160
Dogville 2003,  R)
Dogville
DOGVILLE is a movie that really defies all convention.,just so unique, and i didn't see this movie style coming!brilliant filmaking by von trier, and anthony dod mantle(oscar winning D.O.P of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE,fyi).surely the best cinematography i've seen in long time! well,i know this is not for everyone (maybe many people will hate its style and its conclusion),but it gives me to thinks again about humanity, and the aspect of human nature as a whole.Damn great!
161
Chugyeogja (The Chaser) 2008,  Unrated)
Chugyeogja (The Chaser)
The Chaser kick ass!! after i'm enduring myself for so long with cheesy thriller from hollywood, the koreans save the day again! (at least for me). this is just, well,i;m not saying it is unpredictable, but when i watch this, there are times when i think "shit, this is just so not thriller-for-dummies by the book cliche hollywood often offers".i enjoy a movie where i had no idea what's gonna happen next, and this is one of it.if there's one letdown,it is the finale confrontation of the goodie and the baddie, which is the only cliche part in this movie, but fortunatelyl, the director take the step again with the final shot, which is sort of sad and leaves many intrepetation.surely the best thriller i've ever seen in years!
162
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) 1920,  Unrated)
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)
i rarely love silent movies.it's not that i hate them. i respect them.,its just,.for me,watching silent movies today, with the growth of technology and all, is just an irrelevant thing to do.i barely can sit through till the end.i can't get pass the first 20 minutes of chaplin movie.hell,i can't even get pass the first 5 minutes of metropolis.
but this, this is diferrent,.Dr. caligari is a horror movie that the silence and style just enhance the experience.the musics are haunting, the atmosphere is chilling, and the story, full of mystery!
163
Amadeus 1984,  PG)
Amadeus
in mathematics, they said that, when negative meet negative, then the result is positive.well,it looks like that theory could also be implemented in films.Amadeus is the perfect example for me.this movie genre is biopic, and at the same time,a period drama.both is a genre that i don't quite liked.but AMADEUS,whoa, its blown me.it quite possibly the best biopic and also the best period drama that i've ever seen.just spectacular in every aspect..
164
Singin' in the Rain 1952,  G)
Singin' in the Rain
yeah right,a definite classic.this is a kind of movie that makes me smile all the time..and although the song is a tad old for my taste, but the coreography is just amazing (there's this one thing that feature one of the most amazing stunt in a movie i've ever seen by Donald O'Connor, which is in my opinion, the coolest sidekick ever!!)
165
The Player 1992,  R)
The Player
wow.,a masterpiece that i didn't see coming! first of all,i really not into robert altman.his previous movies that i watched (SHORTCUTS, GOSFORD PARK) is just an OK for me.secondly,.when talking about altman,it looks like that everybody has in mind is M.A.S.H,or nashville,or Mccabe and mrs miller.i don't recall hearing THE PLAYER that much.,well,i haven't yet to seen those three movies, but at least, this one is supposedly on par,.movie couldn't get better than this.this is a perfect thriller, and also a perfect satire about the hollywood system.,add in the great performance of tim robbins, playing as the most jerkest protagonist i've ever seen, this is truly a gem.and having a great tracking opening shot didn't hurt either.oh and it got Jeremy Piven pre-Ari Gold (in a movie about hollywood??haha, what a coincidence!)
166
Punch-Drunk Love 2002,  R)
Punch-Drunk Love
unconventional and beautifully shot romance movie.very refreshing ! PTA rocks(as always)!!
167
Breaking the Waves 1996,  R)
Breaking the Waves
Von trier hit the spot again !loves Emily Watson, loves Stellan Skarsgaard, loves the soundtrack, and loves the powerful and dogmatic ending !
168
Antichrist 2009,  Unrated)
Antichrist
James Berardinelli, one of my favorite film critics, can't decide whether to give this movie a 0 or 4 stars.well, after watching ANTICHRIST myself,i got the point. This is one of the most brilliant, and at the same time, the most pretentious filmaking i've ever seen.

the opening 5 minutes (the prologue,in which von trier tells it)is just beautiful. i've never been as captivated (at least, not since the opening of THE FALL) by the extraordinary cinematography (once again,Anthony Dod Mantle proves, that he and von trier is a match made in heaven).

