Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) 1954,  Unrated)
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai)
Simply put, this is the greatest film ever made. Clocking in at over three hours and forty minutes, Kurosawa does to film what Michelangelo did to the Sistine Chapel. Perfect in every way, this is more than another hack-and-slash samurai picture. It is an engrossing and powerful drama that completely takes charge and doesn't let up for anything. No words can describe this film's sheer beauty and magnitude. You truly are doing yourself a disservice by not seeing it for yourself.

2001: A Space Odyssey 1968,  G)
2001: A Space Odyssey
It's more than just a sci-fi. It's the pinnacle of "good science fiction," as director Stanley Kubrick himself put it. Teamed with author extraordinaire Arthur C. Clarke, the film makes a powerful statement about mankind and its desires: to create, to destroy, and ultimately, to evolve. You must see this film if you are at all a fan of science fiction or good drama.

Letters from Iwo Jima 2006,  R)
Letters from Iwo Jima
To say the very least, I wept. The best WWII picture since SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, and an excellent message from the Japanese point-of-view. Plus, it stars the great Ken Watanabe! You simply cannot lose with this one.

Eraserhead
Disturbing, strange, eerie, grotesque: the list of adjectives goes on and on, but when you begin to understand the dedication David Lynch had while making this film over the course of six years, you can certainly appreciate this bizarre sci-fi/fantasy/horror.

Zombies! British women! Hilarious jokes! Zombies! Obviously, I adore this film, and you should, too! Take it for what it's worth and don't expect too much from it and you'll have a ball (or a bonk to the head with a cricket bat).

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
This film did more for cinema than anything has ever since. Truly, this brought on the birth of cult fandom, special effects in EVERYTHING, and taking old cliches and turning them into something new and exciting. I fucking love Star Wars.
37
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back 1980,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
The most emotionally-charged, character-driven Star Wars film of the three (I don't count the prequels). This one is the best. The twist in the end is like a kick in the sack.
