The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2003,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Very very well done! Kudos to Peter Jackson!
2
Minority Report 2002,  PG-13)
Minority Report
One of my absolute favorite movies of all time! The plot is a brilliant idea, and very intelligent in its portrayal of the future. The special effects are amazing, and are not haphazardly thrown in for the sake of appeal but are used to further the plot in spectacular ways. This movie is too brilliant for you to miss!
3
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Absolutely brilliant. I had high expectations for this movie, but I have to say that it shattered those - it was through the atmosphere! For once, a movie lives up to all the hype surrounding it. Where to begin? The plot was complex and very intriguing, kept me guessing all the way, and there were points where I though the movie was done...but it continued! I love that in movies. A lot happened, but through that the characters were developed extremely well. It was the perfect blend of excitement, tragedy, action and dialogue to develop a full, intricate and compelling story.
Heath Ledger. Wow. I don't think my words could do justice to his performance. I think that it is about time that the Academy stopped ignoring the action flicks and took notice of this spectacular performance. If Ledger is indeed nominated for an Oscar, you have to wonder whether it was because he so tragically passed away recently. I personally believe he deserves it, and I'd like to think that he would get recognition if he were alive today - we'll never know.
In any case, his portrayal of the Joker was brilliant. He was sadistic, demented and diabolical - I don't think it could have been done better. Everything was perfect, from the inflections in his dialogue to the way he licked his lips and moved his hands. I think that villains are the hardest roles to play, and Ledger rose to the occasion, doing an absolutely stellar job.
The other acting was quite good as well, although Ledger stole the show. Notably, Aaron Eckhart was exceptional as Two-Face. Maggie Gyllenhaal did a great job of picking up where Katie Holmes left off.
Finally, the effects and action scenes were masterfully done, putting to use all that modern technology can do in Hollywood today. The movie had a terrific plot and cast which made it shine in its own right, and the brilliant effects were the icing on the cake that made this a true epic.
In short, this is now one of my all time favorites, I could not give it any less than 5 stars. This is the movie to see, even if you don't see any more this year!

The Bourne Ultimatum 2007,  PG-13)
The Bourne Ultimatum
Wow. This is the best movie I have seen in a long, long time. Spectacular effects, stunning choreography, and awesome action all the way through - I can't say enough about how blown away I was! The plot was very well put together - unpredictable and random enough to make you wonder what will happen next, while at the same time not being too disjointed as to confuse the viewer. What amazed me was how cool Matt Damon was as Jason Bourne! I doubt that any actor could have done a better job. It was always fun to see Bourne outwit his opponents at every turn, and stay one step ahead...the movie did a great job of drawing the viewer into the story, and making Bourne someone the audience could connect with, if not identify with. If the movie was this good, I bet the books will be mindblowing - seeing this makes me want to read them! I would recommend this movie to anyone - only an older crowd though, it does have elements of violence. It's a must see!

Gladiator 2000,  R)
Gladiator
This is an epic masterpiece if there ever was one. 5 Academy awards, including Best Picture - that says it all. Russell Crowe is fantastic in the leading role - and won the Best Actor Oscar for it. There could be no higher praise. What made this movie transcend the category of just a "good" movie was the combination of amazing elements - mindblowing cast, spectacular cinematography, a powerful score, and to sum it up a brilliant directorial accomplishment by Ridley Scott. I'm surprised I hadn't seen this before - I can't praise this movie enough. I would definitely recommend this movie, but only to adults because of all the blood and violence. I didn't agree with the way the afterlife was portrayed, but it made me realize how thankful I am to be a Christian, because I can look forward to seeing my loved ones in Heaven.
6
Unbreakable 2000,  PG-13)
Unbreakable
Totally amazing movie, an absolute must see. I have come to see the genius of M. Night Shyamalan through this movie. The plot is like a comic book, yet the movie is extremely realistic in its presentation. The acting of Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson is utterly mind-blowing, and the twists in the plot will keep you guessing. Even the supporting characters put forth brilliant performances. Some may think this a slow movie, but if you like intelligent movies with plots that unfold steadily yet exquisitely, you will love this - it a movie that is relished slowly. This is a prime example of the masterpieces that Hollywood can put out without having to resort to excessive bad content just to draw in people. Don't get me wrong, because of some of the themes, I would only recommend this to adults; but it is not excessive or gratuitous in the least and every scene is tasteful and essential. This movie is one of my all-time favorites now, and I can't give a movie a higher endorsement than that - watch it!

