I was incorrectly led to believe that I wouldn't like this movie. Well, I didn't like it - I LOVED IT!
I don't know that it will appeal to any guys but for me, it took me back to that time of new love and being naughty and the thrill of it all. I'm gonna buy it and watch it over and over again! I hope they make the other three books in that series into movies too!
If I could give this movie 10 stars I would. It has HUMOR! Thrills! ACTION!!! Suspense! Good vs. Evil! Not only does it never stop, it doesn't even slow down!
GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE! You won't be disappointed ~
I had no idea Adam Sandler had it in him to do a movie this profoundly touching and meaningful. This is his absolute best, thus far!! One I will watch MANY times over!!!
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this movie. It isn't pulse quickening action adventure or sordid sex , just a wonderful story (with OUTSTANDING SCENERY) that gives just the slightest tug at your heartstrings.
This is a movie I will watch over and over again!
I was a fat kid, became the wife of a fat husband and a mother of fat kids. I love the empowerment and overall acceptence of WHO we are, not WHAT we are, portrayed in this movie. A feel good movie if ever there was one!
I rented this movie because I love Tracey Ullman. I didn't care much for her chracter in this one though.
I'm not a big fan of Michelle Pfeiffer at all but she nailed the part of tightly wound, mildly unbalanced single mom and divorcee of Jon Lovitz in this movie. She plays Barbies with her tween daughter in a most endearing fashion. I couldn't believe they had cast her as someone so sweet and vulnerable. But she did the role proud!
However... I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Paul Ruud in the role of her slightly off center suitor. I laughed out loud several times in this movie and will likely purchase it to watch repeatedly. That is how much I LOVE this move!
John Lovitz' role could have been larger but his typical weirdness and humor shines through in his moments on screen.
Only part of this movie I HATED was the character of the secretary/assistant to Michelle Pfeiffer's character. She was a lying, scheming, conniving über bitch and I wanted to go into the movie just so I could beat the sh*t out of her.
Other than that, this is a sleeper that never actually played in the theaters where I am. I almost didn't rent it because I'd never even heard of it. I'm soooo glad I didn't miss this fun flick! I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a movie this much!!! Who knew?
What a great movie! I'm 44 but I will be 60+ someday (God willing) and I may yet be a widow - who knows? I'd like to believe that there will be groups and people out there like the Boynton Beach Bereavement Club should I arrive at that point in my life.
There were a few parts that made me laugh out loud but most of it was just a good story. If you're looking for a laugh riot or something to keep you on the edge of your seat with suspense or action.... keep looking. This isn't it. But it's a great movie to watch when you feel insecure about getting old and want to see the lighter, as well as the darker side of aging and being without your lifetime partner.
I'd love to see more movies like this. We NEED to see aging as a natural part of life to be embraced instead of shunned. Unfortunately storylines and movies of this genre are few and far between.
:::SPOILER::: When Harry tells Jack that sex with an older woman might be a little weird because you were used to the one you grew old with and you've never seen another older woman naked it made me think about that, for the first time. How strange and foreign must it be to find yourself looking at a new mature lover when you only saw the one person you had always loved and grown old with looking back at you through eyes of love? I'm thinking there are worse things than being old and single!
Wow - the chemistry between Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand is amazing! They made me laugh and rally for them and even want to be them! I hate their politics but I can't deny their extensive talents!!!
The TV show can't hold a candle to this pairing of Walter Mattheau and Jack Lemmon. A priceless movie I happily made a part of my personal collection and watch often!
Oye Cochinas! Four gorgeous older gents play it out as astronauts with a last chance space mission. Does it get any better? For the younger set, it probably does but for this middle-aged vamp, I don't think I could take it any hotter ~ These oldies but goodies fan sexual embers into full blown flame!
If you're young, wait until you're older to fullly appreciate this gem. If you're 40 or beyond, get ready to have your world ROCKED by 4 of the most talented and attractive actors ever to grace the screen, ALL AT ONCE!
I love this movie anyway, but the fact that Vivi is a visual clone of my older sister Vivian, makes it one I own and watch often. Viv and I live 1200 miles apart and don't see each other often enough to suit me ~
Infidelity notwithstanding I love this movie!!! They fall in love with each other (and stay in love over decades) while still loving their respective spouses and choosing to remain MARRIED, if not faithful to them.
I sooo want to be the wife - not of Richard Gere but of the character he plays in this movie. Oooohhhh, to dance in the arms of the man I adore... I LOVE this movie!!!! My husband hates it ~sigh~
This is in my personal collection. I don't watch it that often and every time I do watch it, I wonder why that is? A WONDERFUL movie to watch MANY times over!!!
Just when I thought Cuba Gooding Jr. couldn't get any funnier. Wow! What a gift this man has - his humor is but a fraction of his talent, abilities and appeal!!!
Lame reason but I love watching a man with so many sons. Guess maybe I compare him to my man and our sons, though in competely different circumstances.
I LOVE Dean Martin in this movie! Ricky Nelson is no slouch either. Just a fun movie to watch and enjoy with plenty of popcorn and maybe some beer or soda.
The whole premise of this movie intrigued me. Working out your salvastion AFTER this life, petitioning Heaven for admittance. My son recommended it to me. Good call, Owen!
