My Favorite Movies

The Thing 1982,  R)
The Thing
This is the quintessential John Carpenter flick. If there was a better film to come from that mans loins, I've yet to see it.
2
Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs) 2002,  R)
3
Hustle & Flow 2004,  R)
4
Trainspotting 1996,  R)

A Charlie Brown Christmas 1965,  Unrated)
A Charlie Brown Christmas
My all time favorite Christmas movie. I have a real thing for Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang. It's grown into an unhealthy obsession. I think they're the closest thing I have to religion.

Philosophical debate, moral compassing, imaginary characters?

Sounds like religion to me. ;)
6
Talk Radio 1988,  R)
7
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) 1954,  Unrated)
8
Hot Rod 2007,  PG-13)
Hot Rod
Hands down the funniest movie I've seen in years. It's not going to be for everyone, but I definitely fell squarely into the niche target market that this film appealed to. If you're a fan of Andy Samberg, you won't be disappointed. Easily one of my all time favorite comedies.
9
Eagle vs. Shark 2007,  R)
Eagle vs. Shark
Hands down my favorite film of 2007. It's quirky, charming, and downright uncomfortable in all the right places. I can't recommend this movie enough.
10
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints 2006,  R)
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
Fantastic film in the same vein as The Basketball Diaries. Four youths growing up in rough'n'tumble NYC told through the adult perspective of the one of them who got out. Fantastic performances all around, especially from the always brilliant Shia. Not seeing this movie would be a fucking crime.
11
Ed Wood 1994,  R)
Ed Wood
Hands down my favorite Tim Burton movie. An absolute pleasure -- everyone is at the top of their game and the film captures the spirit and wackiness of Ed Wood in a way that even his real life never could.
12
Gone Baby Gone 2007,  R)
Gone Baby Gone
Fantastic piece of cinema. It's the first film in as long as I can remember that actually challenged me and asked questions about myself that I just couldn't answer. Well acted, well written, and one hell of a good mystery. All the clues are there, but I'll be damned if I could have pieced it together. That's exactly how a good mystery should be.
13
Persepolis 2007,  PG-13)
Persepolis
Brilliant piece of cinema. Arguably the best coming of age story committed to film. Set against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution and the years that followed, Persepolis tells the story of a westernized child having to adapt to and discover herself during the overnight arrival of an oppressive Islamic government. Absolutely five stars. The Academy can drink from my mule for giving it to Ratatouille over this.
14
The Foot Fist Way 2006,  R)
The Foot Fist Way
Brilliant in that "1 in 100 people won't shut it off in the first 10 minutes" kind of way. Awkward humor has been a big thing this decade thanks to Ricky Gervais and Napoleon Dynamite, but few films have down it as well as Foot Fist Way. Never has a total loser thought himself a bigger winner than in this film. Fucking HEE-sterical. Danny McBride is easily one of the funniest actors working today. Between this and Hot Rod, every line this man utters is instantly quotable.
