Films I simply adore but in no numerical order.

There isn't just 1 best film of all time and not just 1 important / prolific director. Get it?

The Birth of a Nation 1915,  G)
The Birth of a Nation
This will divide lots of viewers and still,a great amount of population will rise to the fact of political mendacity.Which is correct,no doubt about this.I really want to know however if all of the "audience" praising Scarface (De Palma's mediocrity) and Forest Gump (Zemeckis' sobbing flick) can realize the racist message in those films and not just in Birth of a Nation e.g. Puerto Ricans and low I.Q. people.Strange feeling, isn't it?Condemn the quality of a movie first and then we discuss the f***** political context!
2
Intolerance 1916,  Unrated)
Intolerance
Redemption for Griffith came with an astonishing work of art.The Birth of an Empire it should be alternatively nicknamed, the second title of Love's persistence is the dark sheet of pessimism,4 eras of desperation and at the same time, visionary trembling.Directorial zeal or a capitalist engrossment? You decide...

The Adventures of Prince Achmed
A criminally underappreciated animation film, the beloved template of heroes, chivalry, mythical delights made by Reiniger's magic wand is more than just a bargain.Sheer enthusiasm for an hour, this classic visual landscape fills the screen with a literally poetic ambrosia.

Dracula 1931,  Unrated)
Dracula
Without a doubt,a magnitude of a horror film.King Kong and Dracula exemplified the monster myth and illustrated a diminishing picture of the evil entity threatening humanity's face.It might not scare as it used to but style is sometimes over substance and Browning knew what to show and HOW to show it.

The Mummy
The parodies were imminent after a release so cheesy, thoroughly trifle and yet so charming (which wouldn't happen without miss Zita's provocative body-eloquence).
Freund managed to steer the wheel of this considerably spooky but not particularly hollow film,so Karloff's glance fills in wherever it's necessary!

Werewolf of London 1935,  Unrated)
Werewolf of London
The Wolf Man / Chaney connection embraces the romanticism of the folkloric legends (hence why the remake was made) but it remains an undisputed fact that Werewolf of London possesses a staggering chill throughout its menacing aura, for the most accolades should go to Henry Lull's exceptional intensity as the titular scientist who transforms himself into a creature of the night.
And yet, moronic children prefer teen slashers for their entertainment, oh brother....

My Man Godfrey 1936,  Unrated)
My Man Godfrey
Precise, irritating, clumsy and astoundingly gorgeous.A short length homo-erotic feature at the beginning,a magnitude in the face of Alice Brady,Godfrey is the epitome of spoiled aristocracy in a U.S. film.Courageous La Cava blasts the dialogue and luxury with a tight direction.Just amazing.

The Adventures of Robin Hood 1938,  PG)
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Exuberant romance and chivalry. These were the glorious days of real Hollywood, glamorous still but somehow, the most amazing adventures were made at that time.Sharp, abundant,Flynn and de Havilland are superb.
67
Aleksandr Nevskiy (Alexander Nevsky) 1938,  Unrated)
Aleksandr Nevskiy (Alexander Nevsky)
Illustrious portrait of a heroic Russian figure demented by a dutiful force in a spiritual defense. The film may display images of pious behavior but haste not, this is an epic drama and the people are who matter most, not ideologies.Magnificent score by Prokofiev.

Bringing Up Baby 1938,  Unrated)

5th Ave Girl (Fifth Avenue Girl) 1939,  Unrated)
5th Ave Girl (Fifth Avenue Girl)
Sure Rogers isn't the best of expressive and enchanting leading ladies to ever grace the Hollywood fathom, nevertheless her pussycat claws made me bow to her boyish fancies.La Cava must have enjoyed whipping the "white collars" of that period although he certainly couldn't go farther than the usual innuendos,as was used by studio directors....
Fuck it,the guy knew how to tastefully cheer us all!
71
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington 1939,  Unrated)
72
La Règle du Jeu (The Rules of the Game) 1950,  Unrated)
La Règle du Jeu (The Rules of the Game)
The "game" is translated as hypocrisy.May I offer my point of view just for the sake of it?I am allowed to do as I please, even so...where is my moral credibility so as my point to be justified, amongst the superficial points of our everyday lives? And who's to say that poets tell the truth? It depends on the "poets" and their class division, right?

