In terms of action serials this film ranks as the perfect tribute for the golden oldies of the 30's and stands as one of Ford's iconic performances. Perfect action sequences that grab you from the word go, with the temple sequence, and doesn't let go. Perfect villains, tension and fun, a must watch for any movie fan.
Defintely one the best times I had in the theatres back in 2007 and best to be viewed in tandem and with an audience to get the full experience and interaction with the ridiculousness. Planet Terror is pure sci fi B goodness with an A cast, Freddy Rodriguez and Rose McGowan make great albeit unlikely leads her, and just the final set piece with the gun leg is pure joy and hilarity. Death Proof is slightly less so as it takes a while to take off and is almost like Tarintino is creating Resevoir Dogs again with a woman cast. Russell is great as the villain slimey yet weirdly charming, and features the classic lines and killer soundtrack. The car sequneces are something to behold. And if you can find the fake trailers anywhere, especially Don't and Machete, check them out!
Between this film and Jaws, the creation of the summer blockbuster season was completed. Jaw dropping visuals in terms of models and motion control set the standard for the next 10-15 years and allowed Lucas found Industrial Light and Magic and get his other project on the self, Indiana Jones, off the ground. A pillar in filmmaking and still ranks as one of the most iconic sci fi films of all time.
The crittics pick as best of the series and there is no doubt why. Great climax, revealing Luke's destiny, and the dark path the lead characters are sent down. With the addition of new layers added to the character of Darth, this film has become an instant classic.
Probably ranks as the definitive doc on the making of the trilogy along with some of the revolutionary techniques that they designed for film along with way including the digital film camera and effects, advanced puppetry as well as inventing the modern blockbuster as we know it. Totally enjoyed seening some of the screen tests from back in the day especially the shots of Harrison acting as a line reader before being cast as Han Solo.
Dont make fun of me but this is the sentimental favorite for me of the trilogy since it is the first film I can remember seeing at the theatres as a kid. The definitive space battle of the original trilogy and nothing can't top the Emperor in terms of chilling evil performances. One for the ages.
Great short stories focusing on the clone wars that take place between episodes two and three. Best ones feature Dooku recruiting the dark assassin to slay Skywalker at the gladiator games and the final few chapters where the assassin and Skywalker face off on Yavin. Great stylistic animation and a fine departure from the earlier cartoon series. This proves that occasionally when Lucas brings on the right artists and let them riff, his ideas about the beloved series and some other projects can really take off and fly.
As the creators for this feature said in the extras, they were given the opportunity to animate the opening crawl for Revenge of the Sith and release it before the film came out, and what a response they got. Essentially showing the invasion of Corusant done in the animation style of Samurai Jack, and also introducing the character of Grevious in a much cooler portrayal than the film, the filmmakers are firing on all cylinders in terms of storytelling and cool. In a lot of ways, these two clone wars cartoons was what fans have been clamoring for since the early 80's and not the new Clone Wars film and cartoons done all in Cgi which is unfortunate.
The more intimate of the two films and fully embraces the spaghetti western motifs that influenced Tarintino in the making of the films. One of Mardsen's best peformances and definte great use of various actors from various genres both A and B list.
great genre bending film that includes lots of pop glitz, spaghetti westerns, splatter house and asian crime cinema/martial arts. Excellent use of soundtrack both new and rediscovered as always
Great revival of pulpy noir crime drama in an uncoventional setting of green screne filmmaking. This might be the film that Rodriquez is remembered for. All star cast and brilliant, dynamic visuals! A++++++
A great return to form by Scorsese to the genre he reinvigorated in the late 70's and his best film since Casino. Jack Nicholson gives a tour de force.
A superb film with an all star cast who all deservedly warrants Oscar nominations, Scorsese's best film of the 90's in my opnion. Vegas has not been shot better, Richardson is the new hot shot DOP.
A great raw reboot for a franchise suffering from bloating effects and far out scenarios. Craig is an inspired choice for Bond and excellent gradual reveals for all of his iconic mannerisms and moments (vodka martini's, tailored suits, vintage cars, etc). Best entry since Goldeneye!
A great debut for Tarintino, simple, low budget heist film that plays like a stage play. Best known for the opening tracking shot and of course, the torture scene set to Stuck in the Middle w U. Will always be remembered for that scene. Also a lot of the cast assembled here have gone on for great careers in the independent world and it has marked the gradual return to promanence for Harvey Keitel who made a splash in the 70's and had seemed to disappear for most of the 80's. Between this and Sex Lies and Videotape put Sundance on the map as the fest to watch in the US.
One of the best films of the 90's and best crime drama's of all time. Gritty, stark, doesn't play down to it's audience. The cast is utter perfection especially the leads. Probably one of the best climaxes in film in the last 20 years along with Usual Suspects and few others.
This film serves as my introduction to both the independent film movement of the time and also when I started being more selective in terms of my movie going choices as opposed to just going to the latest blockbuster at the muliplex during high school. Great writing and awesome ensemble acting put this film way up there on my list, and it is amazing looking back on the quality of the actors assembled here. Spacey and Del Toro have both gone on for stellar careers, and Bryne is lighting up HBO on his new series. It is probably one of the strongest debut films for any director in my memory and for sure one of the best films to come out of Sundance in the 90's.
Now that Dark Knight has been released, we can actually go back and even praise the original reboot even more. The fact that even though this is a super hero film, the fact that it is so grounded in reality at the same time, and shows the gradual evolution of the protagonist makes even more geeky to watch. Photographed beautifully and designed as practically as possible, makes it such a detailed world that you can believe in. Finally we have an actor portraying both a decent Batman and Bruce Wayne at the same time rather than focusing on one side of the scarred psyche over the other. One of my personal fav things about the film is the fact that rather than going for the obvious villains actually going for two of the villains that are revered in the comics that the franchise hasnt hit upon yet (Scarcrow and Ras Al Ghoul) and doing them justice). Also enjoyed the teaser at the end of the film and the fact that as we all now know, delivered on a perefectly realized Joker.
The dark one of the dark Batman's. Perfect realization of the villains, especially Catwoman who far outshines the Halle Berry misfire a few years back. Awesome visual style by Burton and all around great blockbuster fair.
My favorite all time of the series (granted Batman Begins is a close second)it is a very gritty albeit stylized and perfectly casted masterpiece. Inspired choices of Nicholson and Keaton in the leads, who play off each other perfectly, and the movie flaws by so fast that you keep on wanting to watch it again and again and again.
One of the best horro films to have come out of the last decade or two, a great reimaging of zombies for a more contempary audience and of course the empty streets of London always leave me haunted
A great look at the world of gaming and how a series of gamers hold a rivalry over the highest score of Donkey Kong. A guilty pleasure of one of the best fads of the early 80's and of geekdom in general. Lots of fun and a guilty pleasure.
One of the few times in recent years I have felt like a kid watching a film all the way through. Excellent FX, mixed w solid performances and Jackson found ways to reinvigorate the concept such as having Kong battle 3 T-Rex's not one, etc etc
Amazing visual FX at the time and defintely ranks as one for the ages. Dialogue is dated of course but has that capability of being shown to a young child and inspiring them to become a fan of film and possibly involved. Loads of fun.
