely wonderful insight into the world of the 70s and 80s where beauty, makeup and rebellion collides... it also shows the attitude of the kids of that era where everyone wanted to be bisexual. not to mention it also features music from lou reed and placebo!!
2
I Am Sam 2001,  PG-13)

C.R.A.Z.Y. (Crazy)
amazing amazing.. the character draws u in and takes its time to unfold from a kid into an adult.. most enjoyable parts were when he was a kid.. and the soundtrack is FANTASTIC! ending brot tears though.. touching.. very well done.
5
Mysterious Skin 2004,  NC-17)
Mysterious Skin
this is by far one of the most amazing films ever. its so sad and some parts are uncomfortable but so so pretty..
looking into topics that not many wld want to look into... it stirs up your emotions pretty fast.. and the acting... was as they say, phenomenal.
6
Edward Scissorhands 1990,  PG-13)
Edward Scissorhands
the best tim burton film ever. and one of johnny depp's most awesome roles.
7
Milk 2008,  R)
Milk
This is absolutely BRILLIANT! Loved the use of archival footage and how gus intergrated it with his filming. Gus van sant is a genius. GENIUS. The film is at once touching and also humourous yet strikes a deep chord in everyone. And the cast is so damn GOOD! josh brolin and sean penn were absoulutely perfect! and not to mention the rest of the supporting cast like james franco, emile hirsch, diego luna and joseph cross! Stunning. This is a well thought out piece of work. And a very important piece of history well worth the reminder. It reminds us all about how important our human rights are and not to take it for granted. Its really amazing to see how Harvey Milk changed history.
Overall, just do yourself a favour and watch this if you havent!
8
Brothers of the Head 2006,  R)
Brothers of the Head
This film left a huge impact on me. its about siamese twins who were "born together, die together". As a twin myself, this topic is very difficult to watch without bawling my eyes out. Its a very dark film.. The long quiet shots of the brothers hanging on to each other and the parts where they quarrel but they cant get away from each other is just amazing. and its absolutely brilliant that its actually a "documentary" about another documentary. not to mention the music was awesome.
9
A.I. Artificial Intelligence 2001,  PG-13)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
far from being a horrific scifi thriller type thing, a.i is simply a very good film that moved me to tears. It does however make you think about the future of ppl.. and robots.. and if these robots will develop feelings just like haley's character did.
10
Bang Bang You're Dead 2002,  R)
Bang Bang You're Dead
let me tell u this movie is no walk in the park.. hard-hitting and honest to the core. everything the lead felt was exactly what i felt and it made me feel so much hate after watching it. just be careful when u watch it.. may trigger if u s-i. really captured me emotionally and now is one of my fav movies. made me cry loads. so be prepared.
11
The Pianist 2002,  R)
The Pianist
one of the best films ever. such gripping emotions... i cldnt believe how horrific the war was.. polanski did a great job!
12
28 Days Later 2002,  R)
28 Days Later
just watched this again.. for the i-don't-know-how-many-th time.. and im gonna review it again.

this is an amazing amazing film.. it really makes you feel like you fear for your life. makes you terrified.. yet quite emotional too.
This is by far the most amazing zombie movie ever.. and to miss it is stupid.
13
28 Weeks Later... 2007,  R)
28 Weeks Later...
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! it differs from the first in terms of storyline and some how i think the plot was alittle better..

veryvery intense and the timing is perfect. what differs 28 days later and 28 weeks later from the other zombie flicks is the ability to make u identify with the characters, the character's growth and development during the movie and the ability to portray human emotions.

simply a must watch for any fan of 28 days later. MUST MUST MUST WATCH!

one of the best horror films in a long long long time.
14
A Single Man 2009,  R)
A Single Man
I must say.. this is probably one of the best films of this year so far. Its simply one of the most beautiful and stylish films I've seen in a while. Its also heart breaking, seductive, alluring... Arresting. The cast is absolutely brilliant and the direction and photography is SUPERB. Colin Firth's sad face makes your heart ache along with his. As he mourns for his lost love, you start to feel it too. The flash backs and day dreams fill you in and as the story unfolds, you begin to put yourself in his shoes. Nicholas hoult's character makes you question his motive and then when you see him holding george's gun, you finally understand.

The story is set in the 60s where everything seemed so innocent with its muted colors and yet exudes such sadness. Not to mention the moments of humor injected lifted its mood and made it even more heartfelt.

There's definitely room for thought after watching it. Movies like these deserves the praise for giving everyone their own interpretation and experience of the film.
15
Half Nelson 2006,  R)
Half Nelson
absolutely delightful. I loved the relationship between Drey and her teacher Dan. very beautiful.. sweet but sorrowful.. very interesting yet complex feelings surrounds ryan gosling's character.. and surely i must praise ryan's acting.. amazing.

