A fine end to the best horror trilogy in years. Jigsaw is back, and although this game isn't as crafty as the last two climaxes, it still punches you in the gut. The traps are elaborate, and this flick made me and three other big, tough guys cringe and turn a few times. A gruesome, great gore-fest. An above-average end to an above-average franchise. I hear they're making a Saw 4, but I wish it wasn't true. This tied up the loose ends, and it did it nicely. This is one flick you don't want to miss. There Was blood, and maybe there will be more to come. Get in the game with Jigsaw tonight.
Never in my life have I been so literally offended. Never in my life have I felt queasy from the dialogue in a film. Never in my life has a film made me so disguisted. This one did. I waited a full day after my view to ponder this little film. Then, it hit me. Cohen wasn't doing it to piss people off. Well, maybe he was, but he did it to show us what some people (he DID interview AMERICANS) actually believe and still view today. He is showing us it these views are wrong, indirectly. He Wants us to feel morally degrated and incorrect. Maybe even to hate Borat. Because then we'll understand his point. These racial commentaries and social views are wrong, and he was leading by example with his character, Borat. So, knowing his point, I think it's time you all go to the cinema, and view this brilliantly funny spectacle, and make sexy time in theatre today. High five!
Every year, there comes a film advertized as an explosion-filled, gun-blazing, throw-away action flick that turns out to be much, much more. This year, "The Blood Diamond" is that film. Filled with heartwrenching, affecting performances by the underrated Dicaprio and the newcomer Hounsou, this film is much more than your run-of-the-mill action film. Garnished with a raw taste for 1990's Africa, and a slew of affecting visuals that will stay with you even after you leave the theatre, this long, drawn-out action film is one true suprising materpiece of this year. See it today, because now that I have, I know I'd spill my blood for this "diamond".
All I could say at the end of this fucking brilliant spectacle was, "wow". The best movie of the year is this tense crime-thriller that dazzles, delights and enthrals. With to-notch performances all-round, a fitting score, and breathless direction from crime movie giant Scorcese, this truly Is the best movie so far this year. I now take Back my comment on the brilliant "Little Miss Sunshine", and give its' crown to this achievement. The best crime movie since 90's "Goodfellas', see it today.
Bitingly funny and darkly unique, this showing from a debut director and a truly Brilliant ensemble is one of the best comedic showings of the Decade! With characters that you're amusingly Ashamed to admit you identify with, and a tone that screams origininality, this is a sure-fire hit that shows us that even in a time where original film-making seems to have hidden under a rock, we can still find a few gems on the surface.
A monumental achievement. Just when we thought our cinematic world had lost touch with the art of the seamless-plotted, twisty-turny, art-house thrillers of "The Usual Suspects" calibre, along comes this gem. Brilliant performances, a seamless plot, and an unpredictable ending will have you laughing, smiling, frowning, and gritting your teeth in suspense and pleasure, this comedic thriller never takes itself too seriously, but never seriously embarrasses itself. One of the most entertaining movies in the past few years.
I went into this movie knowing nothing of Rocky and the five film legacy, and I came out loving everything. This was truly a brilliant comeback and a gorgeous sequel to be remembered for a long time. A modern classic, and a boxing movie titan that deserves the praise it's getting. Look for it on my top 20 list to come out in February.
As a strict hater of black-and-white movies, I've always been reluctant to watch this Holiday flick. But, alas, same as every other year, it came on tv the night of Christmas Eve, and I put on my pyjamas, snuggled in my bed, and caught what is possibly one of the best movies of all time. Not just limited to being the best holiday film ever, it is one of the best plain old movies of all time. With a breathtaking performance from James Stewart, whose presence ignites the screen, and great chemistry between all the leads, this film is a true epic masterpiece for all ages. In a time where films rely on sex, swearing, violence and obscene plot twists and social statements to bring their movies up to good standards, this good, clean straight-forward flick will have you smiling for days.
I reluctantly sat down the other day to watch the film widely regarded as, "Tarantino's worst film ever". Widely regarded as an underachiever in many cinephiles' books, I, a lover of Tarantino AND Jackson, was very cautious and worried to see this film. Man, was I surprised. Filled with a brilliant ensemble, and particularly good performances from Jackson, Grier, Forster, FONDA and De Niro, this is a film not to be missed, and even ranks slightly above Reservoir Dogs in my book. A tight plot, a few great twist and turns, and a whole lot of fun gives us a film that should rank in the top five of 1997. Buy, not rent, Jackie Brown today, and be able to enjoy it over and over again for years to come.
In a day and age where good movies, much less good action-dramas, are scarce, there always seems to be one under-the-radar, unexpected fall picture that blows us all away. Ladies and gentleman, this is that movie. An unconventional, intriguing, involving drama, this movie is a pure gem in a society where tried-and-true formulas are, Sadly, the average movie. With wonderful performances by Costner, Sagemiller, and AMAZINGLY, Kutcher, this is a keeper. A heart-wrenching, seat grabbing, eye-popping action-drama, this film is one of my must-sees' for the fall season.
