Sanjuro (Tsubaki Sanjûrô) 1962,  PG-13)
Sanjuro (Tsubaki Sanjûrô)
I never tire of watching this one. One of the best of all time

The Hidden Fortress (kakushi-toride No San-akunin) 1958,  Unrated)
The Hidden Fortress (kakushi-toride No San-akunin)
Even Kurosawa's B-movie throwaways are better the most other's A game.
3
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) 1954,  Unrated)
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai)
This is the movie that will make you wish you were a Samurai. Unlike Western movies, SS is not so much about Good Guys v. Bad Guys as it's about the value of trust and loyalty v. self-interest and suspicion. The bad guys only exist to bring the samurai and the villagers together, we don't even see them until the last twenty minutes or so. This movie is a masterpiece of plot, pacing and characterization. I knocked off half a star only for some over the top acting. In my book scenery chewing is scenery chewing no matter what language it's done in.

Rushmore
This is still Anderson's best movie, though I haven't seen "Darjeeling Limited", yet. Every time I see it, I wish I was one of Max Fischer's cronies.

Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut (A Man Escaped) 1956,  Unrated)
Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut (A Man Escaped)
This is a textbook example of how movies should be made. Not one wasted shot, not one extraneous word.
10
Pickpocket 1959,  Unrated)
Pickpocket
Not as crisp or tense as "A Man Escaped", but still one of the most intriging crime movies ever made.

3-Iron (Bin-jip) (Empty Houses) 2004,  R)
3-Iron (Bin-jip) (Empty Houses)
This is one of the most amazing films I have ever seen, a definite must see for any true movie lover. If M. Night Shyamalan had the soul of a poet he MIGHT make movies this good; at least, he wouldn't be the hack he turned out to be. 3-Iron is a zen meditation on the connections we make with others and the ways people can affect you without you even being ware of them. The film is also a pure cinematic confection. A movie with with almost no dialogue and little action yet is impossible to turn away from for even a second. This is the first Kim Ki-duk film I have seen, but I plan to see all I can. There is no other filmmaker working today who is as original, smart, poetic, yet accessible.
