My opinion of Billy Bob was forever changed after seeing both this movie and The Gift. He completed the trifecta here with wonderful directing, a fabulous script, and one of the most remarkable acting performances I have ever seen (really, the entire cast was fantastic). If you have not seen this I cannot recommend it enough. Like all the best films, it evokes a wide array of emotions. It is so deep in its imagery and allegory, and yet so simple in its delivery. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen.

Glory
One of the best war movies ever; as much for the fully-fleshed characters as for the actual fighting scenes themselves. By the end, during their heroic yet hopeless charge, you can't help but feel a knot in your stomach. The musical score is wonderful, as are the acting performances (though I do feel Morgan Freeman was more deserving than Denzel Washington for Best Supporting Actor). The constant contrast shown throughout between life and death is a tribute to the fabulous directing job by Edward Zwick as well. And, as much as I have heard complaints about Matthew Broderick, he was ideal for this role; not only because he is a talented actor, but because he did not fit the part. And that was the whole point.

(Very good, very disturbing.) I thought I had grown hardened since the last time I viewed this film. I was wrong. I was amazed what a wonderful movie this is, considering it features Cameron Diaz. But I should've known with Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine being a part of it as well. I'm always amazed at actors who completely transform their bodies for the screen and Emile Hirsch does such a job here. It was interesting to see all the different types of people he came in contact with on his journey and I particularily enjoyed the scene toward the end where we see how everybody's life he touched felt at his not being a part of theirs at that moment. Perhaps a bit slow for many viewers, and certainly depressing at the end, but a solid movie in all aspects and one which I recommend.

I loved this movie. Great cast, directing, soundtrack (and use of music), with an original presentation. Sort of a Pulp Fiction meets Fast Times. Which is not surprising as it was adapted and directed by Roger Avary, Quentin Tarantino's credited (and uncredited) partner in many-an-early film.
