The Loved Ones 2012,  Unrated)
The Loved Ones
The Loved Ones is a brilliant Australian Horror and easily one of my all-time favourite films thanks to the storyline, characters and the brilliant actors portraying them! Director and Writer Sean Byrne has really created an Aussie gem that no Horror fan should miss out on as we watch Brent enter a world of terror as he is held captive from a crazed Father and his daughter Lola determied to have the ideal prom at home, where Brent is everything she desires! Can Brent escape this sadistic world before its too late?

Robin McLeavy. Where do I start with this talented young actress that has portrayed one of the most evil girls in Horror history! While Xavier Samuel is fantastic as Brent its really Robin that steals the show and she does an outstanding job. Props must also go to John Brumpton that does a smashing job as her equally twisted Father. While the other actors are great also they aren't in comparrison to the three leads that easily steal the show just like they are meant to.

Nothing spells terror more like an innocent high school student held captive at his fellow classmate's ideal prom at home. The idea was just brilliant and portrayed perfectly thanks to such an intriguing storyline and character you both loved and hated at the same time. While obviously being villains I couldn't help but want to find out more about Lola, Daddy and even Bright Eyes as they were such an interesting family, while being totally twisted at the same time. Visually the film also looked fantastic, especially the scenes at the dinner table.

Overall The Loved Ones is a brilliant film and one I would highly reccomend to any Horror fan out there. Its a sick and twisted ride but one you're bound to love, and its certainly a film you won't forget anytime soon!

Orphan 2009,  R)
Orphan
Orphan is a brilliant Thriller about a mysterious little girl called Esther; a character that is bound to have a massive impact on you while watching! Its easily one of my favourite films, if not my all-time favourite.

After losing her third child through a bad pregnancy, Kate and John adopt Esther from an orphanage and she settles into her new home with their other two children Daniel and Max. Soon enough things start to go wrong and Esther always seems to be the one who is there when trouble occurs. Curious, Kate decides to dig deeper into Esther's past and discovers that Esther isn't all that she seems and that she is hiding a deep and dark secret, but Esther is always one step ahead and will make sure that she doesn't get discovered.

We must start with young Isaballe Fuhrman who has portrayed one of the most evil characters of all-time perfectly. This talented young actress surely has a bright future! Vera Farmiga plays Kate, the children's Mother, very well and really shines in the more violent scenes. Peter Sarsgaard also played the role of Kate's husband John well despite the character being so dumfounded to Esther's evil ways. Props must also go to young Aryana Engineer, who doesn't only play deaf character Max, but is deaf in real life also. She is very good in this film!

From start to finish this film will have you on the edge of your seat, especially once these hidden secrets start to get revealed! Orphan is easily one of my favourites of the genre, and now that I have seen it a second time I'm still in love with it. Esther will now join the ranks of many evil film characters as she is just that; pure evil! The film peaks at all the right moments and has everything to keep the viewer hooked and guessing right 'til the very end! The final scenes are also very intense!

Overall Orphan is outstanding and one I would highly reccomend to anyone! I had a feeling it would be good but never expected it to be this great and for me to have it as one of my all-time favourites.

Avatar 2009,  PG-13)
Avatar
Avatar is easily one of the best films I have seen, and another brilliant film from the bright James Cameron. Visually, its stunning, and looks just remarkable on screen. Anyone who has yet to see this film is really missing out on a masterpiece, and its surely an iconic film from the decade that simply can not be missed.

In the year 2154, humans explore the new world that is Pandora, inhabited by an indigenous tribe of people called the Na'vi. Jake Sully takes form in an avatar and joins these people to learn more about their culture and way of life, and falls in love with a Na'vi woman called Neytiri. The Na'vi population comes under threat when Colonel Quaritch wishes to destory their home to salvage a rare and expensive mineral. Now Jake must try and save the people he has been living with while trying to reason with the humans in order to keep peace on Pandora.

Sam Worthington was a perfect choice for Jake Sully, and is a very likeable and at times quite amusing character. I couldn't see many other actors fit for the role like Sam. Zoë Saldana also breathed life into Neytiri and her character was also a favourite of mine. Colonel Quaritch, played by Stephen Lang, was the character you love to hate, and he couldn't have done a better job. It was also nice to see both Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriguez in the film and they were both great for their roles, especially Michelle as Trudy, a tomboy pilot.

In my eyes the film is simply flawless and its hard to pick any faults. While its a rather long film there is hardly a dull moment as there is always something going on. Pandora has so many interesting creatures and wildlife which looked amazing on screen; and discovering all of this was a clear highlight for me. Each animal or plant was unique in it own special way. I also really enjoyed getting to know the Na'vi people and watching them interact. The final scenes were also very exciting to watch!

Overall Avatar will always be a favourite of mine, and one I can't see myself ever getting tired of watching. It's desevred all the success it managed to achieve and I just can not wait for the sequel in the near future!

Chicago 2002,  PG-13)
Chicago
Chicago is one of the best musicals to be released lately thanks to being so creative with a great storyline, stand-out musical numbers and top-notch acting from the cast. It certainly desevred the success its managed to achieve, especially winning 'Best Picture' at the Oscars!