..and what a great soundtrack.
16
My Own Private Idaho 1991,  R)
My Own Private Idaho
once again, gus van sant.. one of the few geniuses in this business... absolutely beautiful piece about friendship and life on the streets.. absolutely amazing.
River Pheonix gave the most extra-ordinary performance ever... playing a soft spoken sometimes odd narcoleptic.
and the chemistry between him and keanu reeves really worked well.
the movie touched on things such as sexual identity and choosing of relationships and friendships.. absolutely gorgeous.

o.. and the scene where mike told scott that he loved him eventhough he wasnt paid to do so.. is just the sweetest thing ive ever seen... makes me melt...
17
Rachel Getting Married 2008,  R)
Rachel Getting Married
I do not understand why people complain about it being hand held. It's not because it was a "cheap" production. Its a choice. When it opened with hand held camera, I was drawn into the documentary style straight away. It was definitely needed for this film.

This film is close to my heart as the whole dysfunctional family, sibling rivalry and the black sheep of the family type thing is o so familiar.

Anne hathaway outdid herself with kym's character always vying for attention because she just returned from rehab but everyone's giving their attentions to rachel instead. The whole contrast of rachel getting married (and all the wonderful wedding scenes) and kym's return causes chaos to the viewers forcing you to side with either one of them.

the story is an emotional rollercoaster.. made me smile several times but made me cry even more. Its both heart wrenching and uplifting in its own way.

The supporting cast is absolutely endearing. each and everyone of them. Not to mention the musicians in the film lending themselves to the amazing soundtrack that follows.

Jonathan demme did a great job with the direction of the film.
18
Taking Woodstock 2009,  R)
Taking Woodstock
I can't describe how much i love this film. Very very enjoyable. Its more of a "coming of age" film if you will then an actual story about woodstock's music. Ang lee's cinematography/photography in this is fantastic. I am in awe. Many many awesome cast members including Liev schrieber, paul dano's brief appeareance and the amazing Imelda staunton who was simply fantastic! Ang lee's split screen scenes were very interesting but the best part was definitely the acid trip.

I love how we get to grow with elliot the main character and feel his confusion as he discovers the love and peace these kids that were coming for woodstock was trying to preach. His relationship with his parents were also at strains and to see him going through it, im pretty sure we can all relate.
I love that Ang lee captured the whole vibe of woodstock with no use of archival footage and yet it felt authentic. The drug use was glorious. Danny elfman scores the soundtrack which was absolutely fantastic too. I really don't have much to complain about.

If you're watching this, go in and watch with an open mind. It's not about the festival or the music, its about the love that it brought amongst its children.
19
Rebel Without a Cause 1955,  PG-13)
Rebel Without a Cause
i thoroughly enjoyed this. you got to understand that it was a totally different time back then. I loved the relationship shared between the three esp the relationship that could have been between plato and jim. Also, the side story of jim trying to let his father understand him but to no avail.. isn't that what everyone could relate to? and the fact that he wanted his father to stand up for him, to be someone he could rely on.
it was a finely made tragedy drama for its time and anyone who likes james dean would want to watch it for his outstanding performance.
20
SLC Punk 1998,  R)

Jurassic Park
one of the first films that got me crazy about movies. the high budget sets and the huge dinosaurs absolutely stunned me... because i was so young when i watched it.. lol.. and the soundtrack is absolutely awesome.
31
Home Alone 1990,  PG)
Home Alone
haha! i think i had a similar wish for my family to disappear..
32
The Outsiders 1983,  PG)
The Outsiders
what a superb cast. plus a fantastic soundtrack (stevie wonder!) and fantastic filming that was very much a reference to the 50s filming styles. The acting was fine to me. The reason they were so wooden was most of them were still young and fresh and it added to the uncomfortable age the greasers were at and to me that helped the film. I love the social divide between the greasers and the socs. the film is very touching as well. awesome.
33
Labyrinth 1986,  PG)
Labyrinth
where do i start??? XD david bowie's starr role as the goblin king.. a delicious one i might add. along with the muppets, the film was incredibly fun! and sparked an interest in contact juggling!! XD

Funny Games 2007,  R)
Funny Games
i loved it. all the actors did a damn fine job. i espacially loved michael pitt. and i think tim roth really was spectacular. could have felt every inch of pain. but i think i enjoyed myself a little too much whilst watching this. i didn't feel that the movie was draggy like some ppl complained. I thought that the director did a swell job creating all this violent-ness for us and the suspense and thrill.. o.. and the soundtrack rocks. haha. a genius this film.
38
Never Let Me Go 2010,  R)
Never Let Me Go
This film is absolutely heartbreaking to watch. One of the most original films I've ever seen (thanks in part to the book of cos). All three actors were exceptional esp Carey Mulligan as kathy H. This is no less scifi without bright lights and alien beings as it is a romantic tragedy. brilliant.
39
Maurice 1987,  R)
Maurice
"of the oscar wilde sort" haha.. I LOVE THIS FILM. i love how difficult it was for them to be together.. and how slowly as if if he were to hide the feelings, clive thought he could change. i love the fact that maurice ended up in love with some one of a different class.
40
Brideshead Revisited 2008,  PG-13)
Brideshead Revisited
Such majestic angles and magnificent cast. The plot was littered with many tiny details and it was a pleasure to watch. I've seen many people review it as draggy but I never once felt it was too long. I loved how it ends where it started. The journey that we're brought through. The love and the religion, everything that influenced their lives.

