Reality Bites 1994,  PG-13)
Reality Bites
My all-time, absolute favorite. Love it still, well, possibly forever!
A hilarious film about a group of friends (Troy, Lelaina, Vickie, and Sammie) that have graduated from college (with the exception of Troy who forgoes completing), and now all have embarked into the "real world" of finding jobs, dealing with the onset(s) of relationships, and realizing that their friendship is most significant with even a bit of sense of humor. Ben Stiller also stars in this movie as the 'love interest' of Lelaina. Filled with tons of laughter! Great movie brought forth by Ben Stiller, and remarkably written by Sharon Childress. Great cast- Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, and Steve Zahn. Phenomenal music! The soundtrack still rocks even after ten years. Definitely worthy.

Haters can hate, but those who dig nothing but humor will know what this is all about.

The Return of the Living Dead 1985,  R)
The Return of the Living Dead
Great movie! Here is an interesting zombie flick brought forth by Dan O'Bannon. The beginning sequence of the movie is simply superb, and gotta love that bell chime and synthesizer that rolls with the opening credit. The overall story plot reflects a group of teens wanting to find a place to hang out and have some fun, so they choose a nearby graveyard while waiting for their friend to get off work. While their friend Freddy is dealing with his own problems at work, they start to notice that things are starting to happen in the graveyard with the 'dead' returning from their graves. The overall movie depicts the groups' efforts in staying alive, with a bit of humor to boot. The group of friends are an interesting sort, and it is topped off with Miguel A. Nunez Jr.'s character "Spider". Great zombie effects and characterization. Good music. Absolutely love The Cramp's 'Surfin Dead.' Definitely worthy! This is definitely the best of all the 'Living Dead' collection.

Multiplicity 1996,  PG-13)
Multiplicity
Love it! Hilarious comedy-drama. Here is a movie filled with tons of laughter, and one that always leaves you feeling good. This is definitely my all-time favorite amongst the collection of movies from Michael Keaton. This movie is about Keaton's character "Steve" who is married with children and has a demanding career. Steve tries to juggle the demands of his business, his relationship with his wife, spending time with his children, and heavily committing to the financial responsibilites in their lives. These demands and obligations begin to take a toll on Steve, and thus begins to think when does he ever get a chance to have some time to himself. When he meets a scientist working on a cloning project, he ponders his options and decides to embark on one crazy adventure right after another to help alleviate some of the pressures that he has to deal with on a daily basis and fully embrace his freedom. At a cost, he realizes that these endeavors also create havocs. Andie MacDowell is absolutely great. Definitely worth checking out.

Nomads 1986,  R)
Nomads
Great movie! This is definitely one of my all time favorites in the supernatural suspense collection. Pierce Brosnan truly shines in this, and the story plot is highly intriguing. Brosnan is a French cultural anthropologist who is studying the various patterns of nomadic people in the world. In the completion of his studies and move to California, he discovers and develops a current interest in a group of outsiders in L.A. He sees resemblance of nomadic traits in the lifestyle patterns of this wily group. The closest connection that he compares it to within his studies is that of the Inuit people. His interest begins to take toll as he is welcomed by the group. As he tries to quietly walk away, it brings further tension from the group and this final realization brings his death. In the last moment of dying, it is a connection with an E.R. nurse that allows us to see the remaining days of what happened to him in memories, nightmares, and haunting thoughts. This movie reflects much of Native American aspects in connection with life, death, and the soul and spirit of a human body. Love this movie. It's quite interesting to see Adam Ant in this movie, especially as the leader of the group of outsiders. Lesley-Anne Down is absolutely fantastic in this movie. Definitely worth seeing!
5
Me Without You 2001,  R)
Me Without You
This is an all-time favorite movie of mine! It is about a remarkable growth of friendship through time, and beautifully captured through the trials and tribulations of Holly and Marina. The two met as children living next door to each other, and quickly becoming best friends doing just about everything together. The path into adolescence leaves the two dealing with the onset of emotional disasters in various relationships and embarking into new adventures, or lack of. Although Marina is highly self-indulgent and takes Holly's friendship for granted at every opportunity, this leaves Holly sadly living in the shadow of Marina's misadventures and pining for the love of Marina's older brother. Despite having a cruel friend, it is Holly that truly shines. As adults, Holly is fed up with all the mistreatments, past and present, she then realizes it is more than just about self-worthiness and acceptance but about separating herself from Marina altogether in order to have her own life. Great cast! Michelle Williams and Anna Friel are a great combination. Trudie Styler is brilliant. Absolutely love Oliver Milburn in this one! Phenomenal music!! Gotta love Echo & the Bunnymen, Cowboy Junkies, Depeche Mode, The Clash, etc. Definitely worthy.