Mesmerizing.Perhaps the ultimate Disney film, the most irresistible classical/visual combination and a critical achievement not even Disney himself could imagine.
77
The Great Dictator 1940,  G)
The Great Dictator
Versatile and improvisatory,Chaplin is hilarious as Hitler's "alter ego" producing a dazzling amount of jokes and superiority in his craft,I can even over-scale the melodramatic monologue in the finale. The appointment with the other dictator is anthology.

The Maltese Falcon 1941,  PG)
The Maltese Falcon
Revolution in screenwriting and character development,a phrase pretty trendy for our current cinematic affairs.Hasty reactions but a passive Spade.Which was Hammett's point,a pioneering investigator in the land of ruthless bargainers..by bargaining himself!
84
Aniki Bobo 1942,  Unrated)
85
Bambi 1942,  G)
Bambi
If I could pile up a list with the most touching love moments, the caressing events of Bambi and his friends to "conquer" their desires would be on my top 100 period!I rest my case...

Beauty and The Beast (La Belle et la bête) 1946,  Unrated)
Beauty and The Beast (La Belle et la bête)
All fairytales are derivatives of the guilt-innocence syndrome of the children's notion of the world.Beast is the vicious but kind-hearted soul thus Belle becomes the penultimate saint in Cocteau's mind.A Saint without wings, nonetheless a spirit of the most divine emotions a child would love to have as a protector. And of what of us,adults? An adventure in the forest is all that's left for us...but what an adventure!
97
Brief Encounter 1945,  Unrated)
Brief Encounter
Lean's double-headed waltz accomplishes something unbearably beautiful: to challenge the majority of its audience by linking Laura's monologue to the narrow train station of the couple's farewell meetings in a most naturalistic manner,it's as if Johnson and Howard are actual characters, flesh and blood.
98
Detour 1945,  Unrated)

The Big Sleep 1946,  PG)

Great Expectations 1946,  Unrated)
Great Expectations
Bleak and ominous,Great Expectations grips you from your seat and travels you into the plunging world of Dickens' living majesty. This is no fun ride, mind you.Lean the mastermind.

104
Out of the Past 1947,  Unrated)
Out of the Past
A blast of passionate mechanisms and bleak schemes of the heart,of the blackboard malevolence...Mitchum is simply astonishing as a cult figure of this classic Tourner film, erotic under the silken impression given by Greer's obsessive quietness and oh those shadows...
105
Force of Evil 1948,  PG)
Force of Evil
Plausible facts on this one.Aggressive till it bleeds.I saw this film on a cine-club somewhere in Athens. All 5 of us who attended were shocked at the boldness of that period,no,wait: the undercover "beauty" of it.McCarthy was approaching and if Polonsky was given better chances,he'd do miracles with noir stories like this. The edge of small-time con-men as an alternative title.
106
Hamlet 1948,  Unrated)
Hamlet
An almost prefect Hamlet on-screen,Gamlet as the first, psychological symbolism in Olivier's adaptation.Well-maintained film offering A-class performances and the Shakespearean pathos solid and unspoiled.Minor injustice at the Academy Awards, for Treasure of Sierra Madre should have prevailed that period, besides this it remains a token of great directed plays.
107
Ladri di Biciclette (The Bicycle Thief) (Bicycle Thieves) 1948,  Unrated)
108
Letter From an Unknown Woman 1948,  Unrated)
Letter From an Unknown Woman
You have to feel this movie. It's been quite some time and the leftovers are sheer gratitude of the melodrama of our protagonists.Ophuls conquered Hollywood by reversing the stereotypical mechanisms and bringing a fresh air.Fontaine may shine for example yet it's that tormenting the personality she possesses ,you can't bare handling her inner burden of her "lost",solid, possibly inapt love.
109
The Red Shoes 1948,  R)
110
La Terra trema: Episodio del mare (The Earth Trembles) (The Earth Will Tremble) 1948,  Unrated)
La Terra trema: Episodio del mare (The Earth Trembles) (The Earth Will Tremble)
Black and white films used to prevent us several times from actually noticing the underlying notes. The incredible fact is..Terra Trema must be one of the openly, politically charged emeralds of film-making.The fishermen are nothing more but pawns of the system, the all-seeing machine.

