The Wicker Man 1974, R)
A bizzare film of pagan rites and burning the good, with Christopher Lee in a wig and dress. The story is excellent, the acting not bad for the seventies, and the ending quite satisfying. The location of filming was gorgeous, with actual buildings and landmarks which add to the overall eerie character of the town and its inhabitants. A great film for a discussion group on relgious beliefs and their conflicts, Catholicism vs. paganism. Defintely more than the box says! |

The Boondock Saints 2000, R)
This is a brilliant film about the driving need of man to protect himself and others from the evils corrupting our society. The two brothers take an Old Testament approach to justice when they begin to execute criminals in the Russian and Italian mafia. Great camera work, a glorious soundtrack and the rustic and real locations of Boston set the stage for the magnificant performances by Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flannery and Willem Defoe. The dark humor and beautiful hyms contrast both sides of good and evil in this film, and brings to the forefront the one-time hotly debated idea of killing in the name of God. This movie can be enjoyed for its messages, its humor, it's action, the character you coem to love, the elation you feel when the bad guys get whacked... It should be a must have in any movie collection. |

American Psycho 2000, R)
When it comes to high society and mas murder... Bateman sits on the throne...well, does crunches on his hardwood floor, but the same thing applies. This movie, an adaptation of Bret Easton Elllis' novel, shows the terror and rage that can manifest intself in the culture of the materially obsessed and emotionally devoid. We have a central character who wishes only to fit in, be a success and have it all. But his spare time is devoted to butchering people and talking about the music of Phil Collins and Whitney Housten. The cast is great with Christian Bale in the lead, Josh Lucas, Chloe Sevigny, Willem Defore (who has yet to make a movie I don't like) and a thumoing 80's soundtrack, which locations from uptight apartments to clustered offices and boardrooms to retro raves and seedy back alleys. This writing for this film is exceptional, the dialogue portraying the modern consumerist viewpoints and its ultimate result in Bale being just like the mother obsessing wig wielding Anthony Perkins of Hitchcock fame, no doubt a little homage from Ellis for the opportunity to reproduce the killer in a more modern setting, where a domineering mother has been replaced with a demanding upscale society that children are being groomed for even now, without the chance for choice. A great film to watch alongside Fight CLub and enjoy a philosophical debate. |