Price of Glory 2000,  PG-13)
Price of Glory
Fantastic movie!! This is an absolute favorite of mine. After the pivotal peak and rise of HBO's original 'Resurrection Blvd," here is a film with similar interests and highlights of a family in boxing. The movie reflects around the Ortega family who lives near the border of Arizona. Arturo was once a young boxer who dreamt of becoming world champion, but his dreams were crushed the day when he lost a bout in a money fight. Several years later, he teaches and trains his three young sons in hopes that boxing will help secure their future financially. As they get older, they soon realize their dreams are getting bigger as well as their interests. The family embarks upon several new stages in their lives, and Arturo realizes that choices and decisions are no longer his to make but that of his sons. Great cast- Jimmy Smits, Clifton Collins, Jon Seda, Maria Del Mar, Louis Mandylor, and Sal Lopez. Great music! Definitely worth seeing.

The Prophecy 1995,  R)
The Prophecy
"Marked by fate, doomed by prophecy...Time is running out for mankind!"
How can one not be intrigued by that, here is the best & the first of the Prophecy collection. A film led by an all-star cast of actors: Christopher Walken, Elias Koteas, Virginia Madsen, Eric Stoltz, Adam Goldberg, Amanda Plummer, and-lo and behold-Viggo Mortensen (with a small part, that is). Of course this also gives a heartening welcome to uprising star, Moriah Shining Dove Synder. This movie is a reflection of Walken's ingenuity as he portrays an archangel, Gabriel. Mortensen also shines as the infamous fallen angel, Lucifier. Elias Koteas as Thomas Daggett, a detective who was about to become a priest but lost his faith in God. The film location is Superior, Arizona. This film gives a slight recognition to Native Americans (particulary Navajos). For example: Lucifer speaking a Navajo word that details "continue/go forth", a short scene where Mary is getting help by a hand trembler (a Navajo doctor who diagnoses which type of ceremony to use to "heal" [a person]), and of course, the last scene in the movie where a singing is taking place and Mary sits on a sandpainting (which also refers back to a Navajo ceremony). Fascinating! There's a cultural reference. Of course, there's Adam Goldberg. He's one among my favorite actors, and is simply brilliant in this movie. He portrays Jerry, a guy who commits suicide but is brought back to life by Gabriel (Walken) to serve, and through the film gives innovative, quirky quotes that only Goldberg is known for (which makes him terrific in my opinion).

Gabriel: It's not here.

Bordertown 2007,  R)
Bordertown
A great movie by a fantastic director-Gregory Nava. Once again, he reflects ingenuity!
It's interesting to see that Jennifer Lopez had an interest in the plot of this film. It's good to see that the issues presented in this film are somewhat addressed. In a certain way, it should give the world an insight into the ill treatments of the effects of NAFTA. It's disheartening to see the contributing factors of it upon the women of the region-border.
Banderas, del Castillo, Sonia Braga, and Maya Zapata are indeed superb!

Favorite Scenes:

Truman:All right, we need to find anything that can be used as a weapon.
Megan:Does anyone have anything sharp?
Frank:They consficated my toenail clippers..pearl handle, with matching tweezers...quite lovely.
Truman:Damn, Frank. You should have brought those. You could have saved the day.
Frank:You never know.
Paul:How much ammunition you have left?
Truman:I got five in here and one clip. What about you?
Paul:One full clip, five more.
Truman:Shit.
[Frank opens storage, pulls out electrical cords]
Frank:Hey, maybe we could electrocute the bastards.
Truman & Paul:No, don't do that!
[Frank yanks cords out, sparks fly. Lights go out]
Megan:Aah!
[Dark. Frank lands on the floor, holding his head]
Frank:I guess that could have gone better.
[Frank gets back up on his feet]
Truman:Frank, you stupid shit. Please tell me you're dead.