Roxie Hart has just committed murder and is now on death row, so she buys lawyer Billy Flynn to help her win her case and her freedom. Roxie isn't the only woman trying to win her freedom as Velma Kelly is also a cold-hearted killer and doing anything to win over Billy. Roxie's case hits its up's and down's as she tries to win the heart's of Chicago's public, as well as make herself famous at the same time as she aspires to be a stage performer.

Renée Zellweger is brilliant as Roxie Hart, and while she isn't as strong of a performer as Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Velma Kelly, she needed to be softer to fit the role of Roxie. Catherine Zeta-Jones on the other hand is very bold and loud in her role and she plays it perfectly. Richard Gere is also quite convincing as the charming yet coniving Billy Flynn. Queen Latifah also gives a stellar performance as Matron Mama Morton, and really shines in her musical number 'When You're Good To Mama'.

The storyline has everything, and is played out very well with toe-tapping songs to really get you moving in your seat. Stand-out musical numbers include 'Cell Block Tango' and 'We Both Reached For The Gun', as well as the opening number 'All That Jazz'. There is so much to like about this film that it's hard to know where to start, and there's enough there to keep not just musical fans happy, but reach out to others also. Visually the film also looks stunning, especilly during musical performances by the cast.

Overall Chicago is a fantastic musical that I thoroughly enjoyed and I would highly reccomend it to anyone, even if you're not a fan of musicals because you might just be surprised.

Quarantine 2008,  R)
Quarantine
One of my all-time favourite Horror films thanks to being so 'in your face' and realistic with the 'shaky-cam' technique that can sometimes work and sometimes fall flat but it certainly worked here. Angelas and her cameraman Scott enter an appartment that is soon under quarantine as the people living there get sick. It's very fast-paced but this is when it works the best as you feel you are there in the moment with the characters. Overall a highly enjoyable film and I would reccomend it!

Rise of the Planet of the Apes 2011,  PG-13)
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
If this is anything to go by we will be having one hell of a series to look forward to! Instead of being full-on with action we are introduced to baby Caesar, the lead chimp, and we watch him grow to be the independent ape he becomes. The CGI is just amazing, and Andy Serkis is an obvious stand-out as the lead ape Caesar, but James Franco is also great as Caesar's 'Father' Will. Overall this is an amazing film and one of the highlights of 2011, and I just can't wait to see what happens next!

Toy Story 3 2010,  G)
Toy Story 3
Not only will Toy Story fans love the third installment but it will be winning a new age of fans too. There is so much to like about this film and because I grew up with the first two films I really couldn't wait to see it. Much more heartfelt and emotional this time 'round and its great to see everyone back along with the addition of a few new characters. Overall a brilliant film just as good as the first two, and easily one of the best animated films out there, if not the best!
8
Sucker Punch 2011,  PG-13)
Sucker Punch
Just as good as it was the first time I saw it, and I was worried it wouldn't be as its obvious a film like this has more of a 'WOW' effect in a cinema, but it's the storyline as well as the amazing special effects that really draw you in! Emily Browning is great as Baby Doll, who will do whatever it takes to escape the mental asylum she is now in. The 'Inception' type dreaming going on can be confusing so try to enjoy the ride more than think about it, and that's what I did and just loved it!

Scream 1996,  R)
Scream
Scream is the start of the iconic trilogy that's about to get it's fourth installment next month, but this is where it all began back in 1996. From the creative minds of Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson, Scream is the Horror film that put slasher films back on the map thanks to the 'whodunnit' storyline that follows Sidney Campbell, a high school student tormented by a masked killer that terrorizes the small town of Woodsburro. Now its up to Sidney and her friends to unmask the killer before its too late and they end up dead!

Neve Campbell is no stranger to 90's films and this was obviously her big break. She is fantastic as our female lead Sidney Prescott. Like the other teen characters in the film Neve was great for the role as was Skeet Ulrich as her slighty creepy boyfriend Billy. Courteney Cox is also fantasic as news reporter Gale Weathers, and David Arquette is more than likeable as Tatum's (Rose McGowan) brother Dewey Riley. Props also go to Drew Barrymore who really makes a small role really work in the opening scene playing the infamous first victim Casey.

From start to finish you are hooked on the 'whodunnit' storyline and if its the first time watching it you are always kept guessing! Horror films had started to go downhill in the early 90's so when Scream came along the genre was completley reinvented to what it has become today. The cast really make this film work well but its that creative storyline that Kevin Williamson can take full credit for that really made Scream work like it did.

Overall Scream is a fantastic and thrilling slasher flick that any 90's teen should have definitley seen and any Horror fan of today should make sure they do not miss out on! Bring on #4!!!

Scream 4 2011,  R)
Scream 4
Fans of the first three Scream films, especially the first, will be more than pleased with the fourth installment as I absolutley loved it! I was afraid it wouldn't live up to all the hype but boy it certainly did! Sidney, Dewey & Gale are back once again trying to solve another murder mystery case, and once again the killer is after them. Full of thrills, kills and plenty of blood & gore there isn't much this film didn't have! Overall Scream 4 was well worth the wait and I just loved it!