The U.S. landscape was changing before we enter the 50's.Thus,Raoul Walsh captures our essence in this amazing gangster film,Cagney sweeping us,the crowd, forming a shrouding cloud of filth and Oedipal symbols.Brilliant film.

Los Olvidados (The Young and the Damned) 1950,  Unrated)
Los Olvidados (The Young and the Damned)
Aggressive, iconic, mesmerizing in every frame.Bunuel's depiction of the grim social life of a bunch of street smarts and other lost souls is hallucinating.A staggering finale for a maleficent future prediction.
121
La Ronde (Roundabout) 1950,  Unrated)
La Ronde (Roundabout)
The blooming interactions of couples, romantic, idealistic, majestic.Fragmentary affairs, juxtapositions in lifelong particles. The question is,do we really accept those 6 degrees of separation or the carousel will embrace us all.

Sunset Boulevard 1950,  Unrated)
Sunset Boulevard
Whoever said this was a film noir? And seriously, anything below 4 stars for films like these needs quite a significant excuse!
What is so cherishing after watching this film is knowing you would want to make love to any Gloria Swanson around the globe isn't uncourageous at all!!....That and because I'll know by the end of my days I'll be fortunate enough to see the lights fading.Real lights and not any DeMille lights..

Winchester '73 1950,  Unrated)
Winchester '73
Classic western,Stewart appears as a new iconic symbol moving to the group of the many heroic western film figures, what about Anthony Mann? The stellar thing with this guy is he adores grand occasions.Epic form. And that is a novelty for the Far West genre.
126
The African Queen 1952,  Unrated)
127
Alice in Wonderland 1951,  G)
Alice in Wonderland
I feel that the Wonderland dream-scape is the coming-of-age of a little girl's wrath. There's the evident sign of conventionalism after the finale of an enormous pot-head,er...i mean..illustrious journey such as Alice's.I simply can't believe Disney productions haven't created a similar "traversing" environment like in this film.

Hakuchi (The Idiot)
Hara is the sheer benevolence of the film. You do await the breaking point just like the novel's mystical eccentricities.Kurosawa guides the dramatic community to far beyond limits and stretching a bleak, ominous, malevolent environment.A perfect cinematography and I will give it 6 stars after I grab the 5-hour edition I'm still searching for.....

High Noon
The retro western, where it all began and Leone got influenced.Gritty, dirty and romantic in a sensuous turn on.Cooper proves to be a macho, sensible character and Zinnemann's magnum opus is as untouched as when it was first projected. And the beat goes on...

Le Plaisir (House of Pleasure) 1952,  Unrated)
Le Plaisir (House of Pleasure)
The ending will more or less taunt you because it's like the similar conservative quotation from the other classic film,The Great Dictator, with different themes that is.I preach for your flexible safety, denying to accuse the numbness of the man in the last tale.Nevertheless, let it not prevent you from enjoying this gem.A succulent beauty is a fine-maintained delicacy, preferably on the second story, and passion is the fruitful inspiration.

Lovely charisma by Norman Wisdom, the joy of this movie comes from the roulette joggling of the slapstick elements, the wonderful supporting cast (Rutherford as a rather..."innocent" rich granny),a comedy keeping the precise scope, numerous chases, the occasional romance but beware, anarchy ensues!!

Kyriakatiko xypnima, (Windfall in Athens)
Soaring neorealism, the Visconti type only it's more vivid, bright and romantic than the Italian haughtiness.Horn is majestic and my love Lambeti is like a red,red rose "that's newly sprung in June"...the definition of a classic.