Very funny!

The Mistress of Spices 2005,  PG-13)
The Mistress of Spices
WOW! This is a great movie! Tilo (Aishwarya Rai) has her gift and traditions, as mistress of spices. Living in America, she has certain rules to follow and it becomes difficult when she falls in love with an American (Dylan McDermott). Like most cultures, traditions usually doesn't reign supreme but its realization that in modern times, especially in America, one lives how one can even if that means changes in certain customs. In the end, it's not so bad when family is all that is important as most of the characters find that out. Love and happiness, and Al Green sure says it best.

GREAT MOVIE! GREAT MUSIC!!
Bally Sagoo has a phenomenal track "Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha". It's great! Then, there is the flute mix which is hypnotic.
59
Namastey London 2007,  Unrated)
Namastey London
This is a fantastic movie, very romantical! The movie plot is a little slow in starting (with only one good part in the beginning- Arjun giving Jazz away at the church wedding and then walking away), it doesn't pick up until Jazz and her parents travel to India and she thus meets Arjun for the first time. From then on, its fascinating and intriguing. Arjun dancing and singing is so expressive of his emotions and in his happiness, and one cannot help but feel for him throughout the movie. One also cannot help but connect with his plights and hardships, in all the characters- it is Arjun that one really connects with. His sense of humor is truly intriguing and he is such a sweetheart! FANTASTIC LOVE STORY!

Great music; dance/pop/r&b-ish! It's good to see movies like this that give reflections to other films-i.e. like 40's American film noirs, nightclub sequences. (Example: Akshay Kumar (Arjun) singing "Chakna..." in the nightclub, as he holds the mike, he sways to and fro like most nightclub singers, but with a phenomenal twist! That is definitely my favorite scene! DANCE MUSIC!! Truly amazing, I don't mind getting the soundtrack for this.

Sunshine 2007,  R)
Sunshine
This is an extraordinary movie! Great cast, brilliant director! It is amazing to see Cillian Murphy in a Boyle movie again, as well as Cliff Curtis (one of my favorite actors). This is definitely a movie of interest, especially for Boyle. As post-apocalyptic movies are made, this is definitely one to watch simply because it joins other similar films that primarily focuses on the overall involvement and conditions of the sun as well as other natural disaster in life.

Great music as one can always expect in a Boyle movie, the best musical track is at end/credits: Underworld's "Peggy Sussed". Awesome movie!!
65
Once 2007,  R)
Once
An excellent film! Truly loved it from beginning to end!! Great music! Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova are phenomenal. The storyline is quite interesting as it follows their newfound friendship in writing music together. The budding romantical connection is somewhat dwindling, but it is their friendship that triumphs in the end as each is off to their own. Great movie scene: The Car Test/Beach Scene (as they all go off to test the musical composition in Eamon's car, and head for the beach. It's memorizing for the fact that it reminds me of similar car rides that I enjoy listening to music to.

Great song: (Falling Slowly), as well as others but this particular track is hypnotic and truly captivating! Its beautiful music that one can enjoy, and become lost in, as one takes a drive in the car.
For me, its a drive on up to Colorado and the music is similar to those that I can tune into on Chill or The Coffehouse on Sirius, LOVE MY SIRIUS!! ^__^

30 Days of Night
FANTASTIC MOVIE!!!

This is a great, suspenseful horror movie, and I was truly intrigued from beginning to end. The creatures are definitely a new rise in the array of horror genre, and this movie generates and reflects such ingenuity. I was also amazed that Josh Hartnett had decided to star in a movie such as this. Horror fans, this is definitely for you! It's a must see.

Great music!

