Cabaret 1972, PG)
Cabaret is a film that I revisit often, perhaps once a year or so and each time I find the film more and more fascinating. It's a film that refuses to fit itself into any particular genre whether it is a musical, political commentator, love story, or turbulent drama. It's also a film that defies convention by making its main character an extremely unlikable character whom you cant help but care for due to her childlike naiveté. Cabaret is bold for its (at the time) frank depiction of a homosexual man caught in an unusual time and place in history. Bob Fosse's direction is spot on throughout the story and makes the wise choice to cut all songs out of the film that do not take place within the world of the Cabaret itself, save for one song - Tomorrow Belongs to Me. This number is both chilling and surprisingly relevant to what is happening in this very country today with the current administration and the rise of the Christian right. It successfully demonstrates how an entire country could be swept up by such nihilistic idealism. Liza Minnelli gives the performance of her career as sally and Joel Grey brings depth to the emcee who is mostly noted as a caricature in previous incarnations. His motives are the same - he commentates on events happening within the story - but here in this film he takes on eerie human qualities that set him apart from simply being the master of ceremonies. Still it is Michael York's often-overlooked performance as Cliff that is the glue of the story. He provides warmth and true humanity in a setting where there is so little of both. For my money this is the best version of cabaret as all of its song serve a direct purpose to the story and every plot point is distinct and fully developed. Cabaret has always been a strong story and it continually surprises people throughout the years because its relevance never dissipates - what happened could and probably will happen again. |

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 2007, R)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a masterpiece and one of the greatest film musicals ever made. Its greatest asset is Tim Burton's unwavering commitment in being faithful to the source material while at the same time making his own unique adaptation. No this is not the stage version and neither should it be. This is a film through and through and its likely to be one that you will never forget. But at the same time Stephen's Sondheim's score shines through piece and even though over an hour of his score has been cut or altered, the soul of the piece remains. To put it simply, you couldnt have asked for a better adaptation of Sondheim's greatest musical. Burton's direction guides along a very talented cast with Johnny Depp taking the reigns as the title character of the piece. Depp's Sweeney is quite different from any other thats ever been portrayed. The performance is more internal with bits of rage pouring out every so often. He is quiet and brooding, but Depp does a brilliant job of making us empathize with his character. At the end of the day its a heart-breaking performance. Helena Bonham Carter almost pulls the rug out from under Depp though. Her performance as the lovesick Mrs. Lovett is sickeningly funny and heartfelt. Her comedic timing is amazing, but what she brings to the table is a real grounded character that you cant help but feel sorry for. You want everything to end up OK for her in the end... though of course you know it wont. The supporting players are equally good. Alan Rickman is appropriately smarmy and snake-like with his Beadle adding extra gross out factor played to perfection by the great character actor - Timothy Spall. Who shows up and steals the show for his few five minutes or so is Sacha Baron Cohen as Pirelli, a rival barber. The laughs just keep coming whenever he is on the screen and he provides some much needed tension relief. And special mention should be given to newcomer Ed Sanders who brings warmth and compassion to the role of Tobias; his singing voice is also the best out of the whole lot. The production design is classic Burton as is the cinematography and costumes - but its all stunningly gorgeous and fits right in with the world of Sweeney Todd. It's also a damn bloody film, but not overly so. The blood is symbolic and serves as a metaphor for much of the film, but still not quite for the squeamish. And while the singing isnt the strongest aspect of the film, the music itself has never sounded better with a larger than life orchestra pounding out Sondheim's haunting score. But everyone does such wonders through the acting in their songs, that even those with the smallest voices seem large and pitch perfect. This is Burton's crowning achievement as a director and something he should be very proud of. Who knew that Stephen Sondheim and Tim Burton would be a match made in heaven? Certainly not me, but I am so happy with the outcome. This is by far the best film of the year. |