Finding Nemo 2003,  G)
Finding Nemo
Finding Nemo is another successful film from the masterminds of Pixar; and this has to be up there with their great films like the Toy Story series. It would be hard to find someone that wouldn't enjoy this film as there's something for everyone of all ages!

Marlin has just lost his son Nemo after he is taken from divers, so now he's on a journey to get him back. He runs into Dory, a forgetful fish, who helps him after reading on one of the divers mask that Nemo has been taken to Sydney. Meanwhile, Nemo is attempting his own escape from the fish tank he is now living in with the help of Gill, a fish just as determined for freedom. Will Marlin and Dory get to Nemo in time before he is given as a gift, or will Nemo make his own escape first?

While Albert Brooks, who plays Marlin, is the lead voice actor in this film its Ellen DeGeneres, who plays Dory, that steals the spotlight here. Her voice is hilarious as Dory, and Dory could just be one of the most loved Pixar characters in a long time. Willem Dafoe is also perfect as the mysterious Gill, and his dark and sinister voice couldn't of been better for the role. Other highlights in the cast include Vicki Lewis as Deb and Barry Humphries as Bruce the shark.

The general idea and concept is great, and a real touching story as a Father loses his only son. You really feel for these characters, despite the fact they are fish. The characters are so likeable, and the scenery is so bright and colourful that I'm sure the kids would have just loved. It's probably a little scary at times for very young children, but like all great Disney flicks they never stay scary for long. The events of the film all play out at the right time as well to keep you in suspense.

Overall Finding Nemo is another smash hit for Pixar, and is definitley a film no one should miss out on. Apart from the Toy Story series its easily their best work, and any fans of the Pixar films won't want to give this one a miss!

House of Wax 2005,  R)
House of Wax
Horror remakes don't come any better than this and it's been updated perfectly for today's generation. While it has some minor flaws all is forgiven when it's such an interesting concept, especially the mysterious Ambrose town, plus the final scenes are visually quite the treat! Elisha Cuthbert is the stand-out as our female heroine Carly, while Brian Van Holt also shines as the villain duo Bo & Vincent. Overall it's definitely one of my all-time favourites and has been since I first saw it.
13
Hairspray 2007,  PG)
Hairspray
Easily one of my all-time favourite films with such a great cast and catchy songs, plus the films has very important themes and a strong message. Every song will have you tapping your feet while the performances of the cast are just amazing with newcommer Nikki Blonsky perfect as the lead Tracy, while John Travolta gives us something different playing her mother Edna. Its a real improvement on the 1988 original also. Overall its a must-see and a film everyone is surely to enjoy :D
14
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Such a brilliant film thanks to some outstanding performances, especially from Heath Ledger who really brings 'The Joker' to life. Full of non-stop action and some mind-blowing twists and turns, its a massive improvement on any other Batman film and such a joy to watch. It seems the Batman films are now turning into more of a psycological Thriller, especially with 'The Joker' in this one being as crazy and psychotic as he was. Overall a great film that I just loved and I would highly reccomend!
15
Dreamgirls 2006,  PG-13)
Dreamgirls
One of my all-time favourite films thanks to a brilliant cast and storyline blended with some great songs, plus some stand-out performanes from the likes of newcommer Jennifer Hudson to R&B star Beyoncé. From star to finish the mood is set perfectly with the soulful 60's and 70's music as we follow Deena, Effie and Lorell's up's and down's in their music career. There is never a dull moment and the songs are just amazing. Overall a brilliant musical and one I would definitley reccomed :)

Stand by Me 1986,  R)
Stand by Me
Its probably the third or fourth time I've seen it now, but the first time I've really appreciated it as a brilliant film and its now one of my all-time favourites. Its the bond between the four friends, especially Gordy and Chris, that makes this a great film to watch, as well as how likeable these characters really are. The acting is also brilliant and all four lead starts are very impressive. Its a classic 80's film and definitley not one to be missed, and it really is just a joy to watch!
17
Toy Story 2 1999,  G)
Toy Story 2
Such an impressive sequel that managed to suceed the first thanks to having more action, new characters and more locations for the characters to explore. Woody and Buzz are obviously back and this time its a rescue mission as Woddy is kidnapped. Jessie and Bullsye are welcome additions to the film, plus new villains like Al (from Al's Toy Barn) and Evil Emperor Zurg are also great for the film. An improvement on the first and a film not to be missed by any child, and bring on the third I say!
18
The Wizard of Oz 1939,  G)
The Wizard of Oz
Where do you even start to describe how brilliant this film really is? It's a tale that anyone could love no matter how young or old they are, and the fact that it's lasted so long after 70 years is just amazing. The acting is great with Judy Garland the perfect choice as young Dorothy. L. Frank Baum's story of 'The Wizard Of Oz' is truly a great tale and comes across like it in this film. Overall if you have not seen this movie you really are missing out on a wonderful journey.