But after the opening, here comes the pretentious side (which fortunately for ME,i find it rather Genius than pretentious). with a lot of disturbing scenes comes around, the slow moving paces of the revealing truth,.and (as usual) a 'more than meets the eyes' ending (i myself still can't find the meaning of that last shot, now please someone tell me!)

as much as it is von trier egotastic project, this is also Gainsbourg and Dafoe playground. there are no one else on screen(except for a brief scene that feature their son).and i'm glad that they really deliver.it is their performance that makes me goes to a rather favorable more than disgust it (and believe me,the line is very very thin)

so overall, regardless of all the controversy,i think antichrist is a pretentiousness at its most genius

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
again, another scorsese underrated gem.this, and that movie called after hours should be his classic, not that movie about a boxer,or some lunatic taxi driver,or a joe pesci-gone-mad-mafia-movie. maybe it's scorsese image of the maker of 'guy' movie that makes this movie gone overlooked by many.this is funny and inspiring !(at least for all the single mother out there, don't give up!).haha and i didn't realize there's Jodie Foster in this!

Il conformista (The Conformist)
since it is a bertolucci movie,it is no doubt has a beautiful cinematography.but what i like the most from THE CONFORMIST is not the beauty itself, but more of its unstructured narrative, which is a rarity on those days.this is a film that demand a second viewing.,and for good sake.,the script didn't give a simple A to B narrative.in fact, the movie rather very confused to watch, especially in the first hour.but, like trying to solve a puzzle, when the piece is done, then all its left is a feeling of satisfaction.,truly bertolucci masterpiece!

Mother (Madeo)
if i am an academy voter,i will try my best to make this become one of the nominee of 2010 oscar for best foreign film. that statement just tells just how brilliant this movie is. This is comes as no surprise,as it comes from Boong Joon-ho (alongside Park Chan-wook and Kim Jee-won,the three lions of korea).

from the tone of the film,it is not much diferrent than his Memories of Murder. But if when i watching MoM the feeling is just like watching a Fincher's movie, well,in Mother,it is just refreshing.only by reading the premise,we know we're into something entirely different.A mother trying to solve a murder mystery to help his son getting away from jail?i'm in.

The highlight of Mother is,of course, the titular character herself, played mesmerizingly good by Kim Hye-ja (i also wanna take my money on her for best actress of 2010,by a long shot). Her elegant dancing in the beginning and ending of the film through some beautiful tango-ish music, is just enough to convince me to adore her character,no matter what act she did in the movie

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
well,i gotta to admit it:my love for this movie grows over time. at first viewing,i found it boring and out of context (i'm mildly disappointed and upset that this is not a story about a man under unusual circumstances, but more of a love story saga) ,.but to think of it again now,i just feels that this is a really wonderful film, both in technical and storytelling aspect..,Fincher really crafted his story with a such sophisticated hands, and don' forget that beautiful ending, and Cate Blanchett at her most "angelic" state.,Magnificent.

Though i never get the idea of Harakiri itself, but i got to admit, this is a true timeless classic epic story.and that last finale?whoa.now i know where Tarantino Kill Bill The bride vs Crazy 88 inspiration comes from..

after the traumatic experience that i had with a rom-com genre this year with He;s Just Not That Into You,Marc Webb gives something extraordinary antithesis:a wonderful romantic comedy that very refreshing and different. and by casting the one and only,ZOOEY DESCHANEL,only makes this film even greater. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
this is probably the most divided of the series. some people call it boring, and not much action, other say its the most charming until now.,and i'm stepping into the latter category.

yes, this is it ! the best Harry Potter movie since Prisoner Of Azkaban.Really like david Yates approach, such as minimizing the action, throwing some clues, and adding some scenes.,now before watching this (and after watching the so-so 5th installment),i'm rather skeptical about he taking the directorial chair(for the third time!)for the last movie. but now,i support him 100 %

just can't wait till 2010..

Bakjwi (Thirst)
am i become too subjective,or Chan wook really is brilliant?? It's just, every work, and i mean, every work of his that i already seen is always great.and this one is no exception.Looks like he is my new Kubrick

This time,he moves forward from his revenge trilogy, and takes a vampire genre as his main palette.supported by his favorite actor,Song Kang-hoo (JSA,sympathy for mr vengeance) and an ex beauty pageant model Kim Ok-vin (which, her beauty, resemblance one of my favorite actress from my country) as a unusual couple of much complexities.

it is in this film, that Chan Wook shows all his touch into the screen (he himself told the media, that THIRST is his most accomplished film to date). there are violence, controversial image, wild romance, darkly humor, beautiful scenery, wonderful cinematography, you tell..

