What can one say in such a teeny little review box? The more times I see this movie, the more I admire, respect, and enjoy it. And, for me, that's one of the marks of greatness in cinema.
This is a work of true genius. I really don't have words to describe how powerful this movie is, and how cinematically stunning! This has instantly become one of my favorite films of all time.
I can't think of a movie that delves more convincingly into madness--individual madness and the madness of a whole society. Career-making performance by DeNiro.
So very good. This movie gets better every time I watch it. I think the somewhat dated special effects distracted me at first. But now all I see is how brilliant the direction is in this film. Hitchcock is, indeed, the Master.
I saw this again at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute (I love that place!). One of the greatest movies ever! There's humor and wit, but there's also a wealth of sadness and tragedy. Norma Desmond was the role of a lifetime for any actress with the guts to play her, and Gloria Swanson was simply amazing.
It's not an easy viewing experience. But the movie is powerful, well acted, and well directed. Few movies affect me as viscerally as this one does...just about every time I see it.