Sansho the Bailiff 1954,  Unrated)
Sansho the Bailiff
Holy cow, what a true work of art.Stiff, relentless in its grueling painting of the lives controlled by a ruthless leader.Tyranny as a weapon against free speech, not just freedom as a whole.Crime and punishment is how it goes.Where heaven and hell commit a tormenting piano sonata.
157
Senso (The Wanton Countess) 1954,  Unrated)
Senso (The Wanton Countess)
Passive as time goes by drama.Visconti excels his pace and fragmentary love affairs by lustfully projecting us the disaffection of passion throughout the course of harrowing events.Could be seen as a major precursor to Taviani's Allonsanfan, still maintaining a hidden strength in operatic detail to this very millennium.

Bad Day at Black Rock
Segregation is where the ends meet,no?The case is closed for a community which refuses to face reality's asphyxiating outcome.Tracy's attachment to the amoral protagonist earns the film a lot of points because the face of Black Rock parallels that of U.S. citizens at a time where governmental decay was waving around the barren lands.
What is the Holy Judgment you'll say and why should there be severe punishments for all the hostiles of the law?Free will i say....no free will, more discrimination....

The Ladykillers
An exceptional black comedy from top to bottom. The premise is what made Coens remake this masterpiece, but the plot is destined to remain legendary in British soil.Mackendrick twists our minds with those idiotic burglars (except their boss played by Guinness in style) and the term "madness" is a blast.

Le Notti di Cabiria (Nights of Cabiria)
The greatest neorealist picture from Fellini's early period, an innovator of transgressive themes such is a prostitute's living condition.Landscape as a hostile environment and a male oppression.A bizarre feeling in the 20th century even more alternative thanks to that amazing creature named Giulietta Masina in a supreme role going against the conformism of the "ruling class".

Hiroshima Mon Amour (Hiroshima, My Love)
Time is a thief,a delinquent of impeccable proportions.Hiroshima is the counterpart of Casablanca for most critics,to be fair...I don't think this is something universal since both these films have met equal opponents and masterpieces ever since the dawn of romance films..
But with Hiroshima...Duras dictated to Resnais that Amour isn't a possessive object,it's rather the location that causes it to be possessive between 2 lost souls.
A kiss is all that remains...

What are the odds when you don't know you're enticing a potential murderer?La notte of the long-lost lovers, quite possibly the vanity of the ethereal breeze during this frail train ride.Kawalerowicz's synchronization when commenting the decisions and tribulations of his native fellowmen bites the dust, causes a challenging, almost psychological earthquake and plunges into a sorrowful pondering on how humanity's sake can and will forever fit inside a handful of train-wagons.

More romantic than Dr. Zhivago, equally moving to the likes of an Alexander Nevsky or closer to the political turmoil of Traveling Players,a film which has nothing to be jealous of the epic boldness of a Lawrence of Arabia type of feast!
Criminally underrated,Aleksander Ford's storytelling focuses on the landscapes' pain rather the character's felicities and the astounding dialog is a bonus, based on the Sienkiewicz novel.Forgive me for saying this but the Grunwald massacre pumped me up!

Weiss studies two tragic figures in the midst of WWII in Czechoslovakia,a Jewish girl and an "Aryan" as the girl decides to call him before she gets to know his warm yet brave personality. The reason why this forsaken by the public film wasn't met with any accolades at the time it was released: critics don't often look beyond the academic rules and this is not an ordinary theatrical valley of kings and queens....it's an event,a glance,a prejudiced antagonism and it could have happened no matter the place and the time.

Days of 36 (Meres tou '36)
Part I of A Trilogy of History by Theo Angelopoulos:

The particles of 20th century Greece being here,in an attempt to observe, spy and subsequently organize the scattered hopes of the ancient legends.Suffice to say Angelopoulos re-defines history as we know it,it's hilarious to find out underground schemes and corrupt authorities damaged a (non-existent) state of union!!!
That is,regardless of the politicians, ignorant of the prosperity of the state nor of the rebellious inmates, struggling for their voice to be heard against a totalitarian nation (Metaxas the "prime minister" was ready to rule with the 4th of August Regime),not even the main protagonist of the drama exaggerates.