So,while not as great as his masterpiece, such as Oldboy,or JSA,but i thought this is still an above average vampire movie, thanks to that gifted hand of chan wook craftmanship

Masterpiece ! Simply put,one of the best film of this decade. The power of this film is, the beautiful black and white cinematography, the great and effective use of music, and the performance of Lars Rudolph as the main character,Janos. Just by seeing his eyes,i could feels the emotion that his character endured. The exhaustion, the fear, the awe (the scene when he admired the great whale in the trailer,is just wonderful)..

before watching this,i always thought that INSIDE MAN is Spike Lee's best movie of this decade.but now,not anymore. This is his best of the 2000's,if not of all his film (i haven't seen his classic,DO THE RIGHT THING yet).

This ode to post 9/11 new york city is a powerful, profound, and a touching film. Edward Norton, though still far from his best work in the 90's (American History X,Primal Fear) did enough to show the fragility of the main character.Love that "FUCK YOU!" monologue scene, and that open-ended and ambigous ending. and don't forget that Terence Blanchard emotional score..

The White Ribbon (Das weisse Band)
at last,a haneke film that i could endure (and what a masterpiece it is,an extraordinary crafted tale). There are two things that makes this film stands out from other haneke's film. The first is the narrative. by telling the story from the first person perspective (in this case, the teacher of the village),the film never loses its grip. the story, flows perfectly. The second is its beautiful black and white cinematography and beautiful landscape.unlike any other haneke film, which is,just so simple and boring (image-wise),but in white ribbon, well, you could capture any image of the film, send it to a photography competition, and you could win from it.it's THAT beautiful. as the story itself.no need to say, this is as good as any other of his story. The difference is,this time he captures it on screen perfectly!

when i thought this is just another boarding school film..,well,this is waayy beyond that..very different, refreshing, and quite unsettling,INNOCENCE is an eerie and luscious form of art from Lucile Hadzihalilovic.,with many simbolic metaphors and beautiful green-ish cinematography (just look at the poster!),.and the film also has its moments of tension and mystery.with a resolution that cannot be described easily, probably the best fairy tale about young women i've ever seen, only second to Pan's labyrinth

imagine the shawshank redemption meet city of god.well the result would be more or less like this,a completely raw and brutal film about life in prison !
and Tahar Rahim, well, speaking of the glorious work of fate, the fact that he got the role of malik el djebena after sharing a taxi with Jaqcues Audiard, the director,is wondrous. his performance is so compelling , that i did not afraid to compare it with Al Pacino performances in Godfather. his character is evolving along the film. At first we just see him new in prison, just trying to survive.but as the 2 hours and 28 minutes progress, he get tougher and wiser, and everytime he is onscreen,he own it. definitely my favorite film of 2009.

A Perfect Getaway
i can't imagine the world we live in...people Love State Of Play, Orphan, and Law Abiding Citizen, but not this? judging by the flixster users and critics, i know i'm alone in this. but in my opinion, this is one of the most smartly handled and twisted thriller about..em, twist i've ever seen in a long time. Thank you David Twohy (who succeedly departed from his riddick chronicles)

Twohy makes this film as a self-mockery of all the twist out there, that is become more tiring and tiring lately (with State Of Play, Orphan, and Law Abiding Citizen, as a main examples).

With a beautiful scenery of Hawaii as a backdrop, and a nice and believable performance, especially from The guys (Timothy Olyphant, Chris Hemsworth, and Steve Zahn), and a perfect pacing, makes this, even without a twist, already an engaging thriller.

but, By creating a character of Steve Zahn as a screenwriter, putting the usual "red herring" as suggested in the film itself and mock it to the max, and created 2 pair of characters that seems to be a usual "suspects" of the crime(Chris hemsworth & Marley Shelton and Kiele Sanchez & Timothy Olyphant) makes this a very engaging whodunit.

Many critics into this film is, this film cheated. Well, i do feel the same the first time the twist is exposed (which is, make me loathed it too. at first).but then to think of it again, i am now completely assured .it is all in the detail, Twohy did not lie, nor did he cheated the audience.