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
My favorite Star Wars movie!
8
Stardust 2007,  PG-13)
Stardust
I didn't know what to expect with this movie. With big names like Claire Danes, Robert De Niro, and Michelle Pfeiffer, I thought it had potential. Having seen it, I am blown away! I loved the story so much, it was brilliantly original, unlike any other I have seen! The acting was quite good, and the score was spectacular! The supporting cast are one major element that added to the success of this flick. Robert De Niro as the pirate captain and Michele Pfeiffer as the witch were notably good, although the former portrayed a lifestyle I don't really agree with. The tone was somewhat satirical in regard to that, though. There was one scene in particular in which the captain was dancing in his cabin that was somewhat weird, and should have been left out of the movie - it was very awkward. The main characters were well cast, as Cox and Danes had real chemistry; the progression of their characters was very cool to see! The plot was not only unique, but contained many twists and interesting developments that kept it fast paced, yet at the same time not over the top. The world that Neil Gaiman has created is beyond words though - this is one of the best fantasy stories I have come across! It has become one of my favorite movies of all time, I am so glad I bought it. This is a great movie, with a little content that would make it ideal for teens or older - watch it today!

Ocean's Eleven 2001,  PG-13)
Ocean's Eleven
Very clever, you have to see it more than once usually to get everything, but it is amazingly well done, and packed with an all-star cast! Every performance is excellent! One of my Top 10 of all time!
10
V for Vendetta 2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
Spectacular. That's this movie in a word. Totally, mind-blowingly amazing, one of the best movies I have ever seen. There was a lot of blood in the movie, which was not so great, but there had to be for it to work. The plot was terrifically done, and the acting was truly spectacular - both by Natalie Portman (I personally believe this to be her very best movie) and Hugo Weaving. This is a must see, for adults only though. Although I think homosexuality is wrong, I do fully support the theme of this movie that we are not to hate homosexuals but we are to show them love, just as Christ loved us. The parallels with the holocaust are many, and I think that the movie has a very meaningful message about the evil that can, if we let it, devastate the world in the name of God.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Very few movies are so good that I watch them two times in a row - this was one of them! Spectacular cast, vibrant characters, great effects, awesome plot, lots of witty and memorable lines - this movie has it all!
12
Serenity 2005,  PG-13)
Serenity
Unmatched sci-fi movie! I will buy this one for sure, full of wit, awesome effects, and a realistic feel to it! It's amazing how much the lines will make you laugh, even when the mood is serious. A great wrap-up to the spectacular TV series, Firefly. The effects are terrific as well, and the fight scenes beautifully laid out.
13
The Passion of the Christ 2004,  R)
The Passion of the Christ
A very moving, heartwrenching film that strikes you at your very core. Mel Gibson did a terrific job of portraying the realism of Jesus' suffering and of the circumstances of his death - it is a true story, and was treated as one. Everything from the beatings and scourging with the cat-of-nine-tails to the scorn and derision of the people in Jerusalem was captured very well. On top of that, the dialogue was in Aramaic as it would have been in the time of Jesus, just adding another element of realism! Even Satan was presented true to form - the utter malevolence and evil that radiated from him sent shivers down my spine. This was a very emotional and painful film to watch when you realize all that Jesus had gone through for the sake of people that hated him, but at the same time gives us hope, with the powerful depiction of Christ's resurrection at the end of the movie. This is a must see for everyone - just keep in mind that Mel Gibson stays true to the original events as related in the Bible, and as such the movie relates everything that Jeus went through, in graphic detail.
14
The Island 2005,  PG-13)
The Island
Great movie!!!! Wow, I was blown away when I saw this. First of all, the plot is an awesome and very original idea, and it was very well presented in the movie. I was drawn in until the very end, and was sitting on the edge of my seat for the whole thing. The movie definitely made me think, as you consider the moral implications of the situations - the ethics of prolonging ones life at a cost to others. Brilliant acting by Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson and the supporting characters. This movie is a must see! To top it all, the effects were absolutely spectacular! There was a lot of product placement, it's funny how many brand names and trademarks you notice - Puma, Aquafina, Xbox and MSN among others.
15
The Prestige 2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
Wow. An absolutely terrific and mind-blowing movie! Imagine a movie that reveals itself in a stunning way - like Fight Club - without much of the bad content of that movie. That's The Prestige. The big names truly deliver in this one, as the intrigues and deception of the two magicians weave a twisted and very suspenseful story. There are many tragic moments, but it works to put across the obsession that drives each magician to be the best at all costs. This is a movie that I had not heard of before, until an overwhelming number of my friends had described it in the best of terms. It's rare to see a movie where everyone who sees it seems to like it! Truly, I have not talked to anyone who did not love it. It may seem confusing at first, but everything comes together beautifully to make a work of art. See it, and be prepared to be blown away by the ending!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 2005,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
One of my favorite movies of all time!
17
Enchanted 2007,  PG)
Enchanted
I did not know what to expect for this movie. I had heard very little about it before it was recommended to me by a friend. The first few minutes made it seem like a cartoon (similar to Snow White or Sleeping Beauty, etc.) and so I wasn't expecting it to blow me a away...that's because I didn't know that it switches to live action soon after! This movie was awesome, with lots of charm and neat references to classic fairy tales such as Snow White, Cinderella, and Lady and the Tramp. Though at times the song and dance sequences might seem a little corny, Patric Dempsey's character relayed some skepticism, which made a nice counterpoint for the magical happenings around Princess Giselle. The animation was superb, and the acting was great. The love story itself did not seem all that implausible and rushed, as is usually seen with these types of movies, as I think the main characters had some chemistry on screen. As usual, Disney delivers a delightfully unique way! A great family movie!

