Jules and Jim 1962,  Unrated)
Jules and Jim
the closest a director has ever come to completly and utterly depciting the way I feel about women. and he's French! so fitting! more than ever I have realized I am destined to this film and those like it, as it is purely brilliant in every way. the cinematography, the manner in which it was written, down to the costumes. the comedy. the sense of humour! everything. absolutely fantastic film.

Songs From the Second Floor 2000,  Unrated)
Songs From the Second Floor
The Swedish director Andersson really brings hell to earth in this dystopia themed movie that reminded me of 'The Weekend'.
3
The Graduate 1967,  PG)
The Graduate
straight out of Santa Monica College, Hoffman is a master in one of the best movies ever made.
4
Easy Rider 1969,  R)
Easy Rider
The quintessential counter-culture mixed with road trip movie. IN a way, one would have had to have done drugs to get truly understand the message of Easy Rider which is basically: 'we live the way we want or die' or to dig deeper: 'right, so we've done all this supposed soul searching, now what?'
"We Blew it Billy" is one of the most powerful lines in film history.

To quote the hip-hop group Clipse, 'tomorrow ain't promised so we live for the moment.'
5
Billy Liar 1963,  Unrated)
Billy Liar
it?s the narcissistic writer movie of the early 60?s with hints of existentialism because everything is so absurd that he has to lie to make his life more exciting for himself and in the meantime gets himself involved in such calamity. I can understand why it considered British New Wave although it is very different than French new wave, it is a true England story about fitting into proper society in proverbial England. It?s about having ot fulfill social norms despite being the dreamer with the imagination who doesn?t serve in such society. It is about making up fibs, white lies, and living in a never-ending dream. Instead of being sarcastic Billy is overly enthusiastic. Does it serve him?

Fantastic Planet 1973,  PG)
Fantastic Planet
this film deserves more than a one sentence review. but if I must:
the most socially aware animated film ever made, and the greatest story in an animated film i've ever seen.
7
Sleeper 1973,  PG)
Sleeper
I loved Sleeper! I'm a huge fan of future interpretation films, and as off as this one was it was still barrels of fun and Diane Keaton young tickles my fancy like no other. interesting how so little digital mechanisms. it was basically the 70's with fancier stuff. WRONG...but still I loved it.

Style Wars 1983,  Unrated)

Billy the Kid 2007,  Unrated)
Billy the Kid
Billy is not a normal 15 year old. In fact, if he grew up with money and was able to get 'tested' he would probably be called 'autistic' or 'ADHD' but Billy, the son of a crack-head trucker who abandoned him and his mother at a young age, in a small town in Maine is just considered 'unique'. and well, its completely OK because every small town needs there weird kid. Some wierd kids, learn they are weird and sort of play into it. I'm not sure if Billy, a man of poem and prose fell into this. He falls in love quickly but would certainly agree with Shakespeare 'better to have loved and lost then never love at all'. Billy is almost a real life Napoleon Dynamite mixed with the main character from the book 'Perks of Being a Wallflower'. My favorite thing about this documentary, and the character Billy in general is his ability to learn from his past, learn from his mistakes, and craft himself into a better human being because of it. For example, because his dad beat his mother he is against a man hitting a woman by all means, he won't even hurt a girl in a video game. I hope Billy finds a rad crowd and some cool people to hang with once he gets to college. He deserves it.

Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
I love historical fiction. I love devious dialogue. I love cinema. and Tarantino's 2009 masterpiece is a movie that revolves around all three. The film, while being the first movie to acceptably turn one of the most intense set of events in history, and the subject of many of the heaviest films to date into a comedic, dramatic, and tastefully violent movie in a way only Quentin could pull off. Wonderbar! This is my generation's Pulp Fiction, and one of my favorite movies of this decade.

Don't worry about Mike Meyers, this is an ensemble piece and everyone is fabulous. The show stealer, however, is the Austrian born, Christoph Waltz, who deserves an non-academy equivalent of an Academy Award as the cunning detective who burns Pitt's tremendous performance down.

Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002,  R)
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
wonderful story, great cinematography, brilliant acting... one of the best foreign films I've ever seen. classic!
12
The Science of Sleep 2006,  R)
The Science of Sleep
an incredible journey into consciousness, the thin line between the dream world and reality, and a inventor/syvant lost in translation and good looks and being 'creative' in a non-creative world. do you think the main character is somewhat skitzophrentic having paranoid illusions of the girl being in love with him? its a very American way of looking at it, since they see psycho-analysis different in France. but who knows? the movie obviously makes me think and that's why its the best movie i've seen since 'The Diving Bell & The Butterfly.'
13
Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) 2007,  PG-13)
Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)
a movie filled with passion only found in French cinema. Predominantly about the will to live, depicted from the perspective of a man completely paralyzed physically yet immaculate mentally. indie fucks like me love this type of movie because of it's emotional uplifting, dark humor, romantic interludes and intelligent qualities. Oh, and French culture totally trumps .
14
Sult (Hunger) 1966,  Unrated)
Sult (Hunger)
It?s a film about debilitated sense perception. It?s a song about madness, but not any madness the fine lines of it, it?s a painting of paranoia, it?s a playfield of a game that one outsider in 1890 is playing against himself, and the small Norwegian town he eventually gives in to and loses it with a mischievous smile.
15
Citizen Kane 1941,  PG)
Citizen Kane
OMG! Such an O.G. (original) Mass-Culture critique movie. I understand why people consider it the greatest film, and how complex it is. Beyond that, the movie dives deep down into life's true satisfations: be it money, fame, or respect and the many fantasies someone can convince themselves of if they have the power.
16
Oldboy 2004,  R)
Oldboy
one of the most captivating movies I have ever seen, Oldboy goes places I've never witnessed in western cinema. Ready for a mind-fuck?
17
A Clockwork Orange 1971,  R)
A Clockwork Orange
Kubrick is probably my all-time favorite. this movie has such an interesting story and the main character Alex is so brilliantly written and fabulously played.
18
Ferris Bueller's Day Off 1986,  PG)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
another one of my all-time favs. came out the year I was born, obviously meant to be a fan. who doesn't feel like/ want to be Ferris in high school? if you haven't seen it, rent it now!
19
I Heart Huckabees 2004,  R)
I Heart Huckabees
a movie about Existential detectives??? Count me in!
"the inevitability of human drama". A movie Wes Anderson would have directed, but luckily he stepped aside to let David O. Russell take over this 'must see twice' to get flick. an self-proclaimed existentialist 'one must lose himself to find himself' fan of philosophy and pseudo-intellect like myself digs movies like this. the second time, at least.

