Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
I like happy endings. This is still my favorite. Empire is a better movie but I still like this the best.
2
Ever After: A Cinderella Story 1998,  PG-13)
Ever After: A Cinderella Story
Ingeniously resourceful Cinderella saves her prince and wants to create a library.
3
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington 1939,  Unrated)
4
The Truth About Cats & Dogs 1996,  PG-13)
5
Born Yesterday 1950,  Unrated)
Born Yesterday
Great movie about American idealism. Ranks with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
6
Dumbo 1941,  G)
Dumbo
Of the early Disney movies, Pinocchio is the most accomplished technically. Snow White is probably the best all around. My favorite is Dumbo. It accomplishes it's main point in an simple, clear manner. Pink Elephants is incredibly imaginative. The "Bably Mine" sequence will just tear your heart out. Dumbo's final drop is uplifting.

Overboard 1987,  PG)
Overboard
This is one of my guilty pleasures. I know it's not a great movie but I love it anyway. I can watch this movie at any point and get sucked in. Gary Marshall has a talent for taking odd situations (revenge on a client in this film and reforming a prostitute in Pretty Woman) and making it a romantic comedy.
8
The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
"Rember that hope is a good thing, Red, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies." This is a great adaptation of the Stephen King story. I especially like that it reminds a person to control their circumstances and not let the circumstances control them. Also it's a great friendship between two guys without being weird