Southland Tales 2006,  R)
Southland Tales
An outstanding movie!! A movie without a basic story plot format usually is a risk, but with this particular one--it was definitely not needed, or even a lesser known was acceptable. But, what can one expect from ingenuity such as Richard Kelly. Filled with humorous scenes and much of the most celebrated actor & actresses in the business, all making appearances. Brilliant!!

Absolutely f**Kin fantastic music by the great Moby. Can't wait to get my hands on the soundtrack. Great UK spin on The Pixies's "Wave of Mutilation"!!

Turquoise Rose ,  Unrated)
Turquoise Rose
An interesting movie! This is a tale of a young woman, Turquoise Rose, who returns to the Navajo reservation to take care of her grandmother. This movie is filled with many hilarious moments and gives an inside look into the lifestyle of the Navajos. Great film by Holt Hamilton.

Natasha Kaye Johnson and Dashava Apachee are phenomenal. Ernest Tsosie (of 'James & Ernie' comedy duo--which they are absolutely brilliant!--) guest appears in this movie. It's even sweeter to see an elder take a supporting role, and that is Grandma (who is played by Ethel Begay).

GREAT MUSIC!! Especially, the lead song track played in various scenes throughout the movie. Fantastic songs by Until August.
74
Wristcutters - A Love Story 2006,  R)
Wristcutters - A Love Story
An excellent movie! Great story plot. Absolutely love the direction and intrigue that this movie has centralized around, despite it being a very sensitive subject as a conversation topic. I've always wondered about the other angle of things, and this is definitely a spin. An interesting tale spin, that is. Although the thought of this movie in general being a gray area, this movie actually contained some hilarious moments.
For example: "The Gas station scene" where Zia had to fill out an Incident Report.
Shannyn Sossman and Patrick Fugit are great! Absolutely love the music.
75
Day of the Dead 2007,  R)
Day of the Dead
Hmmmm...I thought I rated this one. Oh well! Seen it. Quite interesting. Steve Miner directs this movie. An interesting cast. Good story plot. Although I like the zombie aspect of this, I think I prefer the namesake. It would have been nice to see Rhodes make it though. Quite worthy.
76
Penelope 2006,  PG)
Penelope
"It's not the POWER of the curse, but the power YOU give in the curse."
This movie is about a young woman awaiting the day to be rid of an old family curse (by finding her true love). She goes through the emotional turmoil of rejection every single time, until she meets a likely character in James McAvoy.
Great movie!! Quite hilarious, and intriguing that the depiction of fairytales are not so much rendered in this. The damsel in distress doesn't need rescuing, for she rescues herself! In the end, she is free! She finds love. She is happy.

Great music! Absolutely outstanding movie by Mark Palansky!! Christina Ricci and James McAvoy are phenomenal! Catherine O'Hara, Peter Dinklage, Richard E. Grant, and Reese Witherspoon are awesome.

Bella (Beauty)
Beautiful movie!
Intriguing story plot about a young woman named Nina. She gets fired from her present job, and also realizes that she's pregnant. Suddenly, she's overwhelmed. Choices. Life: Past, present, and future. The connection and friendship she kindles with a former co-worker, Jose. In the end, their friendship marks a remarkable change for the better, in their lives.
This marks a beautiful outlook into a family structure in a movie, one cannot help but explore and feel the dynamics of such a world. The relationship between siblings, especially between Manny and Jose is absolutely fantastic. Kinship, very rare. Sophie Nyweide and Eduardo Verastegui, and Manny Perez are simply outstanding. A must-see! Great music.

Poltergeist II: the Other Side 1986,  PG-13)
Poltergeist II: the Other Side
Great movie!
Particularly in the sense of a sequel, but not as great as the first. This second installment has a new director, Brian Gibson. However, it centralizes upon the history of Kane and his followers. Interesting story plot that also ties in the remarkable capabilites and gift that Carol Anne, her mother, and her grandmother all possess. Let's not forget the introduction of Tangina's friend, Taylor. The Late Will Sampson's character that brings forth the native cultural aspect within this story. A fascinating tie-off. The native cultural factor within this movie reflects upon the "Warrior" aspect, clearly seen in the beginning of the movie. As Taylor travels to the top of Spider Rock, a sacred site of the Navajos. (FYI-Spider Rock is located deep in the Canyon de Chelly in Chinle, Arizona) to meet a spiritual guide who thus, gifts him with a warrior spear to "go to war with the evil spirit". The dialogue is a little difficult to comprehend, but it is there nonetheless. Great cast! Tons of Anglo/Native humor. Worth-seeing. Gotta love Julian Beck. Gotta love the music!! This is among one of my all-time favorites.