the film can be summed up by a single Prince quote:
"So when u call up that shrink in Beverly Hills U know the one - Dr Everything'll Be Alright. Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how much of your mind, baby...
If u don't like the world you're living in
Take a look around u
At least u got friends"
-Prince 'Let's Go Crazy'

Trainspotting 1996,  R)
Trainspotting
in a sense, Trainspotting is a modern day 'Clockwork Orange'. Vicious, mischevious and a strong moral: RUGS FUCK EVERYTHING UP every second of this movie made me understand hipsters and despise heroin more and more. A

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 1998,  R)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
easy to see how it is embraced by drug culture in such a positive way. the drug experience is always tainted and this is a cleverly told story of an original fiend.
22
Children of Men 2006,  R)
Children of Men
the best apocalyptic/ dystopia moves made in a long time. look at the background as much as possible and the love animals have for Clive Owen's character throughout the movie. is it a Christian parallel? whatever it is, this is maybe the best movie of the '00's
23
Good Night, And Good Luck 2005,  PG)
Good Night, And Good Luck
classy, great plot, superb acting. Clooney is actually a great director. I have so much respect for him after this.
24
Watchmen 2009,  R)
Watchmen
Another thing new age doubters/viewers of Watchmen must remember is that it was written in 1985. A predominately fluffy and light time that brought us the John Cusak series of movies and 'Girls just Want to have Fun'. The author Alan Moore sets up a parallel universe where Nixon is still in office in 1985 and America is still stuck in a McCarthy Era Nuclear DeathTime scare. The film focuses on the effects of a consumer culture gone haywire and depicts how technology has the potential of destroying civilization moving at its rapid speed and how capitalism may not be the answer despite it working for some, such as the benevolent villain of the film: Adrian Veidt.
The movie appeals to cynics like me who don?t usually dig the fantastic super-hero climbing walls thing unless its presented in a sarcastic way, and Watchmen borderlines nihilism especially in the character of Edward Blake aka The Comedian.

Some may say the music was too much, and the usage of the original 'Hallelujah' known to the world by the Jeff Buckley cover, performed here by its writer Leonard Cohen threw the film overboard in one of the most delectable sex scene?s of the 00?s. The music used, all pre-1985 songs (except of course the awful Chemical Romance cover of 'Desolation Row' at the ending credits) are as powerful as the images presented at the beginning of the film through montages to American Culture. For example, 'Sound of Silence' by Simon & Garfunkel and 'The Times They Are A-Changin' by Bob Dylan are as representational as the expressionist artists of Germany during World War I and the famous kiss known to the world as the return of the army after victory in WWII that is manipulated brilliantly in Watchmen watch here: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vCyqT5Oq3Y) the triumphant wailing of Jimi Hendrix's guitar at the climax of the film, Jimi who was considered the black Dylan for a good part of his career, also who said he felt like he wrote 'All Along the Watchtower' sums up the essence of the troublesome and manic feel of the entire film.
I am a massive fan of Parallel Universe hypothetical situations, possibly because I wish I was in one but regardless, for any historical fiction fan or a person who considers themselves weary of the times Watchmen is a Must See.

The Five Obstructions
brilliant. it's one of those that any film fan Must See to cement themselves as worthy.

American Beauty 1999,  R)
American Beauty
Definitely one of the best movie's made in my generation. Spacey is phenomenal and it's gotta be the best script of the late 90's.
27
The Man Without a Past 2002,  PG-13)
The Man Without a Past
Technicolor dream that could never have been created in the US, this movie is silly fantastical yet superb
-------------------------------
the classic plot of a man who forgets everything. the story of a driven man who finds success living in a shipping crate knowing nothing about his past. but still creates his future and finds love in the process. great movie, a must see if you dig foreign films.
28
Edipo re (Oedipus Rex) 1967,  Unrated)
Edipo re (Oedipus Rex)
Passolini's excellent interpretation of Sophocles' legendary play that is possibly one of the most important pieces in art history.
29
Control 2007,  R)
Control
quite boring, but it needed to be to convey the circumstances. Ian was bored and his life reflects that, great movie. black and white was a good choice.
30
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure 1989,  PG)
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