Also, this film did not fall into that classic "monologuing" trap thing, which makes me more admire it. If there's one backslash, it is the quite typical hollywood ending. But don't worry, it will only lasted about three minutes. as for the first 1 hour and 35 minutes, it is, as the title suggest, a perfect getaway for all the standard and typical thriller out there !

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
what a surprising treat ! first of all, because i've never a big fan of Wes Anderson. And secondly, because the consensus that said this is one of his more lesser work. But truth be told, this is his film that i enjoyed the most (though i had yet to see rushmore). With such a constrained comedic performance from Bill Murray, a witty script of Anderson and (no surprise!!) Noah Baumbach, and of course, a stylish direction of Anderson. This film would be a perfect companion with THE BOAT THAT ROCKED for a back-to-back viewing. both had the same 'fun' level, but while TBTR is a pure style over substance (and a great one,it is),but this film, like all of Wes Anderson film, over something more than that. Again,he put a family lesson class here. Definitely among the best comedy of the noughties.

Aside from being a great western film, this is also one hell of a buddy flick motion picture. The chemistry between Newman and Redford is just amazing,no wonder they work together again in THE STING. One scene in particular that captures their unique relationship perfectly is the time when they trapped in the edge of a fall, and has to jump into the river. Hilarious

Vengeance Is Mine 1979,  Unrated)
Vengeance Is Mine
a different breed of serial crime motion picture,.and i tell you what,.this is on par, if not better, with such newer serial killer drama such as Silence Of The Lambs, Se7en, or Memories Of Murder.

Things that i like the most from this film is how Imamura depicted the character of Iwao Enokizu, a serial killer that has killed 6 peoples and on the run,.instead of showing the psychological aspect of him, Imamura looks like just trying to tell that this man is born that way,his character is given. a monster unleashed in this flawed world .reminds me a lot with the Joker in the The Dark Knight ( The character, not the acting).

The story structure also very effective, that even in the long 140 minutes, the film didn't feel too long. The flashback played very wonderfully and nicely fit.

So overall,i was in complete surprise with this Imamura masterpiece. This is a brilliant, and a little bit, overlooked crime/serial killer film.,highly recommended !

And while i understand that this film is not for everyone ( Panties everywhere, extreme violent, controversial religious theme arc), but i just feels the urge that, EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE THIS FILM. trust me, it?s a unique experience. Army Of Shadows is just brilliant in every single point. acting, directing, cinematography, music, costume, and everything. The story is revolving around the time in which nazi occupied france. but unlike that Tarantino's fairy tale, this is straight and simple, a true story. And what an intense and nail biting story it is, from the opening image of the army of Nazi marching on Champ eulises (forgives my horrible spelling ) into the final act. Engaging !

while to be completely honest, i prefer the film ended in the part 1, since Part 2, in my opinion is just an extended of what was in Part 1, nothing real important into the story. But still,i don't mind extended, because the character is strong, that looking at their life for another 3 hours didn't hurt. Heavenly Creatures pretty much sums up all of Peter Jackson's trait of filmmaking. The titles, weirdly, just summarize what was he been doings in Holywood. Heaven, and creatures. The story is somewhat tragic, with bad luck happens all the time to the titular character, Matsuko. Fish Story (Fisshu sutori)
Fish Story is to Armageddon what Signs is to Independence Day, loooking at the story from a different point of view. Only everything that goes in Fish Story is pretty out-of-the-box (though quite predictable. but still, this is a very refreshing film ).

The plot is about some impending apocalypse, in which a comet sized about 5 kilometers in diameter is about to hit the earth in 5 hours. instead of telling the story of some bunch of person that goes to the space and detonate the comet (viva armageddon !! ), the film goes along the way and try to tell of, how could a troubled 70's Japanese song, entitled "Fish Story", save the world from the apocalypse.

The mystery is part of the fun. throughout, the films goes back and forth the 70's (in which the band created the song ), the 80's, the 90's, the 2009, and finally 2012, in which the film takes place.

while. like i said before, its is not fully unpredictable ( to be completely honest, i already can thread all the piece right at the two third at the film ), but i appreciate the films for the super-innovative narrative concept. It looks if Tarantino, instead of making Jackie brown, make this film instead. and a little bit of horror and action didn't hurt, either.