As a crop of Oscar would-be's hit our tired and breezy January realease scene, there's little to find in many of them. This film, however, is a cold hard exception. What I got was one of the best-acted, best-layed out films based on a true story I've ever seen. With a young, Highly impressive cast, (Timberlake, Yelchin, Foster and Hirsch being the standouts), and brilliant veterans with small, but important rolls ( Willis and Stone ), this is a film for the ages. Those who say this film had no story simply didn't want to look. Running at almost two and a half hours, it got tedious, but with each smoldering performance and tense scene, we see these young adults spiral from misguided punks to full-blown murderers. The light, fun atmosphere changes to a dark and moody crime-drama, and, well, the theme of the film starts to rise. This is truly a spectacular film, and is Not to be missed. It's searing, stylized, powerful, and truly goddamn brilliant. If you see any would-be Oscar favorite this brisk tail-end of winter, let it be 'Alpha Dog', you won't be let down.
With 'Children Of Men', we are thrown into a futuristic, apocalyptic world where women cannot reproduce, and humans, the once-brilliantly vibrant beings at the top of the food chain, are slowly dying off. Ticking bombs and racking nerves are creating high tensions, and we are given a moody, quietly angry setting in which humans have truly become sad statues of a dying race. Clive Owen is our portal into new human existence as an alchoholic, socially depressed man whose child was killed, and lover hasn't spoken to him in years. Spending most of his time with his crazy friend Jasper, brilliantly played by Michael Caine, he is the complete epiphany of the future human. However, his whole world begins spinning out of control when a 'terrorist' group, headed by his ex-lover, Moore in a throwaway role, and is asked to help deliver a mysterious woman across the border. What ensues is a conflicting emotional and physical battle to get this special woman to her destination, and people will do anything to help. Why? Because this woman is pregnant. Greed, anger, prayer and deceit all play a part in the film, and what a searing, beautiful, hautning portrayal of future life it is. This will definitely make my top ten of the year. See this depressing but familiar film today. You just might come out Actually thinking of how much of a gift birth really is.
It's not often we get a sequel to a remake, but hey, Hollywood is greedy these days. Truthfully, it's a remake 'prequel", but who the hell cares about technicalities? This, ladies and gentleman, is a true sign of brilliant horror film-making. An impressive cast, including the wonderful evil F. Lee Ermey lift this otherwise-conventional horror film into cult classic status. It's terrifying, gruesome, and rings true to Tommy, A.K.A Leatherface's later years. It's highly visually impressive, and might I say, pretty damn scary. Bloody, v iolent and brilliant, sit down and enjoy this scarefest, it's well worth it.
It's Oscar season, ladies and gentlemen, and there are a barrage of films buying for our, and critics' affection. This little indie gem is one that is certain to win you over this year. With a winning performance from Whitaker, who has now convinced me that this Shouldn't be Leo's year, and a fact-based, horrifyingly entertaining aura, this is a true spectacle. The film follows the reign of Idi Amin, the new president of Uganda, and his doctor, played by James McAvoy. What we are given is a crazy, brutal film that is sure to stay in your mind for a long time. All hail Forest Whitaker, because god dammit, this man deserves a statuette this year.
Do you remember your high school years? Do you think of the good times, the parties and the boozing and drugs? Or do you think of getting beat up, crying, being alone, and finding your own little niche in the world? I'm in high school now, and even now this film is relatable. With a blazing hot, catchy soundtrack, a true retro feel, a young, recognizable cast, and the most heart I've seen in a movie for a long time, this is a true 90's classic, and it's one of the best films ever. If you haven't seen this movie, you haven't lived. Relive your high school years, for better or for worse, today, with 'Dazed And Confused'.
When you look at the synopsis, actors, and director for this movie, tell me; Who the HELL would want to see this? Two-bit ex-teen hearthrobs, a dark comedic tone in a teen comedy, and a first-time director, and we have ourselves a set-up for pure crap. However, that isn't what we got. We got a genuinely interesting, surprising, and hilarious take on college life. With Everett Scott and Gosselaar, who REALLY comes into his own, and stand-out supporting roles with Hannigan and Munro (CRAZY ACTING, STEALS THE SHOW), this is a true college campus classic that is our generations black-comedy 'Animal House'. It's films like this that go to show that things aren't always as they appear.
The world today is full of addictions. It's also filled with movies about addictions. Drugs addictions (Blow, Requiem ), Power addictions (Scarface, All The King's Men), and so many alchoholic characters that they've even weaseled their way into Disney films ( Depp in POTC ). However, one addiction we rarely hear of, is an addiction to Violence. People who will fight for anything, and anyone. "Hooligans" shows us just that. It follows Wood, in an incredible indie turn, as a disgraced, ex-Harvard student starting out on the streets of London. Through Pete Dunham, played by newcomer Hunham, he is immersed and sucked into the world of soccer hooliganism, and finds a meaning and strength in the violent underworld of "firms", the piece of soccer fanboy lifestyle we Don't hear of. What ensues is a whirlwind of gangfights, tests of loyalty, and the bonds that grow from two common bonds; a love of soccer, and a love of Violence. More fights and more carnage ensue in this beautifully shot indie thriller until we hit the shocking climax, and, when you leave this film, you feel you've been truly exposed to the senseless addiction of violence, and the lengths people go to in order to get their fix. This is a true masterpiece, so Fight to see it today.
