Requiem for a Dream 2000, R)
Extremely disturbing film about how people will go so far to satisfy their addiction and sacrifice their dreams to repeat the same thing over and over again until the vicious loop breaks them beyond any morality and sanity. This is no doubt one of the greatest inspired film ever made. It's so dark, so sad, so disturbing, so real, so unreal, so philosophical, so unforgetable and so hardswallow. I also thought this movie has a very psychologically detrimental effect due to its repetitiveness. I was so silently depressed I had to watch a cartoon just to get out of the depressive state of mind. |

American Gangster 2007, R)
The real bad, evil gangster is often the one you expect to fall first. You think the one on the top is ever going to fold, then you're wrong in this movie. The most cutthroat Blue Magic founder turned informat Frank Lucas will never fold. If you turn against him, you'll die before you can blink your eyes. And he doesn't give a crap about nothing. |

If it can make me sob, it can make anyone cry. The first time I watched it, I had to pause the film 5 times to take a breather and continue. No one can escape its sadness, ever. This is by far the best saddest and heartbreaking unde - film in anime history, or should I say, in history. It will make you cry even when you watch the trailer. |

Suicide Club 2002, R)
People commit suicide in mass and in happiness is not only shocking and twisted, it's sick. And that's what this movie is ALL about. endless suspense, gore, peeling skins and tons of blood, philosophy and questions on life and death... I can't but wonder how important this movie is telling us about the societies we live in. It's as if all the subliminal messages and the gothic song from Genesis (Rolly) really started to hypnotizing me and made me also want to happily commit suicide at one point. |

Aoki Ôkami: chi hate umi tsukiru made (Genghis Khan: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea) 2007, R)
"The Blue Wolf: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea" (2007) I think is the international title of this movie. Not even sure if this is the one with Takashi Sorimochi (GTO the movie, 13 Kaidan "Thirteen Steps") but the name of the director is correct. The movie is about the life of Temujin becoming Genghis Khan and unified the entire Mongolia. Filmed in actual Mongolian grassfield, the panorama shots is as amazing as the characters themselves. Deeply concentrating on the possible inner being of Genghis Khan and how he protected his family clan while showing his ruthless side. This is a Japanese film, not a Mongolian film. Lots of Japanese culture is there still. (Such as the samurai way of talking, quick movement to hold woman.) Lots of comical moments. The film is mostly concentrated into whether Zuchi is Temujin's biological son and Temujin is Esukhei's biological son or not which is a little drag and plus some of the historical account is inaccurate--So don't hope to learn history from this film. Zuchi didn't die that early and Tooril is supposed to be killed by the Naimans, not Jamukha. I was hoping to watch Temujin's entire conquests till he dies. |

A film that cuts right through a mind of a street-smart old time gangster. We can see how Charles made his decisions and mistakes he made and how everything catches on at the end. One of the greatest gangster movie of all time! Almost made me shed tears at the end. There is a Carlito in each and everyone of us. |

Black 2005, Unrated)
Based on the story of Helen Keller, the story follows the girl like Keller, an extremely difficult role to act, going all the way to college with so much struggle until her mentor became really old and suffer from Alzheimer. Many real teaching methods have been applied to the film. It's good for people who wish to become a teacher or a family counselor in the future. A must watch! |

If I Were for Real is truly an moving film about a true story that took place in Shanghai. A man became faked official's son to take bribes from fawning underlings. Eventually he was caught. Alam Tam won the Golden Steed (Or Horse) Award for this movie. The movie is so politically provoding, it was banned in Hong Kong and 100% in Mainland China. It was written by three imprisoned Shanghai writers. |

Tear-jerking. One of the most recommanded film by me. Many foreign elements unknown to the Occidental world such as tradition to pass down family's secret skill unto sons, the working force of the society, and one's own sons only. Nonetheless, the emotion and the art is much appreciated and louder than color. A must watch! |

Yuen Ling-yuk (Centre Stage)(The Actress)(The New China Woman) 1992, Unrated)
The film is based on a biopic of the silent film goddess, a legendary Chinese actress of the 30's. Ruan Ling Yu is a link of the lost Chinese black and white genre and the current cinemagraphy. Many Chinese silent film were either unknown, lost or not well preserved. This film can be quite educating when it comes to Chinese film history. Maggie Cheung's performance deserves an Oscar. The flow of the film can be quite confusing nevertheless it's still a good documentary-liked melodrama. Kinda like the movie Ed Wood. |

