It's all about the infinite beauty, and the powerlessness of men. A truly remarkable film, Kubrick's imagination was just so great. Fucking love this film, is atmospheric and unique.
Horror that keeps building the intensity with a result that blows your mind. if anyone has listened to the score, they know the music is scary by itself, so how could the film not be. Fortunately, Kubrick's imagery is more than terrifying.
This film is THE most beautifully ever shot. Not to mention that it is a film that speaks to some of man's darkest suffering and you really do have a film of true power. As to the mixture of humour with darkness, that's a device to relieve the tension so the director can build it up again, Hitchcock did it also. Why do John Ford's films last even though they are definetly of their time. Because he is a true artist.
The classiest but also maybe the scariest horror out there. Mix that with the way Ridley Scott shot it, and Jerry Goldsmith's score, and you have one of the greats. Unmissable.
Before I saw Verigo, this was my favurite piece of Hitchcock. From the characters to the camerwork, it really is all there. Even the storyline, has such a strikingly black sense of humour, which is surprising gven the year the film was made. It's the tye of film that anyne can enjoy. It's undeniably from the 4os, but it has not dated, well worth your time.
One of my all time favourites. The sense of mystery and spirituality created is unlike anything else out there. When I first saw the scene where the boats come into shore for the first time, it was like a religious experience.
This film is incredible and a total surprise for Tony Scott.
And no it's not vacuous. There's a lott going on about death and aging, you can just feel the atmosphere wrap around. The way he uses editing to strike ideas is amazing.
Amazing cinematography, editing, music, atmosphere, sound. A unique and important film.