The Savages 2007,  R)
The Savages
An interesting movie about family. The relationship between two siblings (Linney and Hoffman) are hilarious and highly touching in this movie, as they are faced with the overall responsibility of taking care of their father. As they ponder the capabilities of their tasks, they search for a nursing home to place their father in. Intriguing story plot! Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman give great performances. Great movie!

Diary of the Dead 2007,  R)
Diary of the Dead
Absolutely outstanding! This has definitely surpassed any of my expectations, and I was amazed to see this latest film by George A. Romero. The overall plot was intriguing. Fantastic conclusion. This is definitely not an installment into other 'Dead' films within the collection simply because the approach is different. This is genius due to the fact that he doesn't stick with basic techniques or format (i.e. story plot) as he has done in previous others. This approach is classical for it ties off some forms of elements of the others, and it gives a form of journalistic viewing for audiences as it is deemed 'diary' as obviously stated. It reflects its own general perfection. Great character interactions. But, in general, one of the best quality that Romero reflects and depicts is social aspects and integrity of the mass. He has clearly not let down any of his true followers in this latest film in that spectrum. (As a true Romero fan, it is sometimes not all about the "zombie-esque" but the social chaos and humanity, or lack thereof)
This is definitely a must-see!

Definitely a tearjerker! *sigh* A must-see (if you dig romance movies).

Under the Same Moon 2008,  PG-13)
Under the Same Moon
Absolutely fantastic!! Great story plot, very touching indeed! This is by far one of the best movies I have seen since "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada". This movie centralizes on the lives of Rosario and her son, who stays with his grandmother in Mexico (while Rosario works illegally in the U.S.). Their struggles to make ends meet, as they are apart also has them thinking about the separation as it is. This movie, like many others, details a vast 'human struggle to survive'. Whereas humanity deems that all should co-exist in nature, we as people should highly think and reflect upon our central priorities for it deems us for who we are, and what we are, thus details our identity. For one, it has me thinking about our own immigration policy and about those who wish to come into, and live within, our country (at any means necessary) and their struggles to live a good life as well. Who are we to deny basic human desires. Phenomenal movie!!! Great cast: Kate del Castillo, Maya Zapata, Eugenio Derbez, America Ferrera, and Jesse Garcia. Definitely a must see!

The Happening 2008,  R)
The Happening
Amazingly good! Intriguing and suspenseful story plot. This is definitely a new venture for M. Night Shyamalan. This film's approach is not thoroughly intertwined like the others, but then again its fascinating to see that one can always be left to assumptions. Clear or not. Its expectations that most depict and reflect, but fail to remember that suspense is the overall drive in a social mass chaos film. This has a bit of the elements tied together, humor and drama with a bit of cold, harsh reality in for the ride (although some would deem that to be on the 'squeamish' side- I thought it was truly amazing). Great cast. A must-see!

Seven Pounds 2008,  PG-13)
Seven Pounds
One of the best Will Smith movie I have seen so far!! This is truly one movie that has you thinking, even hours after watching the movie. The story plot is truly touching and heart-wrenching, as it is portrayed on a less-illuminated subject as organ donating. The interaction between the characters is beautifully reflected. The depiction of human nature is broadened and remarkably noted. It also bluntly reminds us of a greater common responsiblity of caring, understanding, and accepting, reasons even if reasons were unclear. This is another great choice on Will Smith's selection of roles, especially after 'The Pursuit of Happyness". Great cast- Smith, Rosario Dawson, Michael Ealy, Barry Pepper, Woody Harrelson, and Elpidia Carillo. Defintely worth seeing!

Amazing movie! Once again, Karan Johar directs an astonishing movie that parallels other great films within his collection. Here's a movie that brings two of Bollywood's greatest actor and actress together, again.