I love the relationships between sebastian, charles and julia. what youth!
It was gorgeously heart wrenching.
41
Up 2009,  PG)
Up

42
What We Do Is Secret 2007,  R)
What We Do Is Secret
I love this. I fucking love this. Its not about darby's life, its about his lyrics. I dont know how accurate the film was but its still damn good a story to tell. not to mention the awesome soundtrack. It's not a movie to "idolize" Darby crash neither were they trying to prove that he was "god" of punk or whatever... it was just somebody's life that we could identify with. i say fuck the haters, just watch it. O and shane west did a damn great job! thumbs up!
43
Stuart: A Life Backwards 2007,  Unrated)
Stuart: A Life Backwards
extremely moving and touching. bawled my eyes out. tom hardy and benedict cumberbatch is AMAZING here. its scary how tom hardy can transform into a whole different character. It's a study on the relationship between two human beings of different walks of life. As you watch, you can't help but feel an attachment for stuart.

Requiem for a Dream 2000,  R)
Requiem for a Dream
this movie fucked my head. how many films can actually fuck with a person's head? the ending was a little too scary but it got the point across. This film shows the true reality of drugs but it doesnt turn you off of drugs either.
50
Sunshine 2007,  R)
Sunshine
brilliant film.. scared the hell out of me. im afraid of scifi movies.. The visuals are amazing and the acting superb. Ending's real sad... :(

Another great film by the amazing danny boyle.
51
Last Days 2005,  R)
Last Days
very depressing. michael pitt is amazing. Gus van sant is a genius. the film makes for a good look into the last days of a wonderful mind laced with drugs or what we assume to be drugs. Seems like a good way to go. sometimes the film becomes almost voyeuristic and feels as if we shouldnt be looking in on it. The silence is deafening but very real. Every step is echoed and every creak is loud bringing a definite surreal feel to it. A good mix and match if you will.
What i like about the film is that there's no loud music, no loud life.. just a soft death.
52
Kids in the Hall - Brain Candy 1996,  R)
Kids in the Hall - Brain Candy
What a hilarious hilarious movie!!! Anybody who loves kids in the hall will absolutely fall in love with this movie... i espacially love the part where cancer boy wins an award for his whistling song thing. hahahahha!

53
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
wow.. jim carrey is amazing.

i love the storyline. its very very sweet and touching yet a little scary. such sorrowful work...

i love the direction and cinematography of it all... the way michael gondry does the little things in scenes. like how the scene where he was steering the wheel and crying, the reflection of rain was on his hands.. and things like that.

and... kate winslet.. wow. she played her role well... yea..

i think it makes one think about the contemplation of life and also the meaning of love and relationships.
54
Son of Rambow 2007,  PG-13)
Son of Rambow
i am in love with this film. The kids were so earnest about making the film which ended up honestly hilarious but so heart warming. I love the fact that its set in the 80s and i love the way their friendship developed and the touch on religion. I love it! theres something truly british about the film.

i should have watched this earlier! (cept i was about 8 or 9 when it came out!)

This is what i have been waiting for... such an amazing amazing cast and plot. WAY better than queen of the damned... and kirsten dunst IS ASTOUNDING. acting such a mature role at such a tender age.

i will watch this over and over again as long as i live.
57
Welcome to the Dollhouse 1995,  R)
Welcome to the Dollhouse
absolutely endearing. Heather Matarazzo did an amazing job as Dawn wiener who I'm pretty sure everyone can relate to. That awkward preteen age. The other characters were equally as hilarious and awkward. Particularly Brendan who played the school bully but who was actually a tortured soul and who was having an affair with Dawn. Love the storyline. Basically the bleak life of a girl where things just don't work out for her. I absolutely love it.
58
Edge of Seventeen 1998,  R)

I dont regret buying the dvd! This rocks! and the fact that they used "aquarius (let the sun shine in)" as their main theme is freaking awesome. The other songs are hilarious and fun too! Speedway Junky
I absolutely ADORE this movie. Eric's character is one of torture and sadness and johnny's cluelessness bodes well with each other. Very strong script and such a sad ending. I actually really liked the filming as opposed by many. Also it doesnt hurt that gus van sant is the producer. I can see some influences.
67

another brilliant film by todd stephens! Very touching coming of age film with such heart. its filled with dreamy filming and lots of stevie nicks (of cos) and the cure inspired scenes.. a film perfect for the dreamers or anyone who has ever had a dream and tried to persue it.
