V for Vendetta 2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
Thought-provoking film with great characters.
2
The Boondock Saints 2000,  R)
The Boondock Saints
Cult classic for a good reason.
3
300 2007,  R)
300
Intense, glorified violence in fantastic scenery with a great soundtrack.
4
Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
Royal ass-kickery with humour and a surreal twist.
5
Eastern Promises 2007,  R)
Eastern Promises
You pretty much have to be a fan of this sort of thing to find this anything but boring and unnecessarily brutal, but this a very impressive film throughout. The dedication the makers have shown is awesome, all the way from the tattoos to the accents. The story is a very interesting one, alternating between the regular people -point of view and the ethics of the criminal world. The ending isn't really the strongest pint, but getting there, and the subtext is certainly interesting. ...and damn if Viggo still isn't looking damn fine.
6
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
The series is finally getting to the dark and gruesome level the comic book fans have been expecting for far too long now, and the end result is a seductive mix of genuine madmen, real evil, moral choices, gloriouos violence and gratuitous explosions. Although the handling of Two-Face is pretty much sub-par, Ledger pulled out all the stops and his performance as the Joker will be rememberd and is worth remembering as great even long after the hype has dwindled away.
7
Wanted 2008,  R)
Wanted
A weird mix of Fight Club and Matrix, this is one of those cool-by-default badassery films that play so smoothly you barely notice the weak and uninspired plot. With two hot leading stars and a lot of very intense and surprisingly depthy scenes, this certainly worth watching again.
8
Four Brothers 2005,  R)
Four Brothers
A good story about four tough guys and their own way of protecting their family. While the plot is far from original, the characters have a very good chemistry between them, and this violent film with its humour and tragedy is better than would seem at first glance.
9
Reservoir Dogs 1992,  R)
Reservoir Dogs
A defining movie. Excessive violence and great, interesting characters.
10
The Rocky Horror Picture Show 1975,  R)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
The mother of all cult classics, it's impossible to have a neutral opinion of this film; it's either complete love or hate. Campier than a row of tents, it's crude, vulgar and absurd. However, the songs are damn catchy, the actors are doing a job you wouldn't believe before seeing, the story is twisty and ridiculously entertaining and really appeals to the wild side... Let's do the time warp again!
11
Murder by Numbers 2002,  R)
Murder by Numbers
A great thriller, filled with subtext and antagonists you actually cheer for.
12
Pitch Black 2000,  R)
Pitch Black
A visually innovative, very character driven survival horror film. The plot isn't much, but the chemistry between the different characters is awesome, and Riddick steals the whole show with his rugged and dangerous charisma.
13
Like Minds (Murderous Intent) 2006,  PG-13)
Like Minds (Murderous Intent)
Incredibly well built story full suspense and more and more disturbing plot twists. The characters are incredible and well portrayed, and the creepy chemistry between the male leads is amazing.
14
The Crow 1994,  R)
The Crow
A gothy action classic with a variety of interesting characters and macabre scenery.
15
Silent Hill 2006,  R)
Silent Hill
One of the best modern horror films. This movie captures well the disturbing and nightmarish terror of the games, and is an excellent stand alone as a film, too. The visuals and soundtrack are absolutely awesome. The only slight minus side is Sean Bean's character's rather anticlimactic uselessness.
16
2001 Maniacs 2004,  R)
2001 Maniacs
A great splatter classic, this movie is shamelessly full of violence and twisted humour, celebrating its bad taste with pride. Entertaining and fun, the film has absolutely no redeeming artistic or cinematographic value, but that's pretty much given in the genre. The gore is hilarious and very creative, making this a great piece to be watched in likeminded company.
17
Daai lo oi mei lai (Enter the Phoenix) 2005,  Unrated)
Daai lo oi mei lai (Enter the Phoenix)
If you manage to not throw a hissy fit over the "offensive" gay jokes prevalent in the film, it's actually an incredibly well rounded film. All flavours of humour spot the film, although it isn't without its more serious moments. The writing is very good, managing a great depth for the relationships between the characters as well as their own personal conflicts. The key actors pull their roles perfectly and the whole story flows entertainingly well, down to the last scene. The big fight scenes in the end are plain awesome in their execution, and for once the tricky camera work is pulled so it enhances instead of annoying.
18
The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day 2009,  R)
The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day
One of the best sequels ever made when it comes to staying true to the original. The old crew is back and it's easy to see that this film is made straight from their hearts. Even more gorier and funnier, there are spots where the viewer has to shake their heads because the film is trying too hard but in the whole it's way better than one might expect. There's still no cinematic value to be had so critics will hate this just as much as the first film, but for the fans it's something to love just as much as the original. A special nod has to be given to Special Agent Bloom who holds her own perfectly and Troy Duffy, who knows how to make introductory female characters that the audiences can actually like.
19
Death Race 2008,  R)
Death Race
Existing solely on the Rule of Cool, this is one those movies that you either love because yoiu have the balls to admit it has incorporated some of the best elements of B-film awesomeness or hate because you went to film school.
20
Inception 2010,  PG-13)
Inception
If one hasn't grown up devouring William Gibson's cyberpunk books, this movie's storyline probably comes off as miles cleverer and fresher. However, it's still a fairly enjoyable and entertaining romp with a lot of talent, stunning visuals and a cast full of The Pretty. Unfortunately, Hollywood is still convinced that the audience won't be happy with any film unless its major feature is some sort of romance or another, and apparently Arthur/Eames doesn't count.