The Pursuit of Happyness 2006, PG-13)
It's funny how I can related to both the son and the father. I've been homeless when I was young and now I am again trying to believe in the pursuit of happiness also. This film surely speaks the truth about millions of American folks out there trying to livin' it large when situations are still at large. Some people might feel that how could this guy let his child sleep in the shelter and public restrooms with him. But note that the child's blood is thicker than water. Even if the father refuse to let him go with him, the child will still rather live in the shelter with his father. Only people who have lived through this would understand exactly what I'm talking about. And besides, it's rather better to give your best shot at something you might have a chance of getting than to live a life that is stucked in a loophole situation--The rent, the debts, the endless butt-kissing and failure to get paid and constant fighting over financial problem with your love one with no moral support whatsoever. The feeling deep inside is very complicated to describe and it was portraited quite well. Don't give up your dream or chance to be bigger than life. That's what many people fail to see in life. I believe this movie is more than just a movie that you can toss it back into the back of your mind because this is more like a wake up call for lots of people who watched also this movie. People deserves to be better, if they are better. And for those who aren't, they should at least try to get better instead of sleeping on the sofa clicking TV channels, chatting online chasing girl and smoke weed and pot all day, all night, everyday. If there a dream and one should try to chase the dream and don't let people keep you down because they fail to chase their dream! |

When a Man Loves a Woman 1994, R)
A perfect "happily ever after", humorous relationship and an incredibly romantic spontaneous spark constantly flying in their lives that seem to have no end finally hit an end when the woman needed to have her booze to keep up with the laugh and fun. And then when all the fun disappeared, the man is still there to take care of her and help her overcome her alcoholism. I believe romance plays a major role in marriage life but not a fake romance like candlelight dinner nightly and world travel four times a year. The true romance happens when the person still sticks around and support you to the fullest and keep whispering in your ear, "I will make sure you are being taken care of in every aspect in your life, as you would mine." This movie deserves alot of attention from all the marriage couples to reexamine the value of their marriage and to realize what it really meant when one exchange each other's wedding ring. |

Highly recommanded!! Djimon Hounsou was an all out emotionally overpowering actor in this film without restrain and no exaggerated threatrical act. The movie is very educational and action-packed about countries being eaten away by ruthless corrupt governments and rebel forces. L.D. is again a great performance portraiting an ex-soldier in Africa. The movie is so strongly imprinted the suffering of the people that people like us living in well-to-do countries need to think twice when purchasing a diamond, or even thinking about it. |

a tear-jerking football movie that will touch even people who don't like football. The movie isn't about football really though the it's the center of the matter. It's about how to put a sad past behind us yet continue on with the strength given from the past with a little extra push from an oddly ever-hopeful, happy-go-lucky, modest yet extremely intelligent football coach. I really liked the the BGMs. |

Pretty Woman 1990, R)
When I was in Taiwan, I've heard of this movie and it was "the talk in town". It was "The Movie" and it still is today. In Chinese, the movie's titled "A Sparrow Becomes Phoenix" which I think is a much more suitable title than Pretty Woman. As soon as the movie starts, most people would probably start thinking a hooker doesn't deserve such love, specially when the man is richard-gere-finky with lots of greenbacks (Another one of his playboy role, yet again.). Every girl has a pipe dream just like this--of a knight wearing a shining armor come to her rescue out of the tower of teardrops. Although the movie has a very questionable ethic but it gives perhaps a gleaming strand of light for all those who are indeed walking in the tunnel of darkness as of now. A thought of "maybe one day I can really meet someone like so" gives much strength and hope for the people who can assimilate with Vivian's vividly vicious life. Nobody wants to live a dispised life; the falsely independence people seek will put people into such life. Not many girls would want to be known as a hooker though we often seen it on talk shows such as the Jerry Springer's. We can see that clearly when Vivian (Roberts) showed concern that there might be "clients" at the party. That is the exact portrait where she showed her dependency and weakness. The movie almost has a very Christian or Samaritan feel to it in the broader sense that God's loving mercy covers all filth of the world and endures the sins of mankind. Not only so, the man, who was a cutthroat businessman and who is in a way a more nasty character though highly respected due to his evil wealth, is somehow changed by this woman. So, needless to say Vivian has a mystifying quality to change a man's attitude, for good, or for the worse. With that being said, a man feels fulfilled when he feels needed and Gere's character is constantly fulfilling her every need and beyond. And beyond all the turmoil, inner and outer struggles and all the complications and controversies they have brought unto themselves, the key of the entire movie is that it must have been love. It must have been love or otherwise none of them would change their ways. And as long as they change from sparrows who has fragile bodies and souls to gigantic and glorious phoenixs burning in love, everything that has come to past will eventually be consumed away. |

Ang Lee's rarely known martial art film. Sihung Lung (Eat, Drink, Men, Women) acted as a tai-chi master working quietly in Chinese restaurant until he finally was forced to use his tai-chi. Unable to speak English yet always understand the heart of men. Several culture clash created some comical moments that's true in its own sense. It will make you burst out laughter while your stomach is praying this movie is over. THAT'S HOW GOOD THIS MOVIE IS! The shots were great and the actors were excellent as Ken Wakanabe performed one of his proudest. GOSH. I bet those people who watched it in the theatre couldn't wait the movie is over and RUSH to a noodle shop and EAT. The point of this movie is about what's the best food and how to eat them. The ending was profoundly deep. |