So overall, this is one of the most refreshing film i've seen in a long time, and might get into my 2009 top 10 ( yes, it's that good ).

Come and See (Idi i smotri) 1985,  Unrated)
Come and See (Idi i smotri)
about one month ago ,a friend of mine once asked me," hey, Have you seen Come & See ?" i replied : "no, what is that ?"."what ?? you never heard of it ?? it's the best war movies. like, EVER !".

Since that defining conversation, i am so dying to see this film, which he said will makes Schindler's List feels like a telettubies movie. And after a somewhat fortunate event (fate, maybe), not long after, another friend of mine ( which, after watching it, gave the same opinion, that this is, the best war movie ever) just got a copy of it. and so i borrowed it.

And yep, the feeling i got after watching it is, more or less, the same. While it is too early to say that this is the Best war movie of all time, but it is definitely, one of the best. now a question raised, how come this film get overlooked by many when there's a conversation of this genre ?? This is, at least better than Platoon, or Saving Private Ryan. And would be a worthwhile companion for Schindler's List, for one-two emotional punch.

The biggest strength of this Klimov's masterpiece is, not the nature of violence depicted on screen. Unlike Spielberg's Schindler's List, in which violence are everywhere, and a girl with red dress had to get involved, to get the viewer's sympathy (and it worked for me), Come and See didn't need that. The gore are just suggested implicitly. but it worked just the same.

And don't forget the harrowing sound effect ( especially in the first half of the movies ). These fairly disturbing, yet highly effective sound, is just perfect ! by the time the Mozart piece played out near the end, the chilling sensation of the ugliness of war comes to its full effect. And Thanks to Aleksei Kravchenko's performance, the impact is, indeed, powerful.

Uzak (Distant)
a rarity has happen : i enjoyed this SLOW drama. Distant is just amazing to keep my eyes wide open, while the english title is translated "Distant", but the movie feels so close to my (if not ours) everyday life (awkward moments with some distant cousin, taking advantages of someone kindness, a long gaze of watching beautiful women, and still many that i can't mention all of it ).the sum is, every scene is worth watching for. The 'Porn scene' is definitely one of the funniest moment of cinema, and also the most truthful.LOL

Stardust Memories
what a great, even brilliant, homage to Fellini's 8 1/2. From the opening scene, the black and white, the story, evertyhing is just so 8 1/2. and this doesn't mean that Allen just copied the film and makes his own 8 1/2. he still put some of his trademark, most notable are a wonderfully smart philosophical annendum, and break the fourth wall scene. overall, Remarkable, and could become my favorite Allen's movie, probably with a second viewing

it's pretty much a shame, that one of the best sci-fi of the decade, comes in a small package of a short film. definitely Better than its bigger expansion, District 9

Un Conte de Noël (A Christmas Tale)
A Family unlike no others ! that was my first reaction about the depiction of Vuillard family, which is a center stage of A Christmas Tale. While the theme of dysfunctional family is a little bit tired out, but in the hand of Arnaud Desplechaun, the result is, a charming, yet dark, motion picture. Very unique, and i love Desplechin sleazy and hippy direction. Making 2 and a half hours flies by

The Man Who Fell to Earth 1976,  R)
The Man Who Fell to Earth
too ambitious ? i don't think so. Sure, The Man Who Fell to Earth offers no easy narrative. the story is kinda jumpy, and there's no clear timeline. but again, Roeg display a very ambitious work of art, which also happens to be entertaining. And by casting Bowie in this, Roeg has probably makes one of the most perfect casting in the history of cinema. Bowie isolated face works well with the film core !

Close-up
never been a "simple" film like this has a very emotionally involving effect as this in my life. Just like the film title, whenever the camera takes a close-up shot into the face of Ali Sabzian, the Makhmalbaf imposter, the feeling is a feeling of fragility, and yet, makes me deeply symphathise into his character.

Offret (The Sacrifice) 1986,  PG)
Offret (The Sacrifice)
What an exhilarating experience ! Sorry Mr. Tarkovsky, for giving some terrible early judgment, thanks to the raw pretentiousness of Solyaris. but after Zerkalo, and now this, i'm obliged to change my opinion about you. You are, indeed, really a Legend.