What more can you ask when you have an all-star cast of Berger,Mangano,Howard,Schneider,a cohesive prestige of "wealthy pendants" and a brilliant piece of biographical composition.A legendary figure to dedicate this probably,aha...who cares if that individual is a combination of Napoleon,T.E. What? (Diary of Forbidden Dreams)
So what if it's an unusual assault to moral attitudes?Perhaps it is a whole lot of a terrible sketch.Polanski definitely has a writer's block and yet,I thoroughly enjoyed the crazy ride.Sometimes,a couple of films despite their idiosyncrasy, give you a certain flash of juvenile happiness.

La Maman et la putain (The Mother and the Whore)
A humongous effort, this 4-hour epic, unsettling, long dialogue is one of the finest pieces of post-nouvelle vague in the history of world cinema.I hate the main character. And it's ironic because it's somehow flamboyant....the way he rejects the emotional state of the women in his life.Life as a big joke or as a wee bit of adventure simultaneously. One of cinema's most thrilling triplets.

For what it's worth, ghost stories are at their best when the monumental hour of illusion takes place in the minds of the victims. Not exactly a feminist work of art but the eeriness of the girls and the trembling musical notes assist Weir to film in a surprisingly warm scenery his treatise on questionable events, the mythology behind them and how nature is arguably both a friend and a foe to the living creatures.

The Travelling Players (O thiasos)
Part II of A Trilogy of History by Theo Angelopoulos:

Pure mysticism but requires a lot of patience. What Angelopoulos divides here is time and present history.Flash-forwards to the General's Regime (or should the Civil War be denominated like that?),the uninvited theatrical troupe merging in the seemingly confusing backdrop of Greece,a masterful touch of a timeline mixture,it's as if tragicomedy of chronology occurs where Golfo, the troupe's play is but the interlude in between the film's chapters.

A lost treasure amidst the cinematic ocean, the question is: do you dare watching a film where only the idea of killing a child is necessary? The much-talked footage in the beginning is the premise for a haunting adventure under the boiling sun.The couple as an allegory of drifting souls, preys for children-hounds.Amazing!

Part III of A Trilogy of History by Theo Angelopoulos:

Wanna know what was Angelopoulos' intention with this film?Well, don't expect a straightforward reply!
According to the post-civil war feelings and terminal partition by the Papandreou democracy, the factual Rules of the Game and "America's" be-friendship are valid, but who yelled for any "foreign" aid?Maybe the film does circulate in a vicious historical trap, and here's how Theo achieves his scope,in a "we shouldn't care of any of the WWII results,we might as well have died by our own comrades a few years later" quota and alas, that small company, from past to future, looks as if hope was finalized by the regimes, the revolutions, the duplicate, governmental allusions...

A crucial turning point of the film is the mystical arousal of the "waitress" thanks to one of the sleeping brothers, embracing a lost caress against the general...boredom of the protagonists.Yes,ladies, gents, boredom is the main concept and how passiveness affects our intellectuality and nobility.I will never comprehend the disillusion of a father prancing with his sons and a woman in a rich villa eating and....sleeping!!!Is the mother's death a metaphor to female absence and organization?

Mini-series,the artifact of a mad scientist. These monumental episodes by that uptight "scream" justified Alfred Döblin's modern classic,a statuette of ambrosia delving into the hearts and minds of spacious yet preconceived characters, apparitions of a crumbling institution, whether it's political or just unstable.

The Element of Crime
I want to break free could be the alternate title, and no,nothing to do with Queen. The sequences prepare even from a trailer that this is no ordinary detective story: it's more like how to execute the perfect story by cursing European authorities. The freedom of Von Trier allowed him to execute for himself a spectacular debut where many similarities of this e.g. color hews would appear in The Kingdom, his mini-series.

Marketaki didn't live enough to expand her talent. The few films left behind are proof of her personal style and careful observance. The Price of Love is one of the good films that happened to appear in an era where Greece had a downfall with straight-to-video film success.Interesting depiction of a conservative community though somehow steady compared to today's standards of film-making,but Loulou is truly moving.

Romero's trilogy is a feast for the..human fleshes!!!No,really, the hordes of manic zombies violating us,the entire population is one shockingly realistic vision. No other type of film (let alone this trilogy inspired the video game for youths like Resident Evil) is placed next to these epic films, the last part containing even emotional theories and common sense from the zombie side.