Toy Story 1995,  G)
Toy Story
Absolutely fantastic movie! Very funny and witty!
19
Over the Hedge 2006,  PG)
Over the Hedge
Don't get me wrong, Shrek and Shrek 2 were totally terrific movies, but frankly, Over the Hedge is the best animated feature by Dreamworks to date. The animal characters are extremely well casted, and were very endearing on screen! The jokes and situations were absolutely hilarious, and the animation was flawless. The greatest thing is that this movie can be enjoyed by us adults as well as kids! This is one of the best animated movies I have ever seen, and is on par with Toy Story, which is the gold standard of animated movies in my opinion.
20
Human Trafficking 2005,  Unrated)
Human Trafficking
An extremely powerful film that all adults should watch - especially if you have kids. It is shocking that this is actually going on here in North America, I never really knew the extent of it and this movie has opened my eyes. I would recommend this for adults only, as it is very disturbing and graphic in its portrayal of the practice of human trafficking. The performances of Mira Sorvino and Donald Sutherland are fantastic, and really add to this movie so that people are made aware through a movie, rather than a dry documentary. Another great actress was Laurence Leboeuf, who portrayed the painful experience of those poor women in a very poignant manner. Robert Carlyle was absolutely chilling in his portrayal of the sadistic head of the human trafficking business - one of the most twisted characters I have seen to date. I can't say enough to recommend this movie, it's heartbreaking and powerful.
21
The Fountain 2006,  PG-13)
The Fountain
This movie was confusing, non-linear, abstract, and even down-right bizarre at points. It was also brilliant. The style and tone of the movie was not conformist in that it did not resort to sensationalism or overdone, formulaic elements to appeal to a wide demographic. The same elements that make this movie so confusing are what blew me away. The movie conveys the themes of life, death, and love in a way that was truly genius. This is by far the most unique love story I have ever seen, and although it lacked many of ingredients so common in a romance flick, it spoke of love reaching beyond the bounds of death in a beautiful way that was incredibly powerful. I was definitely not understanding where the movie was going as I was watching it, and even having finished it there is no real pat explanation for the ending. However, this movie stands alone and shines without the need for any of that. This is a movie you will either love or hate, but if you keep an open mind, you will see a beauty that is rarely matched in movies today. It will move you even when you might not totally get it!

Big Fish 2004,  PG-13)
Big Fish
This visionary movie is one of many examples of the superb direction that Tim Burton brings to the screen. Performances were terrific all around, and the plot was complex and compelling, drawing you into a world that seems more fantasy than truth. T movie has also subtly blended in a number of meaningful messages, and Burton has allowed them to come to the fore slowly but surely and they are not blatantly blared. Yet again, the genius of Tim Burton has brought a dynamic and vibrant story to the big screen, and this is one you won't want to miss!

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
An absolutely amazing movie! The screenwriter, Charlie Kaufman, and director, Michel Gondry, create a very original and intelligent romantic comedy that deserves more than one viewing. Although it at first seems confusing, if you stick with it it begins to make sense in a mind-blowing way. The performances of each and every actor or actress is fantastic, and the underlying theme really moved me. The only negative I'd find is the excessive swearing and some other bad content. The ending is open to interpretation, but I prefer to think optimistically!