Until the events of 9/11, they begin to experience the cruel discourse and mistreatment. It is a horrible tragedy that breaks their happy life, and Rizvan begins his journey of meeting the president and upholding a promise that he has made to his true love.
Here's a movie that strongly speaks out for itself, and defines a great message. When we begin to define ourselves by certain terms, we tend to forget that we are also human. We are connected by that distinct integrity, and blindingly forego acceptance. Racism. Hatred. Ignorance. It all goes hand in hand when we fail to look within our own selves. The Stoning of Soraya M. 2008,  R)
The Stoning of Soraya M.
An exceptional depiction of the shrewdness of one's own sly fortitude upon others in the schemes of religious and political views. Obviously, this appears to reflect unkindly on those who follow, and practice, the faith of Islam but one must also remember that these "honor" actions, and killings, are evident elsewhere in other religions as well. The fact that they are committed for deplorable, and heinous, reasons is an actual sickening thought, and that individuals would impose such inhumane actions for whatever selfish gains they seek.
Soraya Manutchehri was thirty-five years old. A wife and a mother, she had refused to give her abusive husband a divorce just so he could free himself of responsibility. Living in a remote village in Kupayeh, Iran, a divorce without financial support would imply a harsh future for herself and her children. He finds solace in his love for art, and escapes into the leeway his imagination creates. After an incident at school, he is sent to a boarding school for discipline. Away from home and family, Ishaan becomes even more weary when he doesn't do so well at his new school. His confidence and will is shattered, and begins to lose interest until a new art teacher arrives. Ram Shankar Nikumbh instantly notices a despondent Ishaan, and discovers that Ishaan has all the symptoms of a learning disability that he himself dealt with as a child. His compassion, patience, and desire to help has enabled him to work with Ishaan using alternative methods of teaching. This enables Ishaan to regain his love for art, as well as bridging the differences in acceptance.

Robin Hood
Reflecting upon the preliminary years of a legendary protagonist that evidently fights for the social injustice of a people who have repeatedly been subjugated to the cruel hardships of the social political structure. Thus, he instills hope within those striving to rise above the horrid feudal system and the hierarchy of those empowered by greed, and blinded by the power it falsely represents.
Directed by Ridley Scott. Amazing musical score.

Desert Flower 2009,  R)
Desert Flower
"The extraordinary true story of the woman who crossed a desert and changed the world."

Desert Flower, a film directed by Sherry Hormann, is based upon Waris Dirie's autobiographical account (also from the same title). Waris Dirie collectively, and remarkably, depicts various definitive events that mark her personal journey from nomadic childhood living in the Somali desert to the luxurious lifestyle of being a former international supermodel. At the height of her career, she expresses her views and own personal experience about "the day that her life changed" in an interview with Marie Claire magazine. Above all, she emphasized upon an atrocity inflicted upon young girls in a most cruel and mutilating cultural practice. As a UN spokeswoman, she advocates for the end of female circumcision.

Escaping an arranged marriage to an older man at the age of 13, young Waris treks through the desert to the capital, Mogadishu. It is there that she finds both her aunt and grandmother. After learning of her plight, they secure a housekeeping position for her with a wealthy family in the Somali Embassy in London. Leaving behind her mother and siblings, she travels to England all alone. After several years, her grandmother's premonition holds true. Civil war eventually breaks out in Somalia. After the Somali Embassy closes in London, an elder Waris is left behind and struggles to survive on the streets of London. In a departmental store, she meets Marilyn McKeene who eventually becomes her lifelong friend. Marilyn and Waris are total opposites, and various antics of Marilyn continually shock Waris. Cultural, social, and gender differences mark numerous hurdles for Waris. However, in Marilyn, Waris finds solace, comfort, and a sister.

Liya Kebede, Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson, Meera Syal, Craig Parkinson, and Anthony Mackie stars; a most impressive performance by young Soraya Omar-Scego. The film's main theme is a beautiful music composition performed by Martin Todsharow. This is a most powerfully driven drama that will leave not an eye dry.