Empire of wisdom. The Greek nation as many inspired it to be the odor of sentimental rise and where is the uplifting spirit?Probably shackled in the cages and bars, frightening but even love stories bond after years of turmoil.Voulgaris' story isn't a social reminder, leaning forward to the...c'est la vie decisions. To struggle is to overcome.

Dripping with moist bravado and sexual insight,a provocative illusion by Techine on the sharp edge of his career and beginning of creative roll.Binoche blasts the screen in a classic performance, commercial failure but critical applaud,post-modern theater/cinema interaction and one of the seminal films about sexual frustration and need.

Birth/Innocence and Death/Fury become Gates of Redemption for the characters of this literal wasteland...Incoherent cries and whispers, seeking their destiny in a Nothing (?).....

A live-action stage play.
No,I'm serious, the spotlight belongs to simply two characters who simultaneously ravish, mock, joke, blaze, torture (need I continue?) each other,a no-bars exploration to a recently divorced couple's systematic breakdown. It's not about the quarrels yet Jabor's flourishing video-projections leading to talkative realities are the concept after all,of deception and alternative lies, and they're not exhausting at all!
Chacon may be the experienced acting force but the solo tango is Fernanda Torres' privilege who could probably act the whole film by herself!

Hannah and Her Sisters
I suspect Hannah is the female alter-ego of Woody Allen after all. There's a heartfelt emotion from beginning to end and all the characters gain something regardless of the low blows they might get or their selfish attitude most of the times.Wiest and O'Sullivan are the female rocks and Caine is the cool jazz, questions and quarrels are the main protagonists of this carousel of comedic adventures.

This is pure poetry, subtle and a magnitude compared to amateur attempts of recreating the vast social thoughts of each soldier in battle and private situation. It's a mesmerizing divinity entranced by the sheer landscapes and natural affiliation with human diginity.Nature won't hesitate to counterattack and then no enemies or allies will crush her.Neither true, honorable soldiers nor revisionist commanders.Malick as an innovator of slow-paced moving sight and John Toll's cinematography hits motion picture oil.

I am enraged.Furious of what's wrong with governments. How to let know Rosetta otherwise, despite being a fictional character she's a manipulative object of the political system subdued by North America/Europe,deliberately powerful for the ongoing "machine" producing puppets to serve the invisible king? For that and only complex reason,Rosetta won't escape her little canteen.

The Circle (Dayereh)
Undoubtedly,it's one of the top 10 films of 2000.Justification knows no boundaries and female, psychological suffering is excellently displayed on this film.Real drama, nothing fake to cover the truth.Panahi eluding his road to "sacrilegious perdition" contrary to the customs of Iran,we can say with certainty it's a universal journey.A journey disastrous through the looking glass of a handful of women.

A staggering blending of alternative values where orientation is lost even by the ones who aren't blind.Law torches sensitivity by deleting the primal instincts of any such conceptual difference, her body of work is (whatever the case may be) a research of emotional behavior through any series of events.Sexual desire is not restrained to just a physical grasp,it also motivates viewers to empathize, yell, express disappointment over the injustice in both characters' revision of their lives.A Man and a Woman, unidentified as is the case with most of us,wanderers of a worldwide outback.

Fascinating, profound in whatever way possible. The three portraits of 3 female generations are penetrative, society's dignity mingles in a boiling pot.Come and see the 21st century of travesty.Meshkini delivered a stupendous piece of art,one of those films thus a couple will dare to watch because it's "unknown".

The ideal inheritor of De Sica's Bicycle Thief, erupts as a serious contender against composing deals, circumstantial notions and a willing contradiction of ideas.Xiaoshuai is a very underrated Chinese modern trespasser of independent film-making and he sure knows to catch our breath with the flamboyance of his people and characteristics of their self. The finale is amidst the top of 00's.

Angelidi is unlike anything you've witnessed in the worldwide scope of directing. Her studies intensified her aesthetics in camera-frames causing her to shoot Thief or Reality with an unstoppable pulse of implausible situations and yet all put together in an acceptable order.Thief steals lives but it also fills in the emotional shell,Thief is the Future who manipulates,propagates...
Woman although scrawny is finally the point of no return for the imbeciles, the fair judgment. And if human life is but a song,a seer is the solemn singer...