Offret, so far, stands as my favorite Tarkovsky films to date (though i still haven't seen another of his masterpiece, such as Andrei Rublev or Ivan's Childhood). As a last film from him, i can say that he really leaves a great legacy with this one. Add in with the fact that this one is dedicated to his son, well, if i'm his son, i'm gonna cried right out in the end of the film.

From the technical perspective, many said that this last work from him, is much more Bergman than Tarkovsky. At some point, i can see why the comparison. It is as philosophical as Bergman. But, aside from that, this is a pure Tarkovsky. From the constant shot, a poetic dialogue, great image, effective use of Bach, and his awe for nature ( just see the last shot. Brilliant). Tarkovsky combines all this elements into one very gripping story, about how one family (or in fact, on person) cope with the world in an impending apocalypse. overall, this is, in my opinion, Tarkovksy in his most mature side.

now this is what i call a perfect dark comedy ! Todd Solondtz really upping his game here. After the somewhat brilliant coming of age drama, Welcome to the Dollhouse. Solondtz sarcastic and grim script are the stars here.

Punishment Park
First, allow me to calm myself for a minute.....

Okay, done.
and for the record, watching Punishment park is the most emotional experience in my 22 years of existence. This is, simply, beyond powerful. Peter Watkins, thank you, and damn you for succeded in playing with all my sense with this film. Outrage, fear, sadness, depression.. It all comes in this 90 minutes packages. I am blind at first. All i know is, Punishment Park is a work of a director, that his film, Edvard Munch, i adored so much. I didn't expect a slightest thinking that my eyes will floors with tears, my heart pounding with intense feelings, and shaken. BIG TIMES.

Punishment Park tells a two parrallel stories. The first one being a tribunals hearing of some hippies waiting for their fate, and another is on the desert, in which the convicts wandering around the so called "Punishment Park". Both stories, are, equivalently devastating. Add in with Watkins genius filmmaking style, that makes this feels like an authentic documentary, really had me on my nerve. By the time the film end, all i want to do is punch the TV, and/or hug someone i love. Yes, it is that affecting.

Nuit et Brouillard (Night and Fog)
Night and Fog, mostly regarded as one of the best documentary of all time, holds up to its reputation. This is a complete masterpiece. Resnais sews images after images very carefully, and poignant. Every images is harrowing. if there's one thing that bugged me, is the quite happy and joyful music that lies in the background, that seems didn't suit the images on screen. But nevertheless, like i said in the beginning, this film deserved to become one of the most powerful documentary !

Ikiru (Doomed) (Living) (To Live)
a complete mature and masterful achievement from Kurosawa, this is. It is such a shame, that it took me almost a year to finally watched my second Kurosawa ( since my first Kurosawa experience, The Seven Samurai, i found a little bit on the overrated side ). So i am quite relieved, that in Ikiru, now i know why Kurosawa is one of the greatest director of all time. Just so sad, with a great technical, and a great and unique, narrative style. Takashi Simura's brilliant performance also one of the highest point here. CLASSIC.

Don't Look Now 1973,  R)
Don't Look Now
Easy. It's in the last 15 minutes. The infamous climax, that makes me even forgot the sometimes boring previous moments ( and to be fairly honest, i was already getting asleep twice, before the climax happens ). But, that doesn't mean that the film didn't have any greatness aside the ending. being a Nic Roeg film ( yes, one of my favorite auteurs ), this is a stylishly unique film, with a delicate setting of the city of Venice. a quite melancholistic soundtrack by Pino Donaggio, and of course, one of the best sex scene ever grace on cinema. Christie and Sutherland gives a subtle performance as a grieving couples who tries to cope with the death of their daughter. Roeg slowly builds the tension, and raises is significantly in its last 15 minutes. Overall, there are many goodness to be found in Don't Look Now, and, could become my favorite Roeg film, with a second viewing, maybe..

Happy Together just gives me a further proof, just how much i'm in love with WKW directorial style ! Europa (Zentropa)
For those who thinks Sin City is the first movie of its kind, in a matter of its very comical black and white photography and its effective use of colors, well, you're wrong. von Trier already did that first waaaay years before, with his war-film noir homage films, Europa.

Europa, by far, is von Trier's most straightforward, and less controversial film. That is why, this is, probably one of his most accessible film to date. Again, he proves once again that he is a very talented and very full of flair auteur of our time. Every single scene in Europa is very breathtaking. And The last 20 minutes is pretty much a hitchcockian suspense !
