I'd give it six if I could. I don't really know how to critique a movie. I just know how they make me feel. No movie has ever impacted me as significantly as this one. I loved movies before I saw this in '77, but movies became my passion after I saw it.
I will admit that the first viewing of this movie had me wondering what all of the fuss was about but once I saw the entire trilogy, I cannot help but to dub this (along with the other two) a masterpiece and cinema par excellence. The story is so lush and rich that if you watch the three movies you actually believe that you've gone through everything that the heroes have gone through. Amazing. If history is something that is studied two hundred years from now, these movies will resonate even then.
That isn't my honest score. I personally rate it at close to 5 but that is simply because I saw this as a 14 year old and it blew me away back then. So I guess I like it for sentimental reasons. Actually, the movie is mediocre at best.
This movie pushed the envelope of CGI back in '93 to the degree that I didn't know how those special FX could possibly have been done. Now that CGI is in every other movie, the effects no longer amaze but back then this movie was breathtaking. It is still one of my all time favorites.
This is truly and outstanding film. If you know the history behind the late, great Robert Johnson it makes it all the more awesome to watch. The showdown between Lighning Boy and Scratch is out of this world. If you've never seen this, you are in for a treat.
This is one of the all time greatest low budget movies ever made. LOL! It couldn't have cost much to produce this thing but it is one of the best music movies (not to be confused with "musical") ever made. Prince is out of this world and so is Apollonia. I will admit that it isn't the most politically correct movie in the world. Morris Day throws a woman in a dumpster. The Kid makes a fool out of Apollonia by tricking her into jumping into a lake and then caps it off by slapping her silly. Morris calls Prince a "long head faggot". If you can get past that foolishness (and some horrid acting), it is a great ride.
It almost makes me weep that River Phoenix died so tragically young. I believe that he was a phenominally good actor. Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio ended up with roles they wouldn't have gotten if he were still alive. Wesley Crushers, I mean Wil Wheatons acting was very good and so was Jerry O'Connell and that Corey dude. This was a movie about friendship and if there was a better one made, I haven't seen it yet.