Re-evaluating my primary review.I am pre-occupied on the reasons of "why and "how".Noe admits to the viewer the immeasurable shock of the despaired individuals of his film caused by yes, unfair stupidities, enlightens their path gifted with the "style",provokes.A daring French filmmaker,a truthful plot, considering "performance" and post-modern art are the important messages,so occasions like these happen. That's life and that's the mystery of it.

Art drenched in mythological symbols, yes? Most certainly, and poesie is included on the humanitarian cycle.Suleiman inherits the Tati syndrome and with a few Keaton persona strife, the facial expression reflects the round-up of his marvelous essence.Divine Intervention is a groundbreaking achievement,Kaurismaki must be jealous not for the political satire but for the deadpan environment!!!

Provocative but not relentless.I remote myself in a vast plain, mingled with the sky's peacefulness.I wouldn't wish though to have such temper aside of me.Palms as a fake plastic manuscript of thoughts and determinations. The couple is disjointed and yet so loving you feel their inner loss towards the end.Dumont shows how much a film can present without shaky camera movement and a classic film-making persona. The outcast figure.

Martel defies the canonized "Catholic" topics by alienating the values of love, detest and sickness.Inner sickness, vacant passion and finally, that tempest called teenage years. The languid pace of the film doesn't repulse the viewer,on the contrary...I felt more repulsed by the holiness of certain characters, thus giving me a reason to disrespect their religiousness.

Innocence 2004,  R)
Innocence
A stroll in the woods.Alternative title: how to face your demons, obey the unknown rules and express your gratitude by shutting up your pre-teen smile.Sorry, did I say shut up?To think it's a creepy achievement of elaborate shots and mysterioso atmosphere would be little.Arguably,a controversial subject carefully placed and a cathartic finale.

Tropical Malady
A contemporary classic of unflinching whistles just like the forest of transformations in the second half of the film. Apichatpong curiously observes the inhabitants of his tale but without intervening in their timid reactions and for what it's worth, an oh-so-dear flirt between the men of our story. Shamanic myths and the jungle's hedonistic junction, Tropical Malady captures an almost religious howl and defies the cinematic rules like so many films did before it, only it gets more visible in recent years.

Lyrical, soft as the white snow, partially brutal but that's just my metaphorical enthusiasm.Theresa Poh Lin Chan as the real individual amidst fictional tales of love, the hunt for love or simply eternal love.Yeah, the plot is familiar you'll protest...sure,if one scratches the surface and realizes miss Theresa's inabilities are but her unique breath whereas the ones who can see and hear are the shamefully crippled.

One might raise the hand and question the authenticity of the director's responsibility for executing a precise account of horrifying events,or the sympathy he showed towards Hideo Nakaizumi's role of the Japanese private or maybe giving Gao Yuanyuan her most mature performance to date.Maybe nothing will happen at all and the film will exhume under the roaring blockbusters.Whatever the result will be,Lu Chuan's crescendo is here to stay.

The Temptation of St. Tony (Püha Tõnu kiusamine)
What a malicious and illuminating journey to the depths of hellish beauty! That's a paradox alright but how can you explain Õunpuu's essay on the culmination of ideals, of anticipations and of obsolete dreams in any different way? A higher quality film than any Tarr of the 2000's and by applying a semi-Lynch universe in the black and white disturbance, I don't think anyone would really care that the plot's vignettes are over-represented and the abruptness of things defies the superlative characters. It's what it is and subjective interpretation is required when you're dealing with Estonian landscapes. After all, we're all gonna die at some point, poor Tõnu simply happened to preserve a slice of cynicism more than the rest of us.

Tenshi no tamago (Angel's Egg)(Egg of God)
This one's a hard shell to crack but once you look behind the apocrypha and the relevant dystopic symbols, you'll come to an inner closure, one that lies beyond the little girl's hope for a "better tomorrow" and the (take it or leave it) "Anti-Christ" figure's idiosyncratic expression throughout the film. A panorama of desperation and unearthly disaster, all the more present by the Gothic environment, alongside a creeping score.
