I wanted to be Idgy from the moment she jumped off the train, but it was the fact that she snagged Mary-Louise Parker that really made me envious. Tremendous story about friendship between women, no matter how you view the relationship between Ruth and Idgy.
It's the three stars in this, Dean, Wood, and Mineo, that make this "picture" unforgettable. Read about the back scenes antics for an even closer look at these three incredible stars- all three of which died way before their time.
Ok, so it IS one of my all time faves, but it gets half a star knocked off for stupid cameos. Ted Danson? Really, Spielberg? Otherwise, the best WW2 movie EVER!
This movie is so good, it makes me want to cry out of pure joy. I'm not kidding. It is the most underrated film in history. There is no other movie about teenagers that even comes close. No, not even the freaking Breakfast Club!
Is it better than Wayne's famous "The Searchers"? I don't know, but Montgomery Clift is just so perfect in his role against Wayne. I think that's what makes the slight difference.
If you have a weak stomach, you may want to stay away. If not, then see this weird little masterpiece right away. Natalie Portman's first leading role at, what, 11 years old??? And already you can see that she's brilliant.
There will never be another movie like this again, because audiences now are too stupid to get it. Thank God, I guess, for the cynicism and broodiness of the early 90's.
Just like E.T. three years earlier, I walked out of the theatre after seeing Back to the Future knowing that I wanted to tell stories for a living when I grew up. And 24 years later, I still could never come up with a concoction like this one.