The theme of acceptance continues. Cuba Gooding did a fabulous job with this part. made me laugh, made me cry, made me want to know the man that this story is all about!
A silly bit of fluff that made me laugh my butt off. Not to be taken seriously - rather to be enjoyed as it was intended. Suspenseful yes, but mostly just a good story with periodic injections of humorous dialogue.
Wow, it's patriotic and gets your blood pumping while it makes you laugh at some of the things Will Smith says. His comedic timing and delivery are still on point!
Gotta LOVE this one! Great casting, storyline and direction ~
Still trying to decide if I like this one or Independence Day better. I chose this one because I love Tommy Lee Jones and his deadpan "K" puts this one over the top!
This movie would not be even half as good without the additions of Tom Arnold and Joan Cusack!
Hugh Grant and Julianne Moore make a surprisingly good couple.
Heartwarming! AND funny throughout!
Instead of having a story about how this less than studly guy is so grateful to the beautiful woman for having sex with him that he'll spend his entire life kissing her ass, he simply tried to make himself worthy of being a father to the child he sired in that one night drunken tryst.
My favorite line in the movie :::warning - SPOILER::: was when he asked his own father if he had any regrets about becoming a father and, subsequently, a grandfather. His Dad (Harold Ramis) says simply, "Son, you are the best thing that ever happened to me." Ben hangs his head and says, :"Wow, now I just feel really bad for you." Humility plays well in this one. A VERY good story with a HEA (happily ever after) ending.
I've seen this one so many times, I can recite it. Can't say exactly what it is that holds me captive but it's one I wore out the first copy of and had to get another!
Easily the best work ever done on film, on the subject of Asperger Syndrome!
Also the best foreign movie I've ever seen!!!
I would love to see this made in America with actors our younger generation knows, relates to and has adulation for, but I'm not sure we have any young english speaking actors that could pull off a part this intense and make it as believable as this is. If they could, I'd love to see it shown in schools, churchs, social clubs and anywhere else where aspers are made to try and fit in!
Greg Timmermans NAILED the part of someone with AS so well, I wonder if he has familial contact with an asper?
I can't think of a single thing that could have made this movie any better. The best and most intensely moving flick I have seen in a very long time!
I absolutely LOVE this movie! I've long been a fan of Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman and they do NOT disappoint in this fine film.
I can't think of a single thing that would or could have made this any better. It began with Jane Austen writing a beautiful story and then into the hands of Ang Lee to turn it into something as pleasant to watch as it is to read. Kudos to all the cast who made it VERY real to me!
Another WONDERFUL take on Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice! I never tire of them, though there are many. Each one has something of it's own to offer. This one is no exception to that.
Keira Knightly was PERFECT in the role of Lizzie Bennet, the second eldest of five daughters. Brenda Blethyn played Mrs. Bennet, their mother, SO well that I didn't even realize it was her until the credits rolled.
Judi Dench was positively WICKED as Lady Catherine.
Donald Sutherland played Mr. Bennet as a man resigned to life with a VERY nervous wife and a gaggle of giggling daughters whose greatest joy (learned from their mother, no doubt) comes from group eavesdropping with ears pressed to closed doors. His british accent is VERY understated and eloquent.
There is so much to love and NOTHING to dislike in this version.
Well worth the 2+ hours viewing time ~ Perfectly cast ~ I'll watch it again and again!!
This won't suit everyone's taste but it was perfectly suited to mine! My husband loved it too, and that's rare, indeed ~
Harvey Shine doesn't seem to be a bad guy, just a little too self-absorbed to be aware of a significant part of his life going on without him. His only daughter is getting married and he must fly to London for the wedding.
When he arrives, he realizes he is an outcast as all of the wedding party excepting him have been put up in a rental house by the mother (and stepfather) of the bride.
To make matters worse, he is on the verge of losing his job and is taking and making phone calls during the rehearsal dinner to salvage what he can of his life's work. His family sees him as STILL being obsessed with the wrong things. His daughter gets him alone and tells him that her stepfather has been the one present in her life over the past few years and she has asked her stepfather to give her away.
Harvey tells her he understands but is devastated and says he will stay for the wedding but must leave immediately after so he won't be staying for the reception. More hurt feelings...
He misses the flight that would take him home and can't obtain another flight out until the following day. Discouraged, he heads for the airport lounge for a few drinks. There he meets Kate Walker, the woman he rudely snubbed coming into Heathrow, when she was taking surveys.
Harvey and Kate begin talking, and then eating, and then walking out together and she tells Harvey that he MUST attend his daughters reception. It would be unforgivable for him to miss it. He agrees to go ONLY if she will accompany him.
From the beginning, you can see that they are well matched, bringing out the best in one another. But at every turn, there is some circumstance that seeks to impede them being together.
In the end, the guy gets the girl, despite her reluctance, and off they go, to walk again, presumably into the sunset.
This one isn't saccharine or pretentious and doesn't seek to make you believe the impossible dream. It does take you on a journey of what it's like to be aging in a world obsessed with youth and passing you by, wanting to discard you.
A VERY romantic story that is heavy handed with pragmatism. What I like most is the notion of confronting your less than ideal circumstances, then reaching out for what you want and refusing to pull back, until you have obtained it! Just a lovely film, showing the joy that can happen when we refuse to let our circumstances determine our fate!
